Mark Mathabane is a former collegiate tennis player and South African author born in poverty under apartheid. His mother urged him to seek an education outside South Africa, which he did through a tennis scholarship. He graduated from Dowling College with a degree in economics in 1983. His autobiography Kaffir Boy, detailing his experience with apartheid, became a national best-seller. He was invited by Oprah Winfrey to appear on her show and later visited the White House after being invited by President Bill Clinton.
