On this episode, the guys speak with long time law enforcement professional, Chris Harvey of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, about his unique experiences as the former Elections Director of the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office. 

Chris explains the path he took to effectively serve in a position that put him in the middle the electoral process that helped to determine the winner of one of the most contentious presidential elections in our nation’s history. 

He also discusses how misinformation and falsehoods regarding the electoral process, often peddled by the candidates and their proxies, can undermine safe and fair elections for everyone that participates in one of the founding principles of a free and democratic society. 

Similar to many of the falsehoods and conspiracy theories that surround policing, the U.S. electoral process may also be receiving an unfair assessment by those that broker in division.

Recently, a 12-member jury delivered a verdict against officers of the Louisville (Kentucky) Metro Police Department's SWAT team. The lawsuit was filed by the officers in 2016 and sought millions of dollars of back pay for "on-call" time, dating back to 2002. The case garnered much attention in the police world based upon its potential impact to work-life balance, as well as the ability for officers to obtain additional compensation for special skills and assignments while in service to their communities.

To help listeners better understand the concept of police officer on-call pay, the guys discuss some of the common conditions that officers are paid to be “off duty” but still on “standby” for public safety emergencies.

They also provide some of their personal experiences, compensation expectations and further discuss some of the possible implications created by the jury’s decision.

Chris and Shaun discuss how the perpetual “culture of offense”  impacts the current state of our deeply divided society. 

Initially, they provide examples of how often innocuous events and words can be contaminated through the low-level triggers of offense that often distract us from the real issues. Later in the conversation, they cover how common it has become for the mere indication of “offense” allows for misinformation to grow and eventually destroy logical responses during any debate. Starting over as a cop can be challenging, but for many officers, it’s a great way to grow both professionally and personally. 

After retiring with over 20 years of law enforcement experience, Chris and Shaun discuss their decisions to relocate from the Chicago area and to continue their police careers in the southeastern United States.  

Chris details his second run at field training and how he now approaches the process as an accomplished “rookie.” 

As a recent police applicant, Shaun discusses the many current differences in the police officer recruiting and screening process versus those practiced in the late 90’s.
