On this week’s show, Chris and Shaun welcome back Retired Chief Tony Pustizzi (Episode 58):

https://www.buzzsprout.com/1342087/episodes/9698408

Chief Pustizzi discusses some of  the reported leadership issues associated with the tragic school shooting that occurred at the Robb Elementary School on May 24th, 2022 in Uvalde, Texas.

Chief Pustizzi’s shares his unique and unfortunate experiences in the realm of school shooter response to shed some better light on some of the crisis leadership that is now impacting modern policing.

Chief Tony Pustizzi (Ret.) began his career with the Coral Springs Police Department in 1988. Over his 30-year tenure, he supervised every unit within the agency with a strong emphasis on investigations, including homicide and special victims. Tony served on the SWAT team for 15 years where the last eight he was team commander. Tony rose through the ranks to ultimately become chief of police in 2012. He also served as the city’s interim city manager and retired in March 2018 as the chief of police/deputy city manager.

In January 2019, Tony came out of retirement to serve as the special counsel to the new sheriff of Broward County upon his appointment by the governor of the state of Florida.

During the school massacre on February 14, 2018, where a former student entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida and killed 17 innocent people and injured another 17 students, Chief Pustizzi, along with members of his agency, arrived at the school within minutes of being notified and was instrumental in organizing a complex law enforcement approach, including stopping and capturing the killer and extracting victims from within the school was initiated.

Tony now conducts trainings nationwide on school and workplace violence preparedness as he is a firm believer that seconds save lives and can attest that the Hero911 app for police would have alerted his officers minutes earlier, possibly saving lives during the incident he was directly involved in.

This week’s stranger-than-fiction-dispatch finds the boys from 3CT addressing a real-world call involving the unreasonable use of a particularly spicy condiment on a subject’s body part that should normally garner a significant  expectation of privacy.

The guys then discuss their favorite season- Riot season! The warmer summer weather often lends itself to more civil unrest, with a higher frequency of mass gatherings and the unhinged rhetoric that regularly accompanies modern political discontent. As of late, both the police and public seem conflicted when considering the appropriate response to this type of destructive and dangerous mob violence.

Resident subject matter expert, Sergeant Scott, covers some of the realities of dealing with violent civil unrest, as well as the current police responses to both lawful and unlawful mass gatherings.

After opening with another  “Stranger-Than-Fiction Dispatch,” the guys from 3CT offer their thoughts on the Uvalde (Texas) School Police Chief’s first public statements regarding the tragic school shooting that occurred at the Robb Elementary School on May 24th, 2022. They provide a line-level cop’s point of view regarding the Chief’s deflecting statements surrounding both his individual and agency’s actions during the incident.

They close with the confusing trend of risking public safety by excluding uniformed police officers from many Gay Pride Parades across the United States. Despite many of the event organizer’s heralded mantra of “acceptance and inclusion for all,” the police are often placed in the precarious position of attempting to provide community outreach, safety and security for events where organizers often publicly denounce the mere presence of the police.

On this episode, all of the boys get together and respond to a “stranger-than-fiction dispatch” to humorously illustrate the all-too-common calls that police officers regularly receive.

The conversation then transitions to the dangers of society’s selective indifference surrounding the regular murder of police officers and how that type of threat to a civil society likely won’t end there. They discuss how the unhealthy political divisions in America are undermining democracy as illustrated through the violent harassment of elected officials and planned violence against judges.

The boys close with how folks shouldn’t think that the current quality of life issues that may create a “red wave” in the U.S. mid-term congressional elections will provide any real solutions without the involvement of rational players. They stress the need  to stay informed, stay engaged and come together in helping to responsibly solve the problems that if left unresolved, could further undermine our Republic.

Renowned police trainer, Dave Smith, rejoins 3CT to provide some perspective on the officer involved shooting of Patrick Loyoya in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dave discusses the need to consider all of the circumstances  beyond the often inaccurate and harmful media narratives of  policing and race in America. Shaun provides us with some quick programming notes for the state of the podcast, recognizes our 911 Dispatchers and acknowledges the need to further discuss the officer involved shooting in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He also does a horrible impression of Marlon Brando as Colonel Kurtz from the film Apocalypse Now.
