  • 3' grezzi Ep. 487 Mattina autoreferenziale

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Perhaps you can also hear the noise of the dishwasher behind me, as well as the very unprotected sound of my voice today that sounds like I am inside a can and talking outside.

No, I am not inside a can. It is very early, I'm sitting at the kitchen table having breakfast.
It's early May, usually almost summer is starting in the part of the globe where I am. Instead, it is raining today. Through the window I can see a strip of road that has the typical connotation of a road when it rains on it, that is, nice and shiny.

Mazinga the cat, the big one, is on the table, behind the computer screen, has her back to me. I read somewhere that cats follow us around the house to see if they are ignoring us enough. And indeed a little bit this is the situation. I have her in front of me but she has her back to me, she didn't even turn around when she heard her name mentioned, Mazinga.

It's a bit of a day, in the sense that it seems almost a bit melancholy, almost. The noise in the background of the dishwasher, and this humming sounds almost like being aboard a train.
I did not turn on the light. I like to use natural light when I can, and it looks great even without the light on, without the neon, or whatever it is, flooding the room giving it an artificial look.

It's nice to enjoy these moments in the morning, when still everything has to wake up before 7 a.m., still everything is possible, and still you haven't wasted the morning doing things that you might as well have done without.

I am drinking a cup of coffee. It's been years now that I no longer drink lattes for breakfast in the morning, but I drink what I call American coffee, which is nothing but a very normal espresso served in a large cup to which I then add water until it reaches the rim of the cup and then I heat it up exactly 1 1/2 minutes in the microwave, so it gets hot and doesn't go cold right away because I like my coffee hot and I have time to sip as long as I'm doing my thing.

Mamma mia what a raw, self-referential 3 minutes today eh? Anyway, you'll excuse me.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 486 La sconferenza

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

The other day I peeped into a room where a conference was being held. I was looking for someone, opened the door, looked inside and saw what I expected: people on a stage chatting with each other and showing power points to the audience, the vast audience, some were following, some were snoozing, most of them were watching and their cell phones.

Now, when a person decides to go to a conference is potentially interested in the topic, otherwise there are so many other things they could be doing, first of all staying home. So if they already decide to leave home and physically go to the conference, they potentially have some interest.
But then where does this interest end up, why do people get distracted? In my opinion, it's not so much the speakers' fault, although there are people who really would put anyone to sleep, however, it's the format of the conference that induces this kind of falling asleep in the audience, because so few people on stage, so many people who have to passively follow along.

And so I was reminded of a model of conferencing that I hadn't thought about for a long time and yet has existed for decades now, and that is the unconference. I don't know if it's widespread here in Italy, I haven't even looked it up on the internet so I'll translate it for you so on the fly it's the 'sconferenza' and what is so special about it? That there is no division between audience and presenters, so there is not even a pre-selection of topics and you do everything together, it's let's say a big group work in an open space where the only thing you need to know is where you want to get to or what are the things you want to bring home in terms of content.

And then everything is decided together. Open spaces are preferred, group sessions are preferred. There are entire, there is a case system, different names: fishbowl, one person surrounded by others, open bars etc. in short there is a whole terminology to help organize these conferences.
The key thing is that they are informal meetings, where there is not one person in the pulpit preaching and others passively listening but where you all contribute together. Of course underlying this is the fact that you have to have the courage to relinquish power and then you have to trust your community of reference and really believe that you can get to do something together because in the unconference, it is not so much the end point, the destination that is important, but rather the path you take together.

And of course not all topics lend themselves to this kind of approach. However, why not try sometimes to give lectures, but not boring ones?

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 485 A letto? Mai!

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

found that something I do, unfortunately often, is not just a quirk of mine but is a serious thing that is studied in universities and there are people who even write articles about it.

I'm talking about that thing that at night, instead of going to bed at one o'clock at two o'clock when I'm supposed to go to sleep, makes me stay up and watch Netflix even though I know I'm hurting myself, but it's like I have lead tied to my feet and I can't get up, but by my own choice, by my own will, without having anything physical to prevent me from doing so.

This phenomenon is called 'revenge bedtime procrastination' which literally means procrastination of revenge, of rest, of going to bed, and it is exactly what I have described, when there is no one to force us to stay up, however we instead decide to do so and thus give up sleep.

Yes, these studies have tried to understand why people do this, and the reasons are apparently to try to regain a sense of freedom, a sense of being able to decide what you do with your life and you do it in the wrong way.

Apparently this study was inspired by the model, the Chinese 996 system, another thing I had never heard of, and that is the method of working that you work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for six days a week, help!, for a total of 72-hour work weeks.

What are the characteristics of this of this phenomenon? There must be three elements: one is that you delay the time to go to bed, two is there is no reason to delay going to bed, it is not that you have to do anything in particular, and then there is the awareness that you are doing so, it's is only when there are these three elements that we can talk of 'revenge bedtime procrastination'.
It is something that hurts, that you should not do, because it is not true that our body gets used to sleeping less hours, because our body makes us pay for it in other ways, so in the morning we are discontented, we have bad moods, we are not at the top of our form.

How can this be avoided? Oh well, besides getting up and turning off the television and going to sleep, yes, you have to try to find the right balance, give yourself a routine, avoid screens before going to bed, avoid that cup of coffee, that cup of coffee at a certain time and definitely don't drink coffee after dinner and then try to restore the balance, because sleep is crucial, it's the time when our body recharges and if we don't do that then oh well, we face the day drained.
Here, let's recharge, come on, let's try for real and let's go to sleep when we should.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Why does one decide to leave? Why do people decide to emigrate to another country? There is a lot of talk in recent times about the brain drain, and it has been talked about for many years. I don't know, I was definitely not a 'brain' when I decided to leave Sardinia and Italy. I had brains all right, however, I wasn't even a college graduate, in fact I was enrolled in the first few years of college, but I had an eagerness inside that made me madly want to leave.

Ever since I was a little girl, all the things that I would have liked to do, either I couldn't do them because I was in Cagliari, and Cagliari wouldn't allow me because there were no facilities, or I was told no, you can't do these things because you are a girl.

It was the 1980s, and I hope things have changed now. But I have these flashes of memory, though, I remember when they used to do the Sunday TV program 'Domenica In', I was a little girl, I used to watch and listen, I used to watch with a great nostalgia and with a great envy the playbill of the theater shows, where on national TV they would talk about the shows in Rome, Turin, Milan, Bologna, Naples and there was never Cagliari. And I longed, I used to say, oh my, if there was something here in Cagliari too! Just I had crazy envy, also when I listened to the road and traffic on the radio, on national radio, they always talked about highway here and highway there and they were always places with exotic names.

And of course there was never Sardinia. Why? Not because there were no traffic jams and no traffic problems, just that there are no toll highways in Sardinia, and evidently back then in the 1980s they only talked about toll highways.

Why do people go away? Why did I leave? Definitely not because of lack of work, because actually, when I graduated from highschool, they offered me a job immediately afterwards, imagine, in a bank! I think it was called, I don't remember 'Credito Italiano', I remember, anyway they offered me the position in the bank which I refused.

So no, it's not for lack of work that, at least as far as I am concerned, left, it's really to get away from the closed mindset and the lack of facilities to do what I liked and the things I liked to do.
And, paradoxically, it was easier for me to leave Italy than to leave Sardinia, also because I doubt I would have had the money to support myself in Rome, in Milan, in Turin, however going abroad was much easier for me, it was much easier to find a job and then to be able to support myself. Yes, that's why I left.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

In a movie I saw as a child, an important politician was the subject of an assassination attempt in a restaurant, and when they started shooting he boom! throws himself under the table and the bodyguard intervenes and saves him.

Many, many decades later, 30 years, 40 years, anyway a very long time, this foreign power, I don't remember now whether they were Russians, Americans, Chinese I don't know, anyway they had to ascertain whether this important politician was actually him or whether he had been replaced, and so they decide to have him meet with this bodyguard of his to see if 30 years later, 40 years later, if the bodyguard recognised him .

What do they do? They put them back in exactly the same situation as the assassination attempt, and then actually one comes in and starts shooting, and the politician instead of hiding under the table, as he had done 40 years before, he pulls out his gun and returns fire, and at that point the foreign power realises, lo and behold, he is not actually the politician of 40 years before, he has changed but not because he has changed in character, they have really replaced him.

So this is kind of the plot of the film. Whyam I telling you? Because it started from the assumption that our true essence, what we are inside, does not change: after a long time it remains the same. And this came to my mind why? Because I was thinking about the small gestures that characterise who we are.

I've been thinking about my small gestures, I hope I'm never faced with the situation of the attack, however, there are the small gestures that characterise me and I was reflecting on them this morning. For example: at night I watch TV and I usually have my home shoes on, when I go to bed, always, without noticing it at the moment, I leave my shoes there in front of the TV and go to the bathroom and then to bed barefoot. And so every morning I wake up, I get up and the first thing I do is I go to the TV to retrieve my shoes, my slippers.

I don't know why this happens. I don't know why at night it just doesn't occur to me at all to take my shoes with me, even if it's winter, even if the floor is cold, even if I don't have socks on. I don't notice, consciously, at night that I'm walking barefoot and going to the bathroom and then going to bed, and every morning instead I know, ah, the shoes, they're not there, phew! cold floor, I'm going to retrieve my shoes.

Yes, there are many of these gestures that I do, more or less unconsciously, that characterise me. So in my opinion, if you ever decide that I might have been switched with someone else, if you want to know if it's really me, put me in this situation: if I leave my shoes on and go barefoot to the bathroom and then to bed, you know 100 percent that it's actually me.

    TRANSLATION

Good news for the deaf community. If you have ever listened to any of my 3-raw-minute podcast, you will know that you shouldn't say 'unable to listen' just as you shouldn't say 'unable to see' as they are people in the positive who should not be defined using the negative.

So, as I was saying, very good news for the deaf community because it seems that the representation of the deaf, at least in Hollywood movies, is improving. It has been since Children of a Lesser God, a 1986 film, that we have not seen the portrayal of the deaf in such a positive way. And I'm referring to the movie that won three Oscars, the original title was CODA which means 'Child of Deaf Adult,' by the way it's a movie that the Americans copied from a very entertaining French movie, The Bélier Family from 2014 that had exactly the same plot.

Yes, a survey was conducted, this too among the deaf community in the United States, and they said that they actually feel more represented and not always in a negative way.

Let's say we are far from the time when people with a disability will be included naturally, without needing them to be there to talk about their disability. Already you see it a few times in TV series, always U.S., I can't remember which series, but there is an analyst working on computers, or in the laboratory, you know, the shows where people are murdered and they find out the murderer, and in one of these series I noticed with pleasure that the person in charge of doing the analysis is in a wheelchair, and never during the movie, the TV show was there any mention of the fact that she is in a wheelchair, just as usually there is no mention that a person has red hair or uses pointy shoes.

On the other hand, as far as Italian movies and TV series are concerned, which I confess I see very, very seldom, anyway, here in Italy I still notice a certain reticence, first of all to use positive language, and everyone keeps saying 'unable to see' because they are ashamed to say 'blind' and then to allow people to act in all their varieties, just as in all possible and imaginable varieties of people exist in the real world. You'll see, slowly slowly we will get there too, we are just about 15 years late, but we'll get there eventually.

    TRADUZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I have already told you several times about bodily functions in the course of my 3-raw minute podcast. A few days ago I also talked about going to the movies and how popcorn has become the food of choice when going to the movies. Today I'm staying on the topic of bodily functions and movies because I discovered a site entirely devoted to recommending to people who go to the movies when is the best time to go pee during a movie.
There are no spoilers, so it doesn't tell important plot passages, it doesn't reveal anything much, however, it does point out movie goers, here, if you go to see this movie you can go pee at this moment and at this other moment, because very little happens.
It often happens, especially when going to the movies with children, that children want to pee, and it also happens that with a movie that lasts 2.5 or 3 hours, even adults, despite having gone to the toilet before leaving to go to the movies, have the need to go to the toilet during the movie as well.
But it is always an awkward moment, because, especially if the movie is engaging, you don't want to miss anything. However, when nature calls one must answer.
Out of curiosity, I went to check some of the movies mentioned where there are recommendations for times to go to the bathroom, and they are not just children's movies, quite the contrary. Intrigued, I went to see when you can go pee during the movie Bullet Train, which is a movie I've talked about, I've read about, I've also told you about the book, which is really funny, hilarious. A film more than 2 hours long.
I went to check it out because it's a fast paced movie, just like the book, a lot of things happen at all times. In fact, I wonder, how can you go pee during Bullet Train? Nomatter when you go, even if you go during the theme song, you'll miss something.
And in fact in the website they give two, three moments when you can go pee, however they warn several times, look, Bullet Train is an action packed movie, so no matter when you go, you are going to miss something.
And then I also like the fact that in the site they remind you, be sure to remember to wash your hands because it's not that because you do things in a hurry, because you have to go back to the room, then you don't wash your hands. For goodness sake, always wash your hands after you go to the toilet.
Well, it is an interesting site, I doubt I will use it. I like it, though. I was glad to find it, a curiosity. I will of course put you all the links both of my old 3 minutes where I talked about the various topics I mentioned and of course also the link to the site that will tell you when you can go pee quietly.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 480 Dr Drer CRC Posse

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

My mornings are usually organized like a Swiss watch. I always get up very early, and let's say that by nine o'clock in the morning I have already had my breakfast, I have read my emails, I have recorded the 3 raw minutes podcast, I have translated the 3 raw minutes, and I have also prepared the translation with the subtitles scrolling in English so that it is automatically posted at eleven o'clock on my YouTube channel.

So at this time usually, now that I'm recording it's 11:08, by this time I've done these things long ago, I'm getting into work, into the other activities that I have to do during the day.

But today I find myself recording so late, it's also holiday, it's April 25, so I have no work commitments, why? Because I got home quite late last night. After coming home quite late, I started reading a compelling book and stayed reading until 2:30 in the morning, so I woke up definitely late this morning.

Yesterday I unexpectedly went out after dinner, by the way alone, after my friend Manu texted me saying, I'm going to the Roxy Bar, are you coming? And I went, and there was dr.drer concert there, and I will put the link at the end of the page.

I do know his songs, yes, but not very well, he does a kind of raggamuffin, using the Sardinian language and talking about issues that are important to us living in Sardinia.

What surprised me was ... First of all, I got there and it was packed. Yesterday was a very warm evening, I won't say summer, because we are still in April, however, one could leisurely stay out drinking.

When I arrived at the Roxy Bar it was packed, so much so that I had to text my friend Manu, but where are you? Can't see you? And inside was dr.drer's concert and it was packed with young people who not only danced but also sang and knew all dr.drer's songs by heart. I also jumped into the fray because I like dancing very much.

Yes. And this morning I woke up humming dr.drer's songs, I will now go and buy some albums, also to support local artists who deserve it.

So yes, absolutely out of the ordinary day for me. I also had some phone appointments with a friend that I postponed because now as soon as I finish recording I'm going to edit everything, put it online and then go for a nice walk because it's great sunshine outside and I need to stretch my legs because I'm still a little bit all cracked up from the night. Anyway, long live April 25 and long live dr.drer.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I still remember the first time I encountered sweet popcorn. I had only ever seen popcorn in the salty version, when we made it at home in a pan, then my mom would put salt on it and we would eat it that way, salted. But then, coming out of Italy I encountered the sweet popcorn, with various sauces, also very good among others caramel, peanut butter, chocolate, vanilla and also different colors, because they also put dyes.

Due also to a video I saw on Ted Talk, I became curious about the origins of popcorn and how is it that it ended up inside movie theaters, how is it that inside movie theaters you eat popcorn and you don't eat e.g. chips, or rather, if you eat them however not in the quantities with which you eat popcorn,
So much so that popcorn has itself become a symbol of going to the movies, often the symbol of going to the movies is a bag of popcorn with red and white stripes, you have surely seen them too.

One interesting thing is that in the early days, movie theaters refused to sell popcorn, at least in the United States, because they imagined that cinema was a continuation of theater, so something for rich people, for important people, and popcorn instead was seen as a poor man's food, also complicit in the fact that at that time cinema was silent, so if you couldn't read you couldn't understand anything.
It had to wait until the crisis of '29, the Great Depression, which also coincided with the introduction of audio in cinema, of spoken cinema, so more people could go to the movies.

And then, you see, the owners of movie theaters in the United States realized that they could feed people popcorn, which until then had been sold only at country fairs, at the circus, and at these places that were definitely not on par with the theater, and so they began to sell popcorn.
The popcorn that to this day is sold in all cinemas, I don't think it is sold in theaters, however, it is sold in cinemas. And one amazing thing is that if cooking, making a popcorn portion costs a few cents, probably less than 1€, definitely less than 1€, when you go to buy popcorn they charge you six, seven 8€ a carton, so they make a crazy profit on it.

I have read that in cinemas, it is always the numbers that refer to the United States, 40 percent of the cinema's profit is made from the sale of popcorn, to which the price is increased by 1,000 percent. They make 1,000% revenue on popcorn. Talking about it made me want to eat popcorn.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 478 Un festival piccolissimo

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

There is something magical that happens when we take something that is usually done on a large scale and start doing it instead on a tiny, microscopic scale.

I play a lot with the size of the things I do, in fact I often do podcasts that are very short, 1 minute long, this same podcast you are listening to now is 3 minutes long and I even have it in its title.
It's nice when I run into someone else who makes the same point, but in other ways. And that's what happened when I stumbled upon the smallest festival in the world, I think. They are not called that, but that's what I call them. They call themselves tiny festival and the name is Micros. It is the brainchild of Rocco Rossitto, who conceived and created this multimedia, highly personal travelling festival that always manifests itself in different ways and not on a regular basis.

I just recently discovered it, so I was able to enter its second edition, which saw the distribution of a number of artistic works that come directly to your home. And yesterday I had the pleasure of finding in my mailbox this beautiful red envelope with my name written on it, in a font that looks like it was typed, and when I opened the envelope I found my very personal work of art: a postcard illustrated with a photograph of an artist that I, by the way, know: Martino Pietropoli.

It is an intimate and personal work, so only the people who receive this postcard can see the exhibition, are part of this exhibition. Image that was produced in limited numbers, my image is the tenth of 100, so only 100 images exist of this one, of this postcard and I am enjoying it at home looking at it.

It is a beautiful photograph, very, very striking, it looks like a painting, more than a photograph, and the concept of this festival is really outstanding, which is, you see, to get away from the big crowds and to bring everything to intimacy, to bring everything inside the house, inside the people, and everyone then interprets the exhibition as they want and you become an active part of this circuit.
And I also like the idea of connecting people together and having a direct, one-to-one relationship between artist, creator and user.

I like it very much and I am very, very, very happy that I was able to join this, this circuit. I will, of course, put all the links and all the descriptions in the program notes and invite you, too, to immerse yourself in the micro, or rather in the Micros.
