    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Lasciamo i morti in pace. Occupiamoci piuttosto dei vivi, eh? Che ne dite?

    TRANSLATION
I have this terrible doubt, namely that men and women scientists do not have enough time to devote to watching films at the cinema or at home. Because if that were the case, if any of these scientists had ever seen a catastrophic film in cinema or television they would know very well what happens when someone tries to bring an extinct animal back to life. If they'd seen even one of the many Jurassic Parks they'd know it's a formula bound to lead to horrific disasters.

Why am I talking about extinct animals? Because there's a group of scientists in Texas, the scientists at Colossal Biosciences who have made up their minds to bring back animals that are extinct. So some time ago they announced that they would be working on bringing the mammoth back to life, imagine the elephant, but full of hair and with tusks, then they talked about the Tasmanian tiger and now the latest news that all the magazines are talking about is that they also want to bring the dodo back to life again.

The dodo was a fairly large bird that existed in Mauritius and became extinct at the end of the seventeenth century, after the Europeans arrived on those islands and hunted it, they brought animals that hunted the dodo. The dodo, which was a peaceful bird that minded its own business, was not afraid of humans and therefore ended up a victim of the spit for roasting, then also of the other animals that killed it.

Here, these gentlemen in Texas have this idea that according to them we need to bring back to life the animals that human stupidity has made extinct. Some rightly say, but if this money they have raised - because these gentlemen have raised quite a lot of money has gone from (I read it somewhere) from 120 million now they have more than 200 million to devote to this project.

Here, if this money were used to keep alive the animal species that are still alive, but for a little while, because it is known, the destruction of the animal habitat is the main cause of the extinction of the same animals, here, if they used that money and their know-how, their intelligence, their foresight, their science to keep alive the animals that already exist, it would be much better for everyone, because, you know, it can only go wrong when they try to bring back animals that have died. Let's leave the dead alone. Let's deal with the living instead, huh? What do you think?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
The eyes are the windows to the soul, and what are the windows? Windows are places to spy on other people's lives and I found a site that allows me to spy on other people's lives from anywhere in the world. It's a site called WindowSwap. It works very simply and very effectively, as are all simple things. Anyone can upload an image, a small video taken from their own window, upload it to this site, and then people who access the site find themselves in front of a screen with a button, every time they press the button the window that appears changes, and it's a window that can be from anywhere in the world.

I spent some time on this site this morning before turning on the mic to refresh my eyes a bit and you end up, you get, you literally crash into someone else's house, because it's little videos that don't last long and people, they also record sound, many of these have sound, so often when you enter these screens, you also hear the background noises of people walking, footsteps, kitchen noises. There was a window with a panorama of Istanbul where voices could be heard a bit far away, maybe someone who wasn't warned that they were recording the video to upload it to the platform, or maybe they did it on purpose to be heard.

I then ended up in Yorkshire, in the UK, where there was a window that looked out onto a garden, a somewhat abandoned garden, it wasn't well kept, but there was a branch and from this branch an animal hung upside down by its tail, from the size and position I think it was a possum, and it was super cute, took me a while to figure out what it was, thought it was a cat at first, but I'm not aware of cats hanging by their tails.

Then I saw a beautiful parrot in an Indian city, it was resting not on the windowsill but very close to the windowsill. Sometimes you even see people's fingers, fingertips, you know when you have to set up the camera - I guess everyone uses a cell phone - somewhere, you start it, the recording is already going and you're setting it up and you see the fingertips. Yes, I haven't seen how video upload works yet, so I don't know if you can do some editing, I guess not, but I guess you click go bump, take and take the 1 minute take whatever it is, and then it climbs into the system.

Oh yes, you got it right, of course now what I do, after recording my 3 raw minutes I'm going to set up my camera and I'm going to record my window.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Today I want to tell you about a book, a tiny book of a few pages called Non-Things and it is by a Korean writer called Byung-Chul Han. It is a little book that can be read very, very quickly, precisely because it is written with large font and has few pages, but it really left a profound impression on me, because in very simple language it speaks of things I had not thought of and which are very interesting.

The book begins by briefly recounting the plot of a Japanese novel, where there is this island and the inhabitants who lose their memories, lose their memories because there is a secret police that prevents them from remembering, so they hide their memories, but the police arrive and take them away. They even come to forget the memories of the parts of the body. It's a little sad and a little anti-utopian, because then the writer draws parallels between this Japanese novel and the present that we are living.

The present where we no longer remember things but we are losing objects, we are losing concrete things and we are replacing everything with the digital. We no longer try to remember things, we put them away digitally so we don't have to remember them. It is a reflection, let's say that from a certain point of view is trivial because we keep repeating it to ourselves, we live in the age of information and information is the most important thing.

But this analysis is very small, very concrete, too. It really made me think about the fact that I only remember one phone number by heart, it's the one of the house where my mom lives, which hasn't changed since I was a child in primary school, but I barely remember my own phone number, if it passes a while since I repeat it and someone asks me, I have to stop for a moment, otherwise I really don't know it by heart anymore, because I rely on the fact that I no longer even have an address book, all my telephone numbers are collected - don't we all? - within my mobile.

Another example is the fact that the real heaven and earth no longer exist but talk about the cloud, we talk about Google. And another thing that made me think about this book is the fact that our generation is a generation without hands because we no longer grasp objects, ours is a generation with the finger to click, to point, with the finger we click, we choose. So we no longer spend time reflecting on objects while holding them, we make choices. And yes, it's a bit creepy.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 395 Aeroporti

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
All my life I was the one that others accompanied to the airport and therefore for me the airport meant leaving, always leaving someone crying behind me, crying on the plane, being sad, because when you take a plane you always leave someone behind. For some time now, since I settled in Cagliari, my city of flamingos, I've been leaving less or in any case I'm leaving on vacation to return, not to move elsewhere.

It's been happening to me for a few months now, since my son moved to study in another city, let's say the most distant city possible, in the other part of the country where we live, and so it's me who accompanies him to the airport, and therefore I experience airports from another point of view.

A very nice thing is to see the arrivals, to see how others behave. There's always a couple of young people who meet again and I know exactly how it is, what it feels like to see again the person you love, someone who maybe lives somewhere else and therefore you stayed apart for a long time. And there are these wonderful hugs, these long kisses oblivious to everyone around.

Then there are always kids who come home to visit their families, a bit like my son, who may have spent some time away, the first time they stay away and there are all the relatives who go to pick them up and then the comments ah, but how you've grown, how you've grown!

Then there are the kids who go to visit relatives who live in this city, and therefore people who don't know each other very well, arrive with suitcases, are greeted by uncles, sometimes there are still those who make welcome signs. I too have had welcome signs waiting for me and it is an incredible feeling, because for those who arrive, when you walk through the airport door, you have the travel hours behind them, even if it is a short trip or, as was in my case, if it's a very long journey, you arrive exhausted, you don't want to do anything but toss your bags into the back of the car that has come to pick you up and, nothing and sit in the seat of the car and let us take you home wherever it is home.

Nice, it's an interesting experience for me to be on the other side of the camera, after having been an actor for so many years, now finding myself as a director, having to organize schedules, do the calculations to see what time to be there. Then I always check the app that shows arrivals in real time with the map of the sky, with all the planes that cross, I always get an incredible fear, how do these planes not crash into each other? There are so many in heaven. Anyway, I'm experiencing the airport, this non-place from a different point of view.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION
At a certain point, soap operas appeared in Italy. You recognized them right away because we were used to a kind of television that was done properly, with the lights put in the right place, a television that wanted to educate its listeners, its viewers, and then suddenly these horrible, unwatchable things appeared on tv, with crazy lighting, cloying acting, so much so that I remember, I used to make fun of my mom who watched them and I said, well, don't you realize that it's all one thing, a badly produced, badly acted mess? But anyway, soap operas had that crazy attraction power and so people started watching them. And at one point I started watching too. Because? What happened? Sonia Braga, the queen of Dancing Days, arrived in the soap operas.

Dancing Days was a soap opera like no other. It was scheduled after lunch and I remember when I had the morning shift at school - I finished, I don't remember at twenty past one - I used to make a mad dash to get home because Dancing Days was starting I wanted to see it.

It was different, and the driving force behind the Dancing Days story was Sonia Braga. An actor whose name I quickly learned, waiting for the final credits and reading them, there was no internet at the time, so I had no idea who she was, but she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. And the character played was this independent woman who got angry, did things, and then she was beautiful, she had this crazy sensuality, this very long black hair that I, as a person born with natural curls, envied so much. The events took place in this Brazil which for me was a wonderful place. Maybe one of the reasons why Dancing Days and Sonia Braga had such a strong effect on me, is also because Sonia Braga is a fantastic actor, I'm just saying if you've never seen it, watch Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is an amazing movie.

Why am I telling you about Sonia Braga? Because last night I watched one of those films to pass the night without thinking, with Jennifer Lopez, go figure, because I read some good reviews. It was no big deal, of course. Looking at the end credits there was a ballet I read the names of the actors, and Sonia Braga was there! She played Jennifer Lopez's mother, she was a lady with white hair and I didn't recognize her. I had a heart attack. Sure, I know people get older, but to see her so suddenly, oh my, she's still beautiful, always wonderful. And I continue to adore her, Sonia Braga.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 393 Generazione sottotitoli

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Insomma, i sottotitoli servono a tutti.

    TRANSLATION
If you have a young person, a boy or a girl close at hand, a son or a daughter, or if you observe someone young around you, someone who is looking at the cell phone screen following a video, you probably realize that this person is watching the video with subtitles, even if the video is in the spoken language, so a video in Italian watched with subtitles.

Yes, because what we have around us is the subtitle generation and I must confess that I too almost always watch things with subtitles. Always when the video is available in the original language, which I prefer to watch in the original language, but also when I watch something in a language I know, in English, in Italian I watch with subtitles. Why?

There are precise reasons, technical reasons that have to do with the way videos were made in the past, before there were mini microphones with which actors were miked. The scenes usually used a boom mic, that is a long arm hanging out of the scene and that towered above the actors and that had to pick up everyone's voices. That's why in the films of the 50s and 60s the actors speak in this somewhat particular way, they declaim, because everything the actors said had to be captured by this mic that was above them.

Now, let's say that in the last few decades microphone technology has made great strides, now there are microphones that collect the signal in a digital, wireless way, so you can put, you can hide miniature, mini microphones inside the clothing of the actors, who can therefore, these microphones can capture the voice even better than they can be hear by the co-actors who are in the same scene.

So these tiny microphones allow the actors to whisper. What happens then? Well, if you pay attention, often when we watch TV series, we don't understand what they are saying because they are whispering so convincingly that the words cannot be understood, even if you speak the language, you do not understand what is said and you have to go back and you have to listen again.

On the other hand, with subtitles you can, first of all, especially when you watch TV at night, you can keep the volume of the TV low and you can easily follow what is being said, with just the occasional glance, if you don't understand. In short, subtitles are for everyone.

    TRANSLATION
I have an English friend who has recently moved, before she lived in a farmhouse in Umbria and now she has moved to Palermo, and she works for an NGO in the Netherlands. Every now and then she goes to Holland foe a meeting, but basically she lives in Palermo, where she feels good because the climate is excellent, the city is wonderful, I haven't been able to visit her yet, but I will come to see you soon.

Why am I talking about my English friend? Because she is a digital nomad. Digital nomads are people who are lucky enough to have a job they can do remotely, and who can therefore work for a company, a company that pays well, in a country where the cost of living is very high, and yet they do this job living in a country where the cost of living is much lower, here is precisely the relationship between Holland and Italy.

Let's say after the Covip, after the lock down, Italy is facing the concept of work done remotely from afar. They call it differently, even if there is a lot of confusion, for example the difference between smart working, which is a job done in a smart way, and work done from home: not all the work done from home is smart, on the contrary, is often a very stupid job, done badly, organized even worse.

But today I wanted to talk briefly about digital nomadism because it is increasingly becoming a secret dream of many to be able to do a job from a beach in Sardinia while earning very heavy and very profitable American dollars. The most important thing to becoming a digital nomad is knowing a trade that lends itself to digital nomadism. Of course, if I'm a Zara salesperson, I have to go to the Zara store every morning because I certainly can't do it remotely.

So if there are people listening who want to become digital nomads, I strongly recommend learning a trade that can be done remotely. And then another fundamental element to being a digital nomad is living in a place where there is an excellent internet connection. And here oh well, I would certainly invite you to think about Sardinia as the site of your digital nomadism, because the climate is fantastic, the food is delicious, the people are super nice, but alas Sardinia is still not very well equipped in terms of internet network coverage, in fact there are areas that are real black holes where you can't even use your cell phone.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng trandlation below]
Avete presente quando Diabolik vuole scappare all'ispettore Ginko? Cosa fa?

    TRANSLATION
You know when Diabolik wants to escape Inspector Ginko? What does he do? He's driving his nice black Jaguar, he drives into a tunnel and when he comes out on the other side of the tunnel he's driving a white Jaguar. Naturally that simpleton Ginko doesn't notice that it's the same person driving a car of a different color. Well, move on Diabolik, because now there is a car that changes color.

Yes, the BMW Dee, the latest super modern car presented at the 2023 Computer Electronics Show a few weeks ago, and the fact that this car can change color, but in real time, within a few seconds, is not even the most exceptional, because this car has far more exceptional things.

So: you can change the color, there's some kind of remote controls and you say, I don't want it white, I want it yellow, I want it yellow with a stripe in the middle, etcetera. And this oh well, I told you, it's not even the most exceptional thing. Then there are projectors inside that project images outwards, so when a person passes in front of the car they see your image, you know, you, your avatar driving or doing other things, if the person walks around the car, the avatar follows them with the eyes. So also to warn anyone who wants to steal the car, which is super secure anyway, opens with a fingerprint.

But then there are other incredible things inside. First of all, the interior compartment is practically empty, there's nothing, there's just a steering wheel. But all the glass in front lights up and there are, there is a setting that allows the driver to drive on the real road with all the warning systems - attention, cyclists, etc. - but instead of seeing the actual road the car is traveling on, you see a virtual reality scene.

So, the car makes up these virtual reality scenes that are superimposed on the road you are travelling, so if you are tired of taking the usual route, the 131 Road [a boring Sardinian road], if you have to travel every day to go to work, you buy this BMW and you see, IDK, a scene from Lord of the Rings instead, but always respecting the speed limits and without hitting anyone.

In short, it's an incredible thing, it seems to be... when I saw it I saw the video, I thought I was watching Pixar, you know the Pixar film Cars where there were toy cars that speak, also because another of the characteristics of this car is that you can give it eyes: angry, happy - the front fender can be set to let other drivers know I'm cheerful, I'm aggressive, it even winks.

In short, this car will be available starting from 2025, so hold on a little longer with your little Panda car and in 2025 buy yourself a BMW.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 390 Cadaveri e pupe

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
The good old magazines of the past no longer exist. I remember when I was a child, my mother used to buy magazines, she also bought photo stories, but then at some point she started buying Duepiù, which was a magazine that was dedicated to couple education, so it was something very adult, and in fact there were articles that spoke in general, etc. but inside there was always a closed insert that we children were not allowed to read. So, I remember Duepiù every month in the newsstand. There are no longer newspapers of the past, I think that Duepiù is no longer published, let's say that publication of all magazines, both monthly and weekly and daily, has a bit declined.

However, there remains a nice market for magazines that maybe, even if they were not available, it would be the same, because they are addressed to a public so incredibly niche, so incredibly specific that I do not know how many readers they have around the world. In this category definitely belongs the magazine that is entirely dedicated to miniature donkeys. Yes, it is a magazine that talks about donkeys, but not the normal size, traditional ones, miniature donkeys: in each issue there are photos, advice on how to raise them, how to clean them, how to keep them happy, how to interact etc.

Another one that I found interesting - also very sectoral - is the one dedicated to breeding emus, also there a lot of interesting news for those who want to start this career. Well those sectoral ones are many: on cranes, everything on cranes, everything on elevators, everything on fences: there is a magazine entirely dedicated to fences, the colors, the designs, the modes, etc.

But I found one in particular, that I do not know who it is addressed to, it is called Girls and Korpses, practically corpses and girls. This magazine talks exactly what the name of the magazine says, because I saw a couple of covers online and they have photos of these girls more or less undressed with bikinis - sometimes also with weapons - and then there is the image of a corpse. I do not actually know if it is a real corpse or a puppet, however it seems that it is a magazine that goes well, you can also order, it it costs quite a bit, meaning it costs, well, $30, $40 plus shipping etc.

Well, evidently there is an audience that needs corpses and girls.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Ouch!

    TRANSLATION
Ouch! You know when you get a papercut in your fingertip or in the crease between the fingertips? It hurts unspeakably, especially if you consider the fact that the cut is really tiny.

If you think about it, there's no other part of the body where you can make such a minimal cut, so almost invisible, but it gives such a sense of pain that it doesn't even go away right away. Often when we get a cut, a scratch, it hurts a bit but then, after an hour we've already forgotten we have it. Instead, papercuts take a long time.

In this regard, I remember ta movie I saw as a child, a film set during the Second World War, where the Germans had the idea of kidnapping a boh, an English officer or maybe he was American, in any case one of the allies, put him in a room and make him believe that the war was over, that the Germans had won and that they just wanted to be told - tens of years after the end of the war - how the facts had gone. But actually the war was still going on, it had only been a few days, perhaps a few hours since they had captured him, put him to sleep, etcetera.

Anyway, they put on a real pantomime, they make him believe that the war is over, it's all been a long time and he's a bit shocked, he doesn't believe it at first and at the end he starts to believe it because there are so many actors performing. But what saves him? What saves him is that while he takes a pinch of salt at the table, ouch! he pinches his finger and remembers, he realizes that it is that paper cut he had made - he remembered having made a few hours before - it was still there so it was impossible that decades had passed and therefore the allies win as they always do (which I don't completely understand - why were the Germans the allies of the Italians but in the movies they are always bad).

Anyway oh well, so why am I telling you about papercuts? Because I discovered why they hurt so much. They hurt so much because the fingers, the fingertips, are our most sensitive part of the body, so they are full of nerve endings and when we make a papercut, the cut damages the nerve endings, but not enough so that we don't feel the pain. So we still have enough sensitivity to feel the pain - and we feel it all, all, all - and then there are a lot of these terminations, so it takes a lot of time to repair itself, because the cut is not deep enough and we feel it all. So next time you nick yourself with a piece of paper, think about all these things I've been telling you about.

Oh well, it won't make you feel better, but at least it will divert your attention a bit, right?
