  • 3' grezzi Ep. 408 Correggiamo internet!

    LINK Correct The Internet

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Let's take a quiz, tell me who has scored the most goals in international soccer competitions. I allow you to search on internet, indeed I invite you to use Google to find out who has scored the most goals in international football matches. You will see that Google tells you it was Cristiano Ronaldo with 118 goals. But this doesn't correspond to reality, because if you go and look deeper, you discover that there is someone who has scored 190 goals, and this someone is Christine Sinclair, a woman.

What happen? It happens that too often, let's say in the vast majority of cases, when looking for sports records, search engines are partial to the results obtained by male athletes, even if there are many cases in which female athletes have achieved best results. I'll give you another example: if I ask you who has won Wimbledon the most times, you'll tell me it's Roger Federer who has won it 8 times and you'll be wrong because Martina Navratilova won it 9 times. I'll give you another example of tennis, which is one of the few sports I follow, who has been number one in the world ranking of tennis players several times, for longer, for more weeks? Novak Djokovic was there 373 weeks, but that's not the right answer, because Steffi Graf was there 377 weeks.

Why is this happening? Because search engines work animated by algorithms created by human beings. And human beings in these positions are often male, and in any case the sport played by women is considered second-class compared to that played by men. Just think of the coverage of women's football compared to that of men's football.

But... Excellent news, there is someone who wants to correct this and it is an organization called Correct The Internet, it is a site (whose address I will put in the program notes), where there are a lot of records made by female athletes which however are ignored by search engines and the site gives us very few steps to follow, very simple to do, where you can copy and paste feedback to search engines, because each search engine has a little button at the end where it says 'feedback' and we can give the correct answer and say no, look at Google, you're wrong, it's not like that, there's this female athlete who is much better than the male athlete. Come on, let's do it!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 407 Mettere in ordine i mattoncini Lego
Perché mettere in ordine i mattoncini Lego dà così tanta soddisfazione? Me lo sto chiedendo da un po'.

    TRANSCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
If you've ever dipped your hands into a container full of Lego bricks, you know what I'm talking about when I say it feels great. And perhaps it is precisely this, the manipulation of the small Lego bricks that makes the activity of sorting Lego bricks so beautiful, which is always the attempt to sort them out because, especially when you have so many, and at home we have, I don't know, probably about ten kilos, something like that, we don't know where to put them anymore, and when we try to sort them out it's always an operation that effectively never ends.

I wonder how is it that sorting Lego bricks is such a great activityo, and if you've never done it, I'm not exaggerating, it's an operation that becomes zen at a certain point. You can really spend not hours but the days.

I also tried to look for scientific articles on the subject, but I could not find any. My research wasn't super thorough, but if there had been something relevant, I would certainly have come across it. I don't know, maybe it's the act of ordering and organizing that gives a sense of accomplishment, a sense of completeness. Or perhaps it is precisely the manipulation that is a beautiful sensory experience, not only to the touch but also to the sound.

There's even a Lego site, a channel, or rather, I think it was Lego's Spotify, where there are various tracks and there is white noise, that is background noise, and it is precisely the noise of the small bricks that are handled, and they make this noise that almost seems like the sound of the surf on the beach.

Sorting Legos takes a lot of concentration. First of all, a criterion must be established: sorting according to the color? Mixing all the pieces? Or sorting them according to size? Or perhaps, as I usually do, first by color, then within the color I divide the different bricks, the flat ones, from those a little higher, those of two, from those of three, and so on.

Let's say that perhaps one of the reasons why sorting Lego bricks gives a sense of well-being is because there is a feeling of putting order out of chaos, especially when perhaps there is chaos in private life, which is not my case, but maybe that's why I'm thinking, sorting Lego bricks you can pretend to be a great creator who has the power to bring order to the matter that surrounds him/her. I recommend you to give it a try if you can.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
In the past I have already told you about my general practitioner, my family doctor and my hairdressers. Today I want to tell you about my otolaryngologist, why do I want to tell you about her? Because when we usually use a service and things go wrong, then we immediately run home to complain about it on social media and call them every name under the sun. But when a service works well, especially when there is a good professional who not only does things well from a professional point of view, but also performs them with courtesy, we don't comment, we are happy about it, but then it ends there.

Instead I, I like to comment when things are done well, I also like to tell those directly involved. And this is what happened when I went to see my otolaryngologist to undergo this visit which, wait a bit, I'll tell you what it's called, fibrolaryngoscopy, which is a somewhat invasive visit: they have to insert a small tube with a camera into your nose to look closely at the vocal cords. And my otolaryngologist was very good at preparing me psychologically, so as to make the visit, if not pleasant, at least less unpleasant, and as we went along she told me what I could expect, so she said, look, it's going to be annoying, but no more than an anticovid test, if you ever had one done - and let's face it, who among us has never had? - and the level of annoyance was more or less the same, but even then during the procedure at a certain point I had to swallow with this little tube inside, and she told me now you have to swallow but don't be frightened, because it was actually a very strange feeling, and at the end of the visit I thanked her and complimented her because not only did she demonstrate great knowledge of the subject, of what she was doing, great confidence, great professionalism but above all she did it in a very kind way, very courteous with great respect towards me, towards the patient.

So I want to use today's 3 raw minutes podcast to invite you, the next time you come across a professional, a professional who not only knows how to do their job well because - this is the minimum, that is, at least what they have to be able to do, I take it as a given - but they do it with passion, they do it with respect, above all with courtesy. Eh, don't be afraid to point it out, comment on the courtesy of this person who was so courteous and you will see, you will feel better and it will certainly relieve some work stress for this person who has turned out to be so courteous. Long live courtesy!

    LINK:
Il suono originale / original sound
    Documentario
SPOILER non aprite prima di aver ascoltato tutto (don't open before listening to the end)

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Since I lost my voice about three weeks ago, it's no surprise that stories involving the voice have affected me the most, but this story would have affected me regardless, because it's one that was heard once, definitely, you don't forget it anymore.

I'm talking about the whale 52 Blu - 52 Hertz, a whale that was discovered in 1989, when an unknown sound was heard for the first time, a sound so unfamiliar that it was immediately registered in the register of mysterious sounds that are kept to monitor in case of weapons. But it wasn't a weapon. It was simply a whale, but it communicated at a much higher frequency than that used by other whales. The whale that comes closest to it, in terms of frequency, is the blue whale which communicates at a frequency ranging from 10 to 39 hertz. So, you understand that 52 hertz is way out of this range of sound.

Whales are incredibly social animals, which among other things use their voice, their song to transmit information from generation to generation, they are incredibly intelligent animals. So imagine the solitude of a whale that cannot communicate with its own kind. Whales are also very long-lived animals, they live for many years, so they also have a long life, lots of things to tell. In short, a very sad image of this whale that has no one, no one of its kind who can understand it.

And in fact this such a touching and sad story, in fact it is commonly known as the loneliest whale in the world, and also perhaps the saddest, has inspired a lot of films, documentaries, animations. There's even a KPop group that wrote a song called Whalien 52, a play on words between whale and alien, where they talk about the problems of adolescence.

I heard this story and it struck me a lot, but happy ending! Because in October 2022 a similar sound was heard, a short distance from one another, in two different places, so they probably found out that the blue whale 52 is not more alone, but there is someone else, and then the scientists have also ascertained that probably the other whales can hear it too, they can understand it, as if they heard someone speaking with a strange accent. So it is probably never been this lonely. But it's a good story that ends well. Long live communication.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I grew up Catholic. Although I am neither a believer nor a practitioner, just like all people who grew up Catholic, especially those of my generation, when parents really went to church every Sunday and had us go through baptismo, confirmation, communion and so on, I carry with me the great guilt of us Catholics.

That is, I feel guilty even when I shouldn't, even though I've struggled and worked a lot in my life, first of all to realize this unmotivated guilt, and then because not having guilt is one of the things I tell people to embrace, because it is also reflected in the way we live our days and above all in the way we live our creativity.

I'll explain why I'm talking about the sense of guilt, because yesterday I had one of the very rare days when I didn't work, and for me work is something that goes beyond the work I do for others, even when I'm home alone, even when I'm relaxing, I can't relax doing nothing, I always have to do something that has a certain type of utility for me.

Even when I go on holiday I choose my holidays not as a place to leave everyone and everything behind to do nothing, for me the idea of a nice holiday is a place where I can go and explore and make small projects for myself, and then maybe I don't do anything with them, but while I'm on site I've got something that occupies me.

My idea of relaxing at home is reading, reading a book that I can then, from which I can draw inspiration or in any case a book that I have wanted to read for a long time because it was recommended to me.

So it's very hard for me to be on the couch doing nothing, and yesterday I sort of did that. You can still hear it from my voice, I'm recovering from losing my voice, Thursday I have an appointment with the otolaryngologist who will tell me what's going on inside my throat, especially in my vocal cords.

It was one of those dark, drizzly days, I was alone at home because my son is studying at university on the mainland and my husband is away on a business trip, I am alone at home, and I absolutely didn't feel like doing anything, and I allowed myself one of those days that my Catholic education has always made me stigmatize and that I recovered tooth and nail and claimed my right to do absolutely nothing for a day.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

"No!

    TRANSLATION
Yes, I know, the month for weddings is May, so maybe I should have waited a few months to talk to you about this topic. But I didn't make it because it's too funny. I found an article that explains how to stop a wedding. You know that scene from the movie with Dustin Hoffman, The Graduate where she is getting married, he enters the church, takes her, they run away together etc. "No! You don't have to get married!" Here, this article gives some practical, real advice on what to do if you want to prevent two people from getting married, I found it incredibly funny.

So this article begins by saying consider well your reasons why you don't want the two to get married? Simply because you are jealous? Or are there real reasons? If there are real legal reasons, then he recommends contacting people who deal with legal things, I don't know, one of the two is already married, so bigamy is punished in almost all countries.

Then they advise, very wisely, to speak privately with the two who want to get married. However, if they still don't give up, then a lot [laughs] goes down hard because they say, follow the money, follow the cash, who is paying for the wedding? Probably their parents, go and convince the parents not to pay for the wedding. If then these two unfortunates still insist on wanting to get married, another suggestion is to suggest a fake marriage, therefore with the ceremony, but the person who marries them is not a person authorized to marry them, so everyone will believe that they have really married, instead it was all a set-up.

Then another suggestion is to involve other people, start talking to all their friends and get them to take your side. If this too, this approach doesn't work, another piece of advice, which isn't exactly about how to prevent the wedding, but they say wait for the two to get married and then ask for the marriage to be annulled, and another piece of advice still on this on this vein is to wait for the two to break up.

In short, there are a whole series of tips that I really recommend for anyone wishing to prevent a wedding to read because they make you laugh, also because they are then accompanied by various drawings of sad faces, angry faces and depressed faces of both the spouses and of those who want to prevent marriage.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I came across one of those papers that hang on the street, those little home-made posters that hang around when you lose a cat you lose a dog and you want to ask the neighborhood for help whoever has seen it call this phone number, then write the telephone number and cut out the lower part of the paper making small sheets that can be torn off.

Well, I came across this poster with this picture of a cat with a big angry face and I thought dunno, a lost cat, then I read the first line and it said "This is not a lost cat". Ah, I immediately thought, it will be one of those cats that goes around from house to house and gets food from everyone and then gets fat to death and the owners have put up this sign to warn, look, this is not a cat that got lost, but it's a cat that goes around for... anyway, I kept reading but no, none of that, the sign continued and said: this cat is a cat that has its own family, who loves it, we put its photo because it's so cute, because we wanted to get your attention, we want to invite you to make a nice gesture today towards someone who doesn't expect it. And then, in the part that people usually write down their phone numbers for whoever finds the cat to call, there were instead written advices, small gestures to brighten the day of some stranger.

And they were very simple things, things like holding the door open for someone who is coming in or out, or calling that person you've been thinking about for a while but that you always thinks you don't have time to call, or leaving a nice message on the windshield of a car - which I then imagine every time someone leaves me one, which is to say, it doesn't happen often, but it happened that someone left messages in the windshield, even advertisements perhaps, which, however, looked like handwritten messages, and I immediately thought of myself they touched the car, something happened, I parked the car wrong and I didn't notice it and they are sending me the curses. But oh well, this is also an idea, leave a message to someone idk, to brighten the day. Or there were things now I don't remember others, however they were all small gestures that cost nothing and that can actually change the day of someone who maybe is having a slightly sad or melancholy day and maybe a smile will escapes. I saw this sign and I think I will reproduce it and I think I will put the photo of my cat Mazinga to attract attention.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
There was a blackout yesterday. It was about six in the evening, late afternoon, early evening, it was already starting to get dark, indeed, it was already dark because there were several lights on in the house and at a certain point the screen of my computer, of the desktop, it's off and all the lights in the house have gone out and the alarm of the structure that the bricklayers use to renovate the building began to sound an insistent siren and the sound continued for quite a while until someone then, I don't know where, switched the alarm off.

Silence and total darkness in the house. I always intend to have torches, things to use in times of emergency, but of course I had one idk, who knows where is the torch that I put on my head when I go into the wardrobe to record, even that a bit I found it groping, but what I found, I knew very well where it was, was a container where I keep the candles. So I took the candles and lit them, I gathered them all on the table, then I went looking for a match or a gas lighter or something which of course I didn't find right away and I took these candles and put them on the table and they created some light and so we began to wait for the light to come back.

However, the light didn't come back on because there was a fault which we discovered by phoning the electricity manager, who would only fix the fault after 8.30pm. So a couple of hours of total darkness were waiting for us to spend rigorously without internet, because without electricity the modem doesn't work, the router doesn't work, without heating because, I don't quite understand why, because we don't have electric heating, we have gas heating, however when there is no electricity, the heating goes off so we were also in the cold, but we were getting ready to go out to visit friends, so we spent half an hour, 20 minutes in the dark, and I won't tell you what it means to get ready for going out in the dark with the phone light, which by the way wasn't even 100% charged, so I was quite aware of not having to waste it like this.

Nothing, you drop a glove and you can't find it, try tidying up your face and hair in the bathroom with a torch, and the problem is I turn the torch towards my face and I don't see what's there then in the mirror towards I don't see myself in the mirror. In short, problems from the first world that is once again catapulted into the period of darkness.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 400 Pionieri dell'informatica

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
It took my friend Severino to remind me that we were also pioneers of computer science. Severino, with whom I went to high school at the Pietro Martini Technical Institute in Cagliari, a technical institute that had a programming class that I enrolled in, not so much attracted by computer science, as there was still very little talk of computer science, but it was a class, a course of study that allowed us to learn English for all five years, I wanted to learn English, there was no language high school at the time I think, or anyway, I don't know why, I enrolled at Martini and started this programming course.

We had these big electronic computers that I seem to remember still worked with cards, we used them very little because, like the model bench, that is a fake bank where we were supposed to pretend to do all banking operations, it was never used as intended, and we were told that there were two programs we were supposed to learn: COBOL and Fortran. I speak in the conditional because at the time we had the great misfortune of having a teacher who knew nothing about computer science. In fact, for all three years of computer science we had a single booklet, I don't know, a green-covered booklet where we learned things by heart, but we really never did anything, so much so that at the high school graduation exam, since our course was a special one, programming course, computer science was a mandatory subject, and we prepared for it, but when the examiner from the external commission began to question us, he realized that even the best in the class, even those who got top marks in the Italian essay, knew absolutely nothing about computer science and were simply repeating things they had learned by heart, but from which they had absolutely no idea.

Anyway, yes, Severino, you're right, we were also pioneers of computer science. You were perfectly right in that beautiful message you sent me, in the voice message, because Severino is not in Cagliari now, he is in Dorset, and has a beautiful family and does a beautiful job, and we haven't seen each other for 40 years. Yes, you reminded me Severino that we were also pioneers and that our approach to computer science in unsuspected times didn't harm us at all. We remained beautiful curious and say that we did not come out too traumatized from that experience, we were able to make good use of it and then went our separate ways. Come on, we'll see each other soon.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 399 Copenhagen Cowboy

    TRASCRIZIONE [English translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Copenhagen Cowboys is a television series that I just finished watching and that left me with a lot of desire to see more. It's by the Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, which I'm certainly pronouncing very badly, in any case it doesn't matter, because for some time now he has been signing himself with the three initials NWR.

An interesting character, son of art because his father is a director and his mother is a photographer, when he was a child at the age of eight his parents moved to New York and then he returned to Denmark to attend university and at just 25, had made short films, one of which impressed an investor who offered him $32 million to turn the short into a feature film. And then from there the rest is history.

Copenhagen Cowboys is a crazy television series, it has hypnotizing photography, music that when is present, is incredibly beautiful and dark, lots of techno music, and when it's not there it's a hiss, or rather, it's a 'hummm' like a drone that accompanies the scenes. There are circular camera movements, the characters practically remain motionless and the camera makes a 360-degree turn, and in fact the characters often speak and aren't even framed. And then it's a triumph of blue and red. Very strong neon colors and everything in between, very purple.

Which is an interesting thing because by rummaging through the director's biographical notes, I discovered that he claims to be colorblind. Now, colorblind people fall into three categories: those who do not see the color green, those who do not see the color red and then those who do not recognize the range of colors that goes from blue to violet. I don't know which category the director belongs to. NWR, that's what she calls herself, declares he is colorblind, but all the scenes are characterized by very strong blues, very strong reds and very strong purples and the protagonist of Copenhagen Cowboys, I'm not spoilering anything, it's this girl who wears for practically all six episodes a blue tracksuit and reminds a bit of Kill Bill, remember the yellow tracksuit? But where Kill Bill was all action and movement, the protagonist of Copenhagen Cowboy is motionless and mesmerizing.
