  • 3' grezzi Ep. 388 Cosa mi guardo?
Ore sprecate inutilmente a passare da un canale all'altro, da una serie TV all'altra, per poi finire la serata senza essere riuscita a trovare niente di intressante. Un non-problema che mi innervosisce.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Let me start today by talking about what are called 'first world problems', that is, problems that do not exist. My problem is that in the evening I don't know what to watch on television, I'm not talking about generalist television, the one that ditched it, I'm talking about the many channels to which we subscribe. More or less we do subscriptions sometimes for months, sometimes for weeks, sometimes I just get a subscription because I want to see a particular series on television. However, despite the great variety, the great offer of channels at my disposal, I can never find anything to watch. I know that this is not just a problem for me, if we want to call it a problem, but that many people are in the same situation as me. After dinner TV, we watch Netflix, we watch Disney, we watch first and then, but there are very few interesting things to see. And I've almost always seen them before because I can't make up my mind, but I really don't know. In the evening I don't like seeing heavy things, I don't like seeing violent things in general. I eliminate a priori all the series that have to do with bad things done to children, because I can't even see those. Well, my ideal series to watch is something that lasts, say 25 to 40 minutes. May it be cheerful but not stupid, may it be something that also makes me think. Why between 20-40? Because if I like it I can watch more than one in a row. But it must also be something that stimulates me in some way that makes me see places I don't know. I really like series that are set in other countries last night they started watching one set in Saudi Arabia but no, in fact it was a film I gave up immediately because there was a wedding scene and all the men were there. On one side the women were not seen, they were all veiled. I really dumped her, I couldn't keep watching it. Yes, so I'm spending too much time sitting on the couch, unable to find anything to look at instead of picking up a good book, going to bed, and reading. Among other things, I'm also reading a very interesting book, I'll tell you about it in the next few days. Oh god, I hope I didn't overdo it with my voice, I feel like I'm slowly losing it. There are, say, fifteen seconds left at the end of the raw 3 minutes. Yes, yes, it's my fault. I should get a move on. Stop being the rabbit in the headlights blinded that doesn't move. Turn off this blessed television, send everyone to hell and read a good book or listen to a good podcast. And I recommend it to you too. All right?

    [TRASCRIZIONE - ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Here I am, I'm back! I still don't have my beautiful crystalline voice, but I think I can get through today's 3 minutes without having to resort to the artificial voice.

Today I want to tell you about something I discovered tonight. I couldn't sleep, I was listening to a podcast and I discovered something I didn't know at my ripe old age. Do you know when you realize that all your life you have believed something and that something is not true? It often happened to me when I was little, because my dad loved to tell stories and he was a great story teller, but sometimes he told me stories that I then, only after a long time, realized that they weren't true except within the our family.

I remember once, as a little girl who I don't know why, my father started telling this story about the pomegranate tree, which is a tree that you plant and then, after I don't know how long, a couple of years, you uproot it completely and plant it upside down. I was a little girl and I believed it, and I told it in class and everyone started laughing. Oh well, my dad used to do things like this, but he was a very funny person.

Yes, but the thing I discovered tonight listening to the podcast has absolutely nothing to do with my dad, it's just that made me think of him precisely because it's one of those things he could have told me, but is it really so?

Here, I discovered that Mount Everest is not called that because it is the easternmost peak in the world, but because it was called that by an English gentleman who was the first, as they say, official measurer of the crown - or something like that, in the 19th century in Nepal, Mr. George Everest and it's a very interesting story because this gentleman knew very well in the 19th century that that mountain already had a name, it had a name both in Nepali, I mean in Tibetan and in Chinese, and the name meant 'goddess of the world' which already gives us an idea here, they knew very well that it was a very high mountain. Not only that, but when I found out I thought "look at him [Mr Everest], this moron who goes there, does things like that" but no, poor him, he had nothing to do with it, he didn't want the mountain to be called by his name, he had never even been to the summit of Everest. But his successor, who was really a realist more realist than the king, this Indian expert measurer, insisted on giving the name of Everest to this mountain, and apparently, this Indian gentleman was even unaware of the existence of the name in the original language.

Oh well, but it must be recognized that Everest is a very evocative name and full of mystery. It wouldn't have worked if he had been called Smith.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 386 Rimpicciolazione

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Dear faithful listener that have been following me in the days of this acute laropharyngitis that has been taking away my voice for over a week! As you can hear, despite the out of breath and the long pauses, things are much better, but I still can't sustain 3 straight minutes of talking, if I don't want to ruin everything and start over, that's why even today I take advantage of this fantastic invention that it's the artificial voice to tell you about something that is close to my heart, indeed, that makes me angry. I'm talking about 'rimpicciolazione' and if you don't know what that is don't worry because I just made it up trying to translate the English word 'shrinkflation'. I'll explain in a moment what it is about: it's when you go to the supermarket to buy your favorite chocolate bar, you get home and nothing strange, same packaging, same box dimensions and you paid what you pay for it always. But when you open the package, you notice something strange: they have changed the way in which the squares of chocolate are formed, and the bar has a strange, different appearance, even if at first sight you cannot understand "different how". Then you remember that you still have a leftover from another bar of chocolate, you take it to compare and you realize that those wretched [dots dots - put the brand name here] scraped 10 grams off your bar, and that you are paying the same price for a tablet that weighs exactly 10 grams less. Here, I wanted to call this scam "shrinking" and it is a cheating marketing tactic - because the company doesn't even have the courage to say that it is increasing the price, instead it keeps the identical packaging but changes the size of the product. Pay attention to it the next time you go to the supermarket, so many do it: in chocolate, in bars of soap, in packs of dish soap. So today I end my 3 raw minutes with a real incitement to riot: first of all get used to recognizing the brands that do the 'shrinking' – they are often the ones that use gigantic cardboard packages to put a tiny product inside (and those they are brands that we should also avoid out of respect for the environment because nobody needs a box of biscuits individually packaged one by one and in turn packaged in groups of five, all inside a plastic-coated cardboard box, don't you agree? then once we have identified the bogus brands, let's boycott them and shame them on social media, which at least work for this, because it is our right as consumers to know how much you are charging me for the chocolate. informed purchase! And long live the artificial voice that allowed me to continue doing my three raw minutes!

TRASCRIZIONE & LINKS [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
Cortisone and antibiotics are having an effect, but you'll forgive me that today too I use the artificial voice because still, after 6 days, I wouldn't be able to speak for three minutes in a row. But how amazing that I was able to continue doing this podcast using an artificial voice, something like this would have been unthinkable just a few months ago.

Not at all unthinkable and entirely according to the script are the comments that I hear and read after the historic resignation of the premier of New Zealand, Jacinta Ardern, one of my favorite heroines, a woman who has never been afraid to speak her mind and who she has always proven to be consistent, one who practises what she preaches.

What happened? Has happened that for the first time in modern history a person who holds the highest office of state and enjoys the greatest respect both at home and abroad said that she wants to resign, not because involved in a scandal or because torpedoed by her party, but because - and I use her words - "she ran out of petrol", even a media outlet that I follow and respect like the BBC can't make it, and breaks the news with a headline that asks "Can women have it all?” - come on! You too BBC still with these sexist comments? How disappointing! [note: BBC has changed the title since.]

Yes, because what one apparently cannot understand is how a person at the peak of success can leave because she knows she cannot give that 200% of energy required instead by the position she holds. An act of awareness, humility and incredible political intelligence. Oh, imagine having more politicians like her!!

Before Jacinta Ardern, the world press had paid little attention to New Zealand, but it started talking about Jacinta Ardern even before she became premier aged 37 because, as I have already said, she never backed down in the face of sexist questions from the media – and she never gave a damn about criticisms: for having taken 6 weeks of maternity leave when her daughter was born, for taking her newborn daughter to an important international meeting, in short, they never missed an opportunity to criticize her.

So, here is the thing: the New Zealand premier has strung together one global success after another in all fields: in the fight against COVID, in the response to Islamophobic attacks (and in this regard, when the former president of the United States Donald Trump asked her what he could do to help New Zealand be safer against terrorism, she said: "be more loving to your neighbor") well, I was very angry at the BBC comment from which I expected better, but I'm having a blast hearing the comments from the Italian press.

That is, you know our political class, don't you? You do know the gerontocracy of sousages that has governed us for decades? So, long live New Zealand, which recognized the vote for women in 1893 while in Italy women have only been able to vote since 1945!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 384 Silenzio!

TRASCRIZIONE E LINK [ENG translation below]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Slowly my voice is coming back, even if it's still not enough to do an entire episode of the "raw 3 minutes", I still have to be silent for a bit. I will therefore have to use this artificial voice for a while longer, be patient!

These days have also been an interesting laboratory to see how different people react in front of me unable to speak. Well, one of the strangest reactions comes from those who become super-empathic and also begin to speak in gestures or in whispers, and my mother certainly falls into this category. With her these days we've had to replace voice calls with skype connections, and oh well I can't talk, but she too often gets caught up in super-empathy and whispers or speaks with gestures. And I laugh.

At home I've been going around for days with the iPad that I use as a slate, and even though everyone at home loves me and is worried about me, I see them secretly rolling their eyes every time they feel the touch of the shoulder and I come up from behind with my slate with requests and curiosities and with all the phrases that I would normally say to have, smalltalk that the slate makes much more complicated.

And then there are the situations in which I don't have the slate with me and then my little family competes to misunderstand what I try to explain with gestures, they do it on purpose because they enjoy seeing me mime things that cannot be described by gestures.

But there are also embarrassing moments where not being able to talk puts me in difficulty, such as when I pass neighbors on the stairs and greet them with a smile and a silent nod, or such as when someone makes a courtesy gesture and holds a door for me to let me in, or when I pay at the supermarket, all situations in which my interlocutor does not always look me in the face and therefore cannot see that I am smiling and thanking with my eyes or mimicking "thank you" without speaking, and I feel very rude.

But I have to overcome the desire to want to talk because I know that every time I speak I'm slowing down my recovery, and that if I make an exception for someone then I end up doing it for everybody and I'm left without a voice for another week.

But I console myself, first of all because, doing a little research, I found articles that explain that being silent is good for your health: well, I found that it lowers blood pressure, helps concentration, helps against insomnia and makes even lower cortisol levels, which is the stress hormone.

Another nice thing that came out is that a lot of friends have sent me advice and wishes for a speedy recovery, and many have pointed out to me that program that allows you to generate sentences using the voices of famous people, and even there I have some fun.

TRASCRIZIONE E LINK [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
For gyms, January is the month with the highest number of new enrollments, because the number one 'resolution' at the beginning of the year is to lose weight - even if people often say they want to get fit.

Because there is a taboo against fat which is considered a sick mode of the body, because those who are fat cannot control their eating. So let's begin to see how the famous table of body mass index was born, the method used to create labels ranging from underweight to terribly obese.

The table was invented a couple of centuries ago by a statistician who measured the weight and height of soldiers from the French and Scottish armies, therefore males from Western Europe in the 1800s.

Now, you understand well that I have a different weight/height ratio from that of a 19th century French army soldier. You also understand that males and females have a different distribution of fat, in fact we float in the pool differently, because the fat in my female body is distributed according to motherhood. And this is just one of the differences between me and the French soldier. Do we want to talk about the different nutrition?

Yet medicine uses the body mass index to decide who is fat, and once you have the "fat" label, everyone feels compelled to tell you what to do to lose weight, because, you know, if only the fat people with a little willpower could easily lose weight. Right?

No, wrong: those who think so ignore that we have the power to decide on our physical appearance only in part, because igenetic factors play a decisive role, so we really can't help it. Others factors are added to the genetic ones, equally foreign to our will, such as the social status and level of education of our parents, or the country where we were born, even the neighborhood that determines the access we have to good food at an acceptable price, all things extraneous to our willpower but crucial in deciding our body mass.

This is why a lot of people who would like to lose weight fail despite all their efforts: because there are a lot of factors beyond their control that work against them.

So here's the good resolution: stop using the word 'fat' as a code word that means "people who can't control themselves in eating" and let's use it instead for what it is, a physical representation expressed in kilograms, just like the colors describe eyes and hair.

TRASCRIZIONE E LINK [ENG translation below]

    E noi giù a piangere.

Still Cristina Marras, still my podcast, 3 raw minutes, and still forced to use an artificial voice because I've been voiceless for 4 days. I'm getting treatment, the situation is slightly improving but I still can't speak, I'm using the iPad as a whiteboard to communicate.

Once the update on the status of my work tool is over, I'm going to talk about the rooster killed out of revenge.

I have been a vegetarian for a quarter of a century and I started eating meat again about ten years ago, I add that whatever you eat is your business, right? So this is not a comment on what people eat as I am only interested in what I eat.

On Facebook I saw a series of images that struck me: the face of a 3-4 year old girl with bruises and abrasions. Oh my God, I thought, who did this to the little one? I read the caption: it was a rooster that the family kept in the courtyard. I don't know the reasons for the argument between the rooster and the little girl, so I won't comment, but let's move on to the gallery of the photos published: so, a couple of close-ups of the little girl with shiny eyes and scratches on her face, neck, behind her ears… (OMG What was that, a fighting cock?), close-up on rooster's legs, happy laughing little girl posing with dead rooster, frying pan with sizzling oil and meatballs, smiling little girl eating meatballs.

I was immediately reminded of a Christmas when my brother and I were little older than the rooster's girl. We grew up in an apartment in the city, and at the time Cagliari didn't have parks with animals running around, we weren't allowed to keep animals at home and therefore we only saw the animals on television. We are with our parents in Serri, a small village, visiting our grandparents.

The grandparents' house is very old, made of stone, with a vegetable garden, a stone oven for the bread, a fig tree, a gigantic barn and of course the farmyard, and this Christmas, in addition to geese and chickens, at my grandparents' house there was also a turkey.

Now, my brother and I had only seen a turkey in books and we were terrified and fascinated, because we were very small and it was very big, and it went goof-goof-goof and chased after us and we ran away and screamed and laughed and have fun like this. We're city kids, we're naive, we can't think of anything when they bring the roast to the table on Christmas night.

Too bad there's always the usual stupid uncle who makes fun of us because we cry when they give us cheese with worms. You see, the stupid uncle has a lot of fun telling us that we're eating the turkey we've been playing with all day.

And we down crying like there is no tomorrow.

LINK & TRASCRIZIONE (ENG translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I'm still completely voiceless, so you'll have to endure a few more days with the artificial voice.

Yes, today is the third day that I wake up and I can't talk, I can't even clear my throat. Thanks once again to the technology that allows me to use this program that transforms text into voice, and the voice isn't that bad either, don't you think?

Yesterday my friend Alessio sent me a message at midnight to ask me how do I reconcile the mantra of the three raw minutes [this podcast], always rigorously improvised in front of the microphone, with the fact that since I lost my voice I've been 'writing' more than speaking. Don't worry Alessio, I also improvise in front of the keyboard and I don't make corrections, neither to the text nor to the audio, you have to take my word for it.

Of course this business with the voice is truly torture, also because often the others, for heaven's sake in very good faith, don't realize how difficult it is NOT to answer when they ask you questions, and they keep asking me the questions, like my mother who calls me on the phone to ask me what treatment the doctor has given me, and try on to explain her that the most important thing of all is absolute silence and that to tell her what the doctor has given me, I should instead speak.

In these three days of total silence I remembered a black and white movie that I saw when I was a child, when television only had one channel, and Monday was the night when they showed a movie. I remember it very well, I was very impressed by this movie, because it was different from the ones they usually broadcast.

First of all, the movie was set completely in one room, I think it was a hotel room, and the whole movie was just a woman making a very long phone call, sitting on her bed, twisting the phone cord between her fingers, then she would walk around the room and scream, cry, and you would never see who was on the other end of the phone.

Another thing that struck me was that the woman was Anna Magnani, an actor I was used to seeing play the role of the mother, the working class woman, while I had never seen her play something so different, so theatrical, even if at the time I had never been to the theater and I had no idea what the word 'theatrical' meant, but I instinctively understood that it was different from the others, and it had captured all my attention.

It was only many years later, as an adult, that I was able to recover that strange black and white film that had so impressed me as a child. It was a drama anthology film, and the episode with Anna Magnani was directed by Roberto Rossellini, based on a story by Jean Cocteau. It was the story of a woman who spoke on the phone with her lover who would marry someone else the next day.

Blessed be the old state television that showed us a masterpiece every Monday.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Allora, cosa stavo dicendo?

    TRANSLATION
No, you haven't got the wrong podcast, it's still me, Cristina Marras, and these are my three raw minutes, and I'm still without my voice, but today, unlike yesterday, I don't get the podcast done by artificial intelligence but I write it on a Word sheet and then I have it read by the program that transforms the text into voice.

I begin by saying a banality that cannot be more banal than this, and that is that it is precisely the most important things that we take most for granted, take me, I who work with my voice rarely pause to reflect on this miracle that is the way we human beings emit sounds in such an articulate way that we can even make our voice do somersaults if we want.

Yet it is not the first time that I have lost my voice, in fact before it happened to me much more often, so much so that I went to have myself checked by an otolaryngologist who had inserted a probe down my throat to see that there was nothing serious - but let me tell you, disgusting!

The voice is a strange, very strange thing that is influenced by a lot of external factors, you know the way of saying "have a lump in your throat" or even "have a choked voice"? because the voice more than any other element of our person is able to reveal information about our emotional state.

You know when it's enough to hear a loved one on the other end of the phone answer "Hello?" and you, even from that single word, you do understand that there is something wrong. And even if the person tells you that there is nothing, the tone of voice tells you exactly the opposite, and if you go to reflect and ask yourself "But why do I have the impression that there is something wrong?" it's really hard to put into words: it's a particular inflection, a longer than usual before saying "Hello?" sometimes it seems to me that even the silence left after a word is able to convey meanings.

And anyway I'm here, I've reached just over 360 words, I know that to get exactly to 3 minutes I have to write about 428.

So what was I saying? Yes, I was saying that the voice is this strange thing that we really take for granted, we don't stop for a moment to reflect how important it is and – let's face it – practical, yes speaking aloud is really practical, I won't tell you how boring it is to go around with pen and paper for communicate the important things and not be able to comment on everything else.

But the strangest thing is that I don't recognize myself, so suddenly without my voice, I don't feel the same person, and now that I'm voiceless I realize that I talk a lot even when I'm alone, you know when for example I drop something and I say "Oh, no!" or I hear something nice on the radio or in a podcast and exclaim "How nice!".

Then what about the pain of having to get up and go to the other room to talk to my husband and no longer being able to shout while sitting comfortably at my desk "Honey, what about preparing prepare a nice cup of tea?"

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

"Ciao a tutti!

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I have completely lost my voice. Yesterday I went out and... oh well... Anyway, still, I don't want to forgo the three minutes podcast but I certainly can't do it in these conditions. And then I came up with a brilliant idea. I put some generative text on the Artificial Intelligence site and then put it in a program that turns text into speech. And this is what came of it.

"Hello everyone! Welcome to my 3 raw minutes. Yesterday I must have caught a cold, or humidity, the fact is that this morning I woke up not having a thread of voice anymore, I was completely voiceless. I tried to record something but – as you had the opportunity to verify just before – my voice croaks and is truly unlistenable, in addition to the fact that if I want to recover as soon as possible, I should keep in absolute silence, which is very difficult for me since I like to talk.

But how could I do so that I didn't have to skip today's episode of the three raw minutes? I thought about resorting to technology, or rather, artificial intelligence, better still, generative artificial intelligence and so I gave my instructions, asking the most complete generative artificial intelligence, i.e. Chat-GPT - to write the podcast for me of today, using my light tone and conversational style.

I wasn't sure what would come of it, but I must say that the result was quite surprising, especially considering the fact that the first time I gave the command I asked it to generate text in the style of Cristina Marras of the “Three Minuti Grezzi” and the answer was “I don't know any Cristina Marras.”

So I had to rack my brain trying to issue commands that resulted in what was supposed to look like text spontaneously generated by my mind, as I usually do when recording my three minutes.

Well, I've found that the AI is able to capture my tone of voice and writing style and create an episode that sounds like I recorded it myself. But what will be the topic that artificial intelligence decides to speak on my behalf? Let's see.

It decided to talk about how technology is changing the way we communicate and how artificial intelligence can be used to help us push our limits. In this episode, generative artificial intelligence invites you to reflect on how technology is changing our world and how we can use it to improve our lives."
