LINK e TRASCRIZIONE (ENG translation below)

Ho finito molto velocemente quel libro.

    ENGLISH translation with links
When in November they assigned the various Nobel prizes, including the one for literature, I was distracted, so I had no idea that Annie Ernaux was the person who won the Nobel Prize for literature last year. So, when I happened to be in the library and saw this book entitled Look at the lights, My Love, a beautiful cover [in the Italian edition] with a blank field and a small shopping cart. I am passionate about shopping carts, supermarkets, and everything that evokes non-places, liminal spaces, also because then I suffer from Gruen Transfer, which I will talk to you about at another time.

I began reading this little book of about eighty pages, which reads very quickly, I read it in one day and I was struck by the fact that Annie Ernaux (I don't even know if it's pronounced like that, I don't speak French) has an incredible ability to describe in a very simple and incredibly poetic, deep way, small realities that are what we all live every day.

In fact, by reading this book, what did she want to do in this book? She went to a supermarket, particularly one specific, Auchan, and began to describe what she saw. You know, we all do it: you see the couple fighting because he wants to buy one product and she wants to buy another, or you see the retiree looking for small change in his wallet, then handing the coins to the cashier so that she can choose the coins, people who do things quickly, people who do them slowly, in short, a sample of humanity.

But what characterizes this writer is that she manages to infuse poetry even in the most banal things, in the most pedestrian things. One phrase stuck with me, the phrase says "the murmur of the supermarket at peak hour reminds me of the noise of the sea when you fall asleep on the beach," after a sentence like that, how can you not melt and fall madly in love with this writer?

I finished that book very quickly. I immediately ran to the library to get another one and now I've just started reading A Frozen Woman, another of her books and this one is spectacular too. There's all the first part where she talks about the women in her life, and it's incredible because she was born in the 1940s, so she's older than me, but (and then she was born in France, I was born in Sardinia) but the way she describes these women, these atmospheres, these places, how she used to play as a child, I see myself a lot in it.

Anyway, I'm immersed in reading and now I'll shoot all the books of this writer that I like so much and that I recommend you to pick up: quick reading, beautiful reading and it bring some poetry in your day.

    TRANSLATION
The Barbies have gone on strike, they are tired and fed up with being relegated to only 50% of the population.

What happened? It happened that in Spain the Ministry of Consumers, which in itself having a ministry of consumers is a wonderful thing because it is a ministry that fights for us consumers, the Ministry of Consumers has launched a self-regulation code for toy advertising .

From now on, in Spain people will have to think twice before advertising toys divided by colour, pink for girls and blue for boys. It will no longer be possible to advertise toys where you see the good adults who give away toys and the bad ones who don't. It will no longer be possible to use advertising for toys as a reason for social acceptance (you know those advertisements where you see boys and girls who have toys that are incredibly popular with their peers and those without toys who are sad and alone in a corner).

It will no longer be possible to advertise with gender stereotypes, apart from the blue/pink for boys/girls, but also the type of toy that is offered to boys/girls, so usually there are toys for boys that invite to experimentation, physical activity, technological discoveries, while the pink toys - for girls - invite to games that have to do with care, such as being a nurse, household values, the vacuum cleaner, the kitchenette or the cosmetics to be beautiful.

Another point of this self-regulatory code is that you cannot sexualize advertising aimed at boys and girls, especially girls, you know the advertisements for cosmetics, make-up, all these things like bras for four-year-old girls, in short, sexualization that... okay that's another matter.

It is a self-regulatory code, so I don't think they impose fines now, but it is certainly a positive sign.

Why did I start by saying that Barbie went on strike? Because to accompany or to announce this Code of self-regulation, they made a very nice video, which is an animation of toy puppets who, in fact, hold an assembly and say enough, we are sick and tired, we want to go on strike, don't play anymore with us (I think December 12, any day anyway), because we want everyone to have the opportunity to play with us.

In short, think about it the next time you buy a gift for a boy or girl.

TRASCRIZIONE CON LINK (English translation below)
I mestieri scompaiono sempre.

    TRANSLATION

Jobs always disappear. Except that when we find ourselves in the period in which our mums and dads' jobs are disappearing, we remain hesitant for a moment and many of the jobs that our parents did, that seemed completely normal to us, such as bus driver, soon they will no longer exist, they will be replaced by other professions.

For many of these professions of the future, there is not even a name yet. In fact, ten years ago no one would have dreamed of wanting to grow up as a creator of instructions for generative artificial intelligence. What is that? It means creating strings of questions and descriptions, no, more than descriptions, precisely instructions to be fed to the computers that process artificial intelligence.

If until recently this was a task reserved for people who had studied electronic engineering, applied linguistics, etc., now anyone can do it, from their own home computer, even from a mobile phone, using GPT-3 for example, which is an interface that you can use without knowing machine language, so without ever having done coding, you simply ask questions, it can be questions asked using natural language as we speak.

I have tried to use it several times and every time I am amazed, first by the speed with which the answers are given, then by the completeness and also by the length of the answers. I asked things like "what is the situation of the podcast in Italy?" and it made a really intelligent analysis and that actually responds to what is also my experience.

But it's not easy to get things that are intelligent or anything that doesn't sound like something copied, already seen many times, by computers that use generative artificial intelligence. There is a whole technique that is now being taught in these courses where one learns, which are practically the ways of journalism, a bit like that... You know, how certain journalists always manage to make interesting interviews even when they do interviews a stone, on the other hand other people, even when they interview an incredibly brilliant person, they come up with some flat stuff. Well, it's always about knowing how to ask questions.

However, if you are interested in a profession of the future, the creator of instructions for generative artificial intelligence is certainly one that will be talked about in the near future.

TRASCRIZIONE CON LINK (English translation & links below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION WITH LINKS
For a series of reasons absolutely unknown to me that we can call chance, I happened to read two Japanese books one after the other, both with a number in the title and both books that completely captured my attention, in fact all the time I was reading these books I was doing nothing else.

The first I've read in chronological order is The Seven Killers of the Shinkansen [English title Bullet Train] by the author Isaka Kotaro, a book from which they also released a movie, titled Bullet Train, a few months ago.

I speak briefly about the book: The Seven Killers of the Shinkansen is exactly what the title suggests. You have the Shinkansen, which is the Bullet train, the super-fast train that you find in Japan (it's also in other parts of the world, but this one in particular is in Japan) and during a non-stop journey there are seven killers on this train, chasing and killing each other in the most daring ways possible. Imagine Tarantino, but with the irony and depth of Japanese culture.

I particularly liked the book, also because I've been there on the Shinkansen (and I would love to go back), so I could really imagined the scenes, I imagined the movements from one carriage to another. Unlike many Japanese books I've read, this one by Isaka Kotaro has a very great cinematic sense, in fact the first thing I thought while reading it was "this would be a fantastic film". In fact, even the film, usually films based on books are not so good, instead they managed to do something let's say that even if it doesn't totally reflect the book, also because the book is so daring, so full of somehow reflective parts and so on, which would be very difficult to render in a blockbuster film, but it is a highly enjoyable film nevertheless.

The second book, which has a number in the title is The Four Housewives of Tokyo [English title: Out] by Natsuo Kirino. This is also a quite daring book even if less, let's say, Tarantino-like, here too there are some crimes that I won't tell you about because I don't want to spoil it, but it's really worth reading, and - among other things - I saw on Wikipedia that they made a movie also from this book.

An interesting thing is that once I finished The Four Housewives of Tokyo I realized that I had another nice book by Natsuo Kirino at home, whose title I don't even remember, which however I had started reading but that I had left after about fifty pages because it didn't convince me. Well, I'll go back to it and will finish reading.

    TRANSLATION
I live in a building that has eight floors. There are five apartments on each floor, which means more or less 40 households. Many of these are made up of people who live alone, almost all ladies of a certain age, then there are families. In general, let's say that most of the people who live in my building are very kind and very cordial, we always greet each other on the stairs when we take the lift, now no longer together, because since COVID now you travel alone or with your family in the lift, we chat, I'm always happy to exchange a few words, even when we meet them on the street or at the supermarket.

In the building, however, there is someone who doesn't like to chat and doesn't even like to return greetings. This intrigues rather than angering me, oh well, it's a bit rude if you greet and they do not answer, but it intrigues me: how can a person who meets you face to face, like I'm leaving and this person is entering, and I say "Good morning!" and this person doesn't answer, their gaze passes over my head and they don't answer.

This really intrigues me a lot, I find it fascinating because I identify with this person and I imagine, maybe this person is caught up in thoughts? But how is it possible that they are always, always, always so absorbed in thinking about other things? I wouldn't be able to ignore someone who greets me, even if they were someone who, IDK, I dislike.

But I realize that it's a completely different way of dealing with others, with life, and just like all different things, I find this utterly fascinating. I'm the exact opposite, I never miss an opportunity to chat with strangers, with people I don't know. For any reason, sometimes to compliment, if I see a lady wearing a nice dress "Ah, what a beautiful dress, ma'am!" and usually people smile and appreciate.

I've never really met someone like this. I've only seen such characters in movies, and when it happens, I usually find them hardly believable, precisely because they're not close to my reality. And yet I really put my effort into it and greet this person with an extra dose of enthusiasm, partly to provoke them because I want to see how far they go in not greeting me and partly because I know that if a person ignores you, it's the best way to spite them: been even more present in their field of vision.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 373 Matrimoni finti

    TRANSLATION
People have always fake married. Think of all the 30th, 40th, 50th wedding anniversary ceremonies where people, say husband and wife, because those are the traditional roles, go back to church, sometimes in front of a priest and pretend to get married again.

The fake marriages that we see today have a somewhat particular character, let's say they are more ecumenical to stay on the religious theme, because they are not marriages at all. People get married fake, they often do it in dream locations, such as cruise ships with Swarovski crystal stairs and all the staff in high uniform lined up on the sides Cinderella style.

But there are also fake marriages, fake in inverted commas, because these people maybe can't really get married, just think of all the limits that Italian legislation puts on real marriages, all the people who can't get married for one reason or another other.

Among these weddings, however, there are also secular-humanistic ceremonies that try to take away from the church what is the primacy of doing things big, because it's not difficult to understand, a civil wedding in front of the mayor lasts more or less as long as this 3-minute podcast of mine, ends in a rush, and there are those who do not want to give up (and rightly so) the idea of a wedding with great pomp, with lots of guests, with speeches, with all the official mood, and all the direction and all the theatricality that is instead guaranteed by a wedding in the church. In fact, even the Union of Italian Agnostics [transcription note: the exact name is Union of Atheists and Rationalist Agnostics] offers these ceremonies complete with scripts and screenplays that put them on a par with church weddings.

I got married during the pandemic with my husband, witnesses and my son, there were practically five of us. The whole thing lasted less than 3 minutes and then of course we couldn't do anything because it was full pandemic. But let's say that in order to sign a contract - because this is what we wanted to do - it was more than enough. Because we display our love, allow me to say something super schmaltzy, my husband shows me his love every morning when he makes me coffee, this is true love.

    LINK: https://www.doesthedogdie.com/categories/

    TRASCRIZIONE (translation below)

    TRANSLATION

When scenes that annoy me appear on television, I close my eyes and often miss a large part of what happens on the screen, even if I then get the people who are with me to tell me about it. So it is with great joy that I discovered the existence of a site that warns viewers about the presence of scenes that can be annoying. The site is called Does the Dog Die, of course I'll put the link in the podcast notes.

In addition to being a useful service, it's a lot of fun to go and read a little about the categories that annoy some people. Oh well, there are the canonical categories that we can all imagine, that is scenes where the dog, the cat, the horse die, scenes of fights between animals or in any case where there is animal abuse.

Then there are also other types of scenes that can be annoying, for example if there are insects, there are spiders, if there are abuses of different kinds, then there is a whole list of tortures that I won't tell you because it would give me nightmares tonight.

But it's fun to also see categories that aren't so obvious, for example there's someone who doesn't want to see scenes in movies where the dragon dies. Oh well, it's still an animal. Then there are some people who don't want to see scenes set in the shower, I don't know if this is a nudity problem or a problem related to Hitchcock's films. Then there are of course the clowns, and that's okay, everyone knows that some people have problems seeing clowns; scenes with the camera making sudden movements, and I understand this too, because yes, me too when I see scenes for example recorded on a roller coaster, I look a bit and then I have to look away; people who don't want to see scenes where the 4th wall breaks. I went to check. But why? What's wrong with the 4th wall? Because it can give problems to those suffering from paranoia or anxiety, you know when you think everyone is watching you, that the movies are really talking about you?

Then there are people who have problems seeing scenes where there are betrayals within the couple, in short, there is a very long list, not only that, but then you can also make suggestions, just in case your phobia, your annoyance was not included in the one listed on the Does the Dog Die site. You can surely follow the link I put in the program notes and suggest your phobia too, so we can watch our TV series peacefully, eating popcorn without having to close our eyes.

    TRANSLATION
When I was little there were holidays that we used to celebrate as a family, which we don't celebrate so much now. One was the name day: every July 24th my mum made me a cake and we celebrated, as we celebrate birthdays, we also exchanged gifts. Another festivity that I remember when I was a child was the Befana (Epiphany). I have a very, very vivid memory in my mind of me as a child getting up on the morning of the Befana, running to my parents' bedroom, climbing onto my parents' bed which I remember very high, I really had to climb and I don't know, you know, memories are something not 100% correct, sometimes they don't correspond to reality, anyway I don't think my mother had my present under her pillow, but I remember this image, me climbing up the big bed and my mother giving me the Befana gift and I remember very well that it was a carton with pots and small kitchen tools inside. You know those sheets where there is the plastic object kept in place by a piece of die-cast transparent cellophane, an incredibly inexpensive, very small, very modest thing. But I remember my amazement, also because a characteristic of this type of presentation of small toys is that, precisely to make up for the cheapness of the object being sold, the cardboard on which the objects are placed, is usually very colorful and they also design incredibly suggestive, very interesting, very intriguing scenes that act as a corollary to the object that you give as a gift. And it worked great for me, I've always been gullible about any kind of publicity, marketing stunt, gadget, I always fall into it willingly, and in fact, I remember that rather than playing with the saucepans that I used in my little kitchen as a child pretending to prepare little snacks, I got lost, I made up the stories by looking at the pictures of these beautiful chubby housewives, actually no, they weren't housewives, they were little girls with chubby cheeks pretending to be housewives. And I got lost and imagined living in these beautiful houses, which were the same American-style houses I saw on television, which were also shown on the cover of my plastic saucepans, rigorously pink. And it came back to me today, because today is the Befana, it's a festivity that I no longer celebrate. And in any case, the holidays that are no longer celebrated are also good for this, to rekindle our memories, to make us remember things.

    TRANSLATION
Being left with the mobile without battery is one of the nightmares of modern life. This is why I was surprised when I stumbled upon an app called Die With Me, a rather macabre title. It's a purchasable app that lets you use your phone to chat only when there's less than 5% battery left. The app comes with a very dramatic video, with dramatic music. I stumbled upon it and I asked myself, what is an app like this for? Then I realized, doing a bit of research, that this app is another brilliant idea from a conceptual artist who has a particular interest in technology and all things surveillance.

His name is Dries Depoorter, he is a Belgian artist and in fact he created, he built his career as an artist precisely on privacy and interaction with technology. And all of his works are characterized precisely by the use of technology and then by the fact that they can be purchased, and the money naturally goes to the good artist for him. I'll give you some examples of other works of art that he has done from which he also makes money and good for him.

There's Quick Fix which is a machine, a vending machine, you know, the very physical, analogue ones, where you put money starting at €1 and you can buy likes on Instagram. It's very nice to watch the video because there's this gigantic box, you put in a 1€ coin, then you have to type your name on Instagram on a keyboard and the likes you've bought arrive immediately.

There are also slightly more poetic things like Border Birds, where via connection to a series of public cameras he shows birds crossing state lines, and this of course is a commentary on border crossing.

But what gives the title to today's 3 minutes is Short Life. What is it about? It's a little watch that shows how much percentage of life is left to live based on the parameters you put in, I guess, when you buy the watch, so age, gender, lifestyle, etc. It costs $165 and, for anyone who wants a memento mori of their life to keep on their desk, to look at constantly to remind us of our vulnerability, this is an excellent investment. I'll put all the links for these fantastic things by the artist in the program notes and invite you to browse.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 369 Quadernini

    TRANSLATION
Still having the notebooks from when you went to school, once you become an adult, is a great luxury. It means that there was someone, an adult, who kept them when we were children, we were too young to understand what importance they could have, tens of years later, once we are adults. But it's also the luxury of having somewhere to keep the dozens or maybe even hundreds of notebooks accumulated over a school career. A luxury never having had to move house or country or continent.

I have very few notebooks from when I went to elementary school, maybe 1 or 2, and when I pick them up again, it's nice to see my handwriting from when I was a child and also read the very naive, sometimes touching things that were written when we were children.

So you can imagine my happiness when I discovered that there is an "Archive of School Notebooks". It is an archive that has about 1500 Italian notebooks written by boys and girls starting from the end of the eighteenth century and up to the early 2000s, there are also a thousand notebooks written by boys and girls from other countries. And this archive also has a wonderful website, in fact that's where I got this information from (I'll include the link to the site in the program notes) and the site is very well done because, in addition to showing what the children were writing, also publishes the actual notebooks, so the squared and lined notebooks.

Browsing through the site in this way, I focused on a couple of gems, and reading between the lines of the writings, all that is that creates a society emerges. So they write about festivities and the inevitable change of seasons, but we also read between the lines the superstructures put up by adults, like the 5th grade child who in his essay "Self-Portrait" states "My mom says that if only for a moment I would shut up, all the bells of Macerata would ring, but when I don't speak she gets worried immediately". And who cannot identify with this type of relationship between mother and child?

I absolutely invite you to go and sift through and read between the lines of these compositions written by children in all of the periods. There is a displaced girl in Seveso who dreams of returning to Milan, written in 1945 during WW2, in short, you will spend some time remembering when you were boys and girls. Maybe it makes you want to go get your now notebook.
