  • 3' grezzi Ep. 268 Preti, sciamani e Israele

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [English below]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Today for the first time in many years I have again attended a mass in a Catholic church. When I was a child I always went to church and from that period I still knew the liturgy by heart, so all the parts were recited by the priest, today I realized that I still remember all the prayers, but also all the exchanges during the mass. There are two things that struck me a lot, precisely because it was a long time since I had attended mass and then when I went to church, as a child, I was a fervent Catholic, now I am no longer so, so I look at things a little from the outside. The first thing that struck me is how many times during the various passages of the mass the priest pronounced the word Israel: the people of Israel, the city of Israel, the war, and the people fighting. Lots of references to Israel, it really struck me, because I didn't remember it, and it made me think: a person who is not interested in international politics, who therefore has no opinion on the events that happen in Israel, especially in Palestine, a person who does not follow politics, but who goes to church every Sunday, find themselves having a positive opinion of Israel by default, simply because the priest every Sunday repeats Israel here, Israel there. I imagine that this person, who does not deal with politics, therefore does not know absolutely what is happening in that part of the world, when they then read in the newspapers, or hear 'Israel' on television, of course, they will be on Israel's side, why? Because it is part of the church, it is part of the Catholic religion. The second thing that struck me is that at a certain point during the service the priest took the censer full of incense and went around waving it to let out the smell of incense. At that moment he had his dress with all the vestments, so he was dressed for the occasion, like all priests who celebrate mass, but what struck me is that he looked like a shaman, he reminded me of the images of all the shamans that I have seen in my life, both American Indians, but also Aborigines, Asian, walking around with a piece of wood, a piece of coal or anything from which smoke comes out and wave it around to send away wicked spirits. That's it, the priest reminded me of the shaman, and then let's say that the priest is a bit like the shaman of Catholics, right?

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

Friends who follow me on my social channels, especially those who follow me on SoundCloud where I post my podcasts which, as opposed to these 3 uncute minutes, are quite elaborate and require lots of work both before recording and after recording, so, the friends who follow me on socials will have noticed that for some time now I am creating explorations on darkness. I have published two so far, I am about to publish the third. What is it about? These are actual explorations, reflections that I am making on the meaning of darkness, and this is part of a project on which I am collaborating with two dear friends, I still do not want to go into too much detail, a bit because I don't want to jinx it, a bit because, in fact, we are now writing the project, it is in its very, very, very, very, initial and preliminary stages, however, it is a project that, if it goes on as we imagined it, will allow us to explore darkness. I started these little explorations of mine precisely with those tools I have at my disposal, that is with audio and podcasts. As part of these explorations of mine, I happened to ask my friends what darkness meant to them, what were the images that came to mind when you think of the word darkness, and the results have been incredible, because there are actually 20,000 different ways of interpreting darkness that for many is really nothing sad, but rather makes them think of moments of relaxation, moments of tranquillity, moments that you spend with friends when you are not working, therefore moments of peace dedicated to yourself. I too have begun to reflect on darkness and the different meanings that are given to it, even from a cultural point of view, just think of the Enlightenment movement, all completely based on the fact that the Enlightenment comes to disperse the darkness that is intrinsically a negative thing, and instead from these explorations of mine more and more it turns out that it is true that darkness can be conceived and understood as a negative force, but often darkness is also the thing that allows us to be calm and to look inside ourselves.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Let's start by saying that we Italians are unlucky because for some whim of our language, when there are 10 women and 1 man in a room, I have to use the masculine to address all these 11 people in a grammatically flawless way, because in the Italian language the masculine predominates, the masculine is the neutral, generic way, when I want to say things 'in general' when I don't mean particularly men or women. But the paradoxical thing is that this 'neutral' is actually not neutral at all but is precisely the grammatical male form. Now, this is sometimes difficult to manage when it comes to words ending in -a or -o, as a translator I usually put a / o that is studente/essa and so on. But there are other uses of the language when you want to say 'the human race' and instead, you say 'man', so "man has always sought science". No, it is not men, if anything, it's the human race, not men, because if I say 'men' even if mean men and women, however in reality I am actually saying 'men'. Now it is true that the Italian language is a bit unfortunate from this point of view because it forces us to do and the ju-jitsu of words and therefore to invent new ways to not offend, actually, doesn't have anythign to do with offend, it's about inclusion, to make people who read and listen to part of the conversation, but there are very simple tricks that anyone can use without needing to feel like a champion of equality (some people do not want to be seen as champions of equality) for example, instead of saying 'the man and the sea' - and I'm not referring now to the title of Hemingway's novel - but if I want to do an exhibition that talks about the sea and how human beings relate to the sea, instead of saying 'the man and the sea' I can invent other ways, for example people and the sea, human beings and the sea, individuals and the sea, in short trying to avoid the use of the word 'man' when instead I want to include men, women and everything there is in the big variety, in this great rainbow of genres that, fortunately, we have the right to inhabit as we please and like.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 264 Lavare per terra
Ode ad una tecnologia mai abbastanza apprezzata.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [ENGLISH TRANSLATION BELOW]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
First of all, don't worry if you hear beeping noises in the background because I have the windows open, or at least some windows are open, because I have just mopped the floor and I want it to dry thoroughly before I go out. And this is precisely what I want to talk to you about, that is, I want to celebrate something that in my opinion is not celebrated enough, that is, the advances that have been made in the technology that allows us to mop the floor. When I was a child, the moment of the day when my mother mopped the floor, and this moment came at least once a day, we lived in a very small house and then, you know, Italian mothers are a bit fanatical about cleaning, but it always came this moment, a moment feared by me and my brother, because we had to ... you know "the floor is lava", that you cannot touch the ground? Just like that: we had to stay like stones, motionless in a corner , and yet there was always something incredibly important that we had to do on the other side of the room, so there was always my mom going around with this bucket full of water, with the rag to mop the ground, which she wrung out with her hands, with the stick to mop etc. etc. Think how much this technology has changed, because it is a technology, they are tools that allow us to keep the house clean and healthy, too. Towards the end of the 80s I think, the Vileda Mop appeared and this was already a crazy thing, do you remember the Vileda Mop? And then slowly other tools appeared that allow you to mop the floor without getting your hands dirty, without effort. I use one that I realise is already several years old now, but it seems to me absolutely futuristic because there is a stick with a kind of plunger that I press, there is a centrifuge that cleans these mop-hairy things ... it's a completely different experience from how our mothers did it. In my opinion, we should think more about these technologies because they are the technologies that we use the most, that we use almost every day. Think also how much the invention of the washing machine has contributed to freeing up time for women, who could therefore use that time to do other things, perhaps even to study. In fact, I read an article somewhere where they stated that the washing machine is one of the fundamental elements that allowed the advancement of women in the social fabric from, as far as paid work is concerned, because imagine just washing the sheets by hand what it meant, I mean I can barely wash the delicate socks by hand, but oh well we better leave it. Anyway, long live the tools that allow us to mop the ground effortlessly and above all without getting our hands wet.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 263 Certi commenti, evitateceli

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (ENGLISH TRANSLATION below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I'm talking about feedback again. Yes, I know that I have already dedicated an episode of my podcast '3 uncut' to feedback, that is to give an opinion that is sometimes requested and sometimes is uncalled-for. And today I want to talk about when the opinion is given and not only had not been requested, but it does not bring anything positive for anyone. I'll give you an example. You see a girlfriend and you say "Ah, these pants make you fat, they make you look fatter". And yes, I'm not being very subtle on purpose, you will have noticed. So, what can the person saying such a thing can hope to achieve? That her friend tells her "Thank you, I didn't notice, thank goodness you're here telling me these things, because I'm not already stressed enough of my own with body image, bombarded and hammered by messages from everywhere, telling me that I must always look young, beautiful, thin, etc., etc.? Thanks for telling me, I hadn't noticed! " Or another answer could be: "Ah, thank goodness you told me so, wait I'll take them off immediately and burn them in a big bonfire in the square, this will also serve as a warning for all the other people wearing pants that make them look fatter." No, I'm joking about it, but it's something that bothers me a lot, because there is this obsession with the way women look and it's really only about women, because nobody cares about telling men with a belly, look at you, how ugly you look in this tight-fitting t-shirt, because nobody gives a damn, just how it should be. But everyone feels more or less in the right, indeed in the duty to open the eyes to us women who do not realise that the things we put on do not make us look just like the images of the advertisement that hammers us and that from the cradle forces us to appear, rather than to be. Pay attention to it: when you see a little girl, the things people say to the little girl are "Oh how cute you are! Oh what a beautiful dress you are wearing!" You never hear anyone saying "Wow! Look how adventurous you are! How I love the way you hold the sling or the way put your hands on your hips to make the world understand that if it wants to hurt you, you're ready to defend yourself." Never anyone paying a compliment to a little girl because she runs fast. So, let's think about it: when we make a comment, when we give feedback, let's ask ourselves before making the comment, what do I hope to achieve? And if we can't give ourselves an answer to this question, then, just leave it, leave it.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO
Ecco qua.

I was under the impression that I had already told you about my hairdressers, but I went to check the titles of my '3 uncut' podcast, starting from the first episode, that is, from January 4th to today, and I found no trace. In case I already told you about them, well get another episode where I talk about my hairdressers because I love my hairdressers. You see, the hairdresser, together with the dentist and the gynaecologist, are those professionals you miss most when you change city, imagine when you change the continent. It took me a while to find the professionals. I found a good family doctor, I made an episode of my 3 uncut podcast on him too; I found a good dentist, and I did an entire radio play on them where I tell about the extraction of my wisdom tooth, and I found my beloved hairdressers. What is special about the hairdressers where I go, called Valerio and Cristina? When you enter, you do not have the impression of entering a hairdresser. You know, all the mirrors, those chairs? You see, when I go to my hairdressers, it feels like I am entering a ... I'm in a sushi bar or in any case in one of those shops that in English is called "something-something -bar". There is a counter, all along, all in view, then there are all the bottles, of excellent products, and then when they have to prepare the colour and the things they do, they take the precision scale, they measure it in front of you, it feels like being at the grocer's, at the pharmacist's. It's beautiful. Besides, they are very nice. They are a young couple and we have good chats, we listen to each other. Yes, every time I go to the hairdresser, and I never go there often enough, I relax and I come out more beautiful than ever. If you saw me today, I even had my hair straightened, which for us people with naturally curly hair, having straight hair is always a dream, but they don't last long on me ... not even until my next shower, in fact, it's enough for me to think harder than usual, and my hair is curly again. Yes, I wanted to say that it is nice when you have around serious professionals with whom it is also a pleasure to chat, when you are in an environment, in a relaxing environment, always with beautiful music. And, yes, I'm happy about them. I wanted to tell you and to share this with you. I hadn't been to the hairdresser for a couple of months, in fact, I looked like a wild boar, but you know, with the holidays, the laziness and everything else I let it go a bit, but if you saw me now, I'm gorgeous, more beautiful than ever. There you go.

    TRASCRIZIONE (English translation below)

If they were to ask me, Cristina, in your opinion, which animal in the world has been most successful from the point of view of the evolution of the species? I think that the human being would come to mind, given the damage we have been able to do, but it is not the human being, strictly from the point of view of evolution the most successful animal in the world is the fly, the one that we call it 'fly' but that is actually a whole category there is a taxonomy of belonging to the order of Diptera, but let's proceed with order. Why am I telling you about flies? Because autumn is approaching, at least in this part of the hemisphere, and flies are beginning to be seen around. This reminded me of a book I heard about a few weeks ago entitled "Super Fly" with the subtitle "The Unexpected Lives of the World's Most Successful Insects". A book that I still do not think has been translated into Italian, the author is Jonathan Balcombe, I will put the link of the program notes, and what does this gentleman say? He says that precisely because of their ability to diversify, flies are the undisputed masters of our world. There are over 160,000 'described' species. It is important to put 'described' in quotes because, according to this gentleman, there are five times more 'undescribed' ones, which have not yet been observed and therefore have not been catalogued. Now the insects form 80% of the animal world, and within the category of insects, which is already the vast majority of the animal world, eh, let's say that flies occupy a considerable part, because with all their subspecies, in every moment that passes in the world there are 20 million flies... for every human being. Someone has bothered to do the math and that's about 20 quadrillion flies, don't ask me what quadrillion means because I don't know. But flies are not only annoying but are also important, in fact, flies also contribute to the pollination of flowers and fruits, and there are some species that are pollinated exclusively by flies, such as lilies and peas. Now do not think about the common fly, the house fly, because, I repeat, fly in general is the name given to this to the order of Diptera which includes flies, gnats, mosquitoes and also other six-legged insects. Yes, it is a very interesting reading because it shows us from a different point of view these little beings that at the moment we are instead so busy sending away and killing with fly-swatters on tables and all the other places in the house.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

My most loyal listeners, like Francesca M, to whom I will have to give a loyalty reward sooner or later, will know that I live with two cats: one is Mazinga, a cat weighing more than six kilos that I have had for about three years, and the other is a new entry that I have for a little over a month and is called Sputnik. In one of my previous episodes of the three uncut, I told you how I tried to follow the information found on the Internet to enter the newcomer in our menage, so as not to make Mazinga sick, to make her accept the kitten. So there was a whole procedure, using a cloth that took the smell of Sputnik, given to Mazinga to smell; cats kept strictly separate in two different rooms for a couple of weeks; separate food bowls and toilets. Well, now it seems that the two cats have become friends, or at least it seems that the tiny Sputnik has taken over the matron Mazinga. Why? Because she keeps bothering her, she keeps jumping on her and keeps stealing her food. Yes, Mazinga is a very big cat, she is a little overweight but she is also big on her own, and her size is exaggerated also by the fact that she's a cat with very long hair, so if you see her, she looks like a little panther, she is really big. This alone should be a cause for fear for the kitten. And instead, Sputnik, who is really tiny because, in addition to being very very very young, she is also a short-haired cat, yes she is not at all afraid of Mazinga, she continues to ambush her, but above all what amazes me is how Mazinga, when it happens that she has something in the bowl, Sputnik approaches and she lets her do it, that is, she lets Sputnik take away the food. I can't understand this thing here. I hope my cat Mazinger is not becoming stupid, I hope I didn't make a big mistake. It is true that one of the reasons why we took Sputnik is also because Mazinga was terribly lazy and she did not get up from her pillow all day. Indeed, the kitten's presence now forces her to move. However, I will continue to observe and continue to keep you informed about the cat menage in my house.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English below)
Sì proprio come nel Truman Show.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
There is no doubt that architecture has an impact on the way in which those who experience or go through it, feel. Think about how it feels when you enter a church, with high ceilings and gothic glass, you feel small in front of the unknown. This is a bit the philosophy that has been followed for the construction of villages for people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's. These villages in the Netherlands, that I know of are the only once for the moment, they use architecture not to heal, because these diseases are not cured (not yet) but to make the people who suffer from them feel better. Think how it is, how it confuses the architecture of traditional hospitals: so many rooms, all the same, lined up, with the same furniture inside, that even a person who does not have dementia gets confused and never knows which way to go. Here, instead, these villages are real villages, they are inspired by pre-industrial architecture, where there were houses built in circles, there were not many cars around, in these villages for dementia there are none at all, just pedestrian, but there are supermarkets, small shops, there is a hairdresser, there are all the things a person may need, and the healing power that architecture has to make us feel in the right place is exploited. Because this is basically what people suffering from dementia lack, they have this gap between the reality of their mind and the reality that surrounds them, and are often surrounded by people who keep repeating, no, your husband is not there, your husband died 30 years ago. This is not done inside the villages for dementia, they indulge the ... I can't even call them 'fantasies' because in the mind of those who experience them, they are their reality, so you go along with what the patient says. There are even bus stops, where people can sit and wait for the bus - which of course will never come by - but in this way, they have a way to readjust themselves and calm down if they were agitated. This is part of the philosophy that architecture can help us feel better and move within spaces more, let's say in a way that calms us and makes us feel at ease. An interesting thing is that all these villages have the word 'village' in the name, and that they are inspired by pre-industrial villages, even if most of the people who go to live there have never lived in a village, so they almost there to satisfy nostalgia for a place in which one would like to be, which however does not exist except in our mind. Yes just like in the Truman Show.
