    TESTO TRASCRITTO [ENGLISH BELOW]
IKEA!

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
If you've ever listened to one of my 3 uncut podcasts, you will know that IKEA is one of my favourite stores. Today I found out that IKEA has opened a digital museum. It is a website, but it is much more than a site, as is to be expected from IKEA. it is visually very, very exciting, very nice to see and navigate. It is in English and Swedish, I don't know if they also plan to add other languages, but you can easily navigate through the English section. It is also very beautiful from a design point of view because at the top of the site there is a horizontal timeline that goes from the roots of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s etc., just imagine a line with these numbers written at a distance from each other, and as you scroll down the site, the years also go by, starting from the 40s so the story of who invented IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad invented it. Then slowly also showing their concept, their design idea, how they created the first IKEA stores in Sweden, then also, there are all the advertising pages first of course on paper, for example I discovered that IKEA started selling pens and notebooks, then slowly they expanded the catalogue to include furniture in the 1950s. It is a fantastic site to browse, where you also slowly see the first IKEA catalogues, you can also browse them a little, and then when you get to the 80s, the 90s people of a certain age will also recognise the campaigns carried out by IKEA starting with diversity, remember the covers of the IKEA catalogues which were the first places where mixed families were seen, families with people who came from different parts of the world, in short, real families as they are in real life . So it's an ode to IKEA, it's an ode to IKEAism and IKEAtudine. I believe that I will spend the rest of the day sifting through and looking at the different covers, the different catalogues and the inspirations that never cease to surprise me. The only thing I hope is that Cagliari will soon have a 'nice' shop too, we have one but it is really small, eh ... I'd love one of those multi-storey three-four-story ones also with restaurant, and the IKEA restaurant was a favourite place when my son was little because it was the only place where I could set him at the table and let him do whatever he wanted. IKEA!

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 277 Il mio nuovo sito
Il mio nuovo sito è quasi pronto.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [ENGLISH BELOW]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
My new website is almost ready and in a few days, I will present it to the world. My old website was also nice, however, since it dates back to about 7 years ago, and you know, years of the Internet are like dog years, a year is worth 7, let's say that it is a site that is 50 years old. At the time when I created the old site it seemed very avant-garde, but now let's say that they are all a bit the same, thanks also (or actually because of) WordPress which offers templates and then the templates are always the same. Instead, I was lucky enough to meet a good professional who designed it for me from the beginning, that is, we didn't use a template but I put myself in front of a blank sheet of paper and said to him, here I want this, this, this, and this, and he did just that, magic! What characterises my new site which, I repeat, I hope to put everything in place and to be ready to publish in a few days, maximum a week, what I wanted to characterise my site was a sense of discovery and a sense of having to go looking for things. So, when I teach my students how to write for digital, I always say don't make those who visit your site 'work', simply give them what they are looking for and get them to find it as quickly as possible. But my site does not sell anything because what I do, my podcasts, or the lessons I teach in schools and universities, let's say that I don't sell them on the website, the website is a showcase and I wanted this showcase to reflect not only the contents but also with the form the way that I have to approach the creative process. I like to amaze, I like it when not everything is immediately obvious but there is a bit of work on the part of those who come to visit my site, that they should almost earn things. Well, on my website there are several things that will be all to be discovered. I like it very much, I am very happy with the result, I like to play with it and also this sense of play, and also sometimes the writings that will appear, if there is an error, if you want to leave me a recorded message, even my biography, yes there will be small surprises, small inventions and not always what you see and read corresponds to reality. And then, of course, there will be ample space dedicated to contact with the public, so a place where you can send me not only written messages but also voice messages, in short, now I close here and I get to work because I have to finish uploading things to the site so I can publish it.

Uh!

Uh! I'm having a knot in my stomach! When you begin reading something, or rather to listen to something that is sad, that makes you sad but continue listening. What made me sad this morning? The Newyorker Author's Voice is a podcast that I listen to once a month: The New Yorker publishes a story, which is published in the print magazine and which is read by the author. Today's short story is called "The Ghost birds" and is written by Karen Russell. It is a story set in the very near future, the year 2040, a world where birds no longer exist, where climate change and habitat destruction have meant that there are no more birds. If I had listened to this story three years ago, it would have left me indifferent, I would have simply taken it as a science fiction story, more or less, a little dystopic. Listening to it today, in October 2021, with two years of the COVID-19 pandemic behind us, the effect is very different, because when the protagonists talk about wearing a mask, a respirator, the fires that have destroyed entire forests, the lack of oxygen, the precautions that must be taken in order not to get infected, well, I repeat, three years ago it would have been a bit like reading Orwell's 1984, but today it is sadly topical and it reminds me of the feeling when you read the newspapers, the news that tell us about the dying birds, the extinct animals and all the other catastrophes that we are not only causing, but that we also refuse to stop, we also refuse to do something about, to this is added the fact that this morning here in Cagliari it was raining, it's not cold but it was raining, so imagine my situation, I'm usually pretty perky, clear voice, happy and satisfied, instead this morning uh! with a long face. No, oh well now I'll recover, now I'll get some cuddles from Mazinga and Sputnik, I make myself a nice coffee and nothing, I finish reading the story that I have not finished listening yet, I opened the page to read it, then I'll also put the link in the program notes, and let's see how it ends.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [ENGLISH BELOW]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Do not worry if you hear noises behind me: I closed the double windows in the room where I am recording but I left the door open because it is very hot. Outside there is a rather peculiar situation: there is a giant truck that carries gas tanks placed in the middle of the road, because here there is a shop that sells gas tanks, and another gigantic truck, which is the refrigerated truck that carries every morning things at the supermarket, which tries to pass so they are handling this situation. If you suddenly hear honking noises and people screaming, well that's them. Today I have to talk to you about something, let's say meta-production, in the sense that I have to talk to you about the podcast that I have been doing for 273 days, that is, from January 4th, the period in which it will turn one year is approaching, and I am wondering what to do with this podcast, because it is not that I wanted to continue indefinitely when I started, I wanted to be an experiment to see how does it feel to get in front of the microphone without having prepared anything, talking and then without doing editing. As I have already told you several times, the recording lasts exactly three minutes, precisely because I do not prepare anything and I do not do editing, but then the processing of the podcast, then the upload on the various platforms, the translation into English, and even before the translation the transcription of the three minutes, it takes a long time. So I don't know how long I will continue at the end of the year, but I wouldn't want to lose completely my daily presence in this space because it is fun. Then there are some loyal listeners, you know who you are, so I'm pondering what to do when the year is up and it will probably turn the rough three minutes into something weekly, because keeping this pace I can't, it really takes me too much time. And I could do something weekly that instead of being spontaneous and unprepared, could instead be something super elaborate, maybe still three minutes and go from three uncut minutes a day to three super refined minutes, super elaborated weekly. I'm thinking about it. If you have any ideas - you who are friends and who know me personally and who also have my email address and my various social media contacts - let me know send me a message and tell me what you think, we will think about it together, we still have a couple of months to decide and we do things together ecumenically.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 274 Scrivere a macchina

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-23282308

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [ENGLISH BELOW]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
One of the most useful skills I ever learned in high school was being able to type with ten fingers without looking at the keyboard. I went to a technical high school, although middle school teachers strongly advised me to go to a lyceum. But I had decided to enrol in a commercial school because I had the dream of graduating, finding a job and going to live alone, to be totally independent. Then in fact, once I finished high school, I was offered a job in the bank, which I, to the horror of my whole family, refused because I didn't want to hear half of working full time but I naturally wanted to continue at the university, then I moved abroad etc. But one of the things I learned in high school is typing with ten fingers. And typing, using the keyboard without looking, at a decent speed is something that helps you a lot, especially if for the rest of your life, the job you do has to do with writing. And I've had several typewriters in my life, I still have one hanging on the wall in the kitchen, yeah right on the wall, but I hardly ever use it, and I have to say that typewriters are making a comeback, and in some parts of the world they have never disappeared. Just today I was reading an article where they explain how, for example, in India outside the courts there are dozens of people who type you the copy of procedural acts, and sometimes they even translate them for you on the spot. And anyway, in countries like India, the typewriter is still used a lot because in India blackouts are widespread and therefore you cannot rely on a computer, and at the same time, typewriter, learning to type on the keyboard, is something that you will need even later when you go to work in an office where there is electricity and where computers are used, because the computer keyboard is identical to the typewriter keyboard. Moreover, even in countries where there are no major blackout problems, typewriters are used more and more because writing a document on the machine is the only way to guarantee that no one can steal it from us because, unlike the computer that however it is connected, or in any case, a hacker can enter it, with the typewriter well, that is impossible to hack then: long live the typewriters!

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [English below]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
'Squid Game' is a new Korean TV series on Netflix, and I let myself be persuaded to watch it after they assured me it is fantastic, beautiful. Don't worry if you haven't seen it yet and if you intend to watch it because I won't reveal any plot details, also because there is no plot. This is the thing that makes me a little angry: we have reached the fifth episode, the sixth episode we are missing a couple to finish the series, I have already seen in specialised magazines that they are already working on the second series, but this is not the point. So let's start from the beginning. From the visual point of view it is very beautiful, already the credits, the way in which the writings of the titles become objects... I do not know Korean, but it is certainly from the visual point of view very beautiful, and also some scenographies, in the series, recall video games such as Monument Valley, very beautiful, very accurate in all details, in all details. The problem is that in my opinion there is no plot, it is a bit like shooter video games. Again, I'm not giving you any plot details when I say it's a bit like The Hunger Games: people go there and people kill. Hey, it's not that much else that happens, it's a litany of people who die killed in various ways, sometimes even with freely graphic details, too strong for my taste, in fact I spend half the time looking at it with my hands in front of the eyes because I only read the subtitles and I don't look, I don't want to see what happens on screen. Yes, I'm a little disappointed. I repeat, I have not finished watching yet and so maybe in the last episodes there will be a backlash and suddenly the plot will jump out, but so far I have not seen any plot. For me, it's more like 'how many different ways can we show something bad'. Honestly, I don't care that much but, I repeat, I'll keep watching. There are some very good actors, very beautiful, very interesting, very fascinating. Anyway, I will continue watching the last episodes that remain for me to watch then I do not know if we will talk about it again, I doubt because I repeat I am not too confident that it will suddenly become beautiful, interesting to see.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [English below]

It had been a long time since I experienced it here in Cagliari, it used to happen quite frequently in Melbourne, finding myself in the city, and being submerged by something unforeseen that is happening, incredibly interesting, alluring, that made me feel part of a big city, where there was always something happening, there were lots of things going on. This used to happen a lot in Melbourne, especially when I was in the city, here in Cagliari a little less, but today I was returning home after visiting my mom, and yes, in the middle of the street I saw, I glimpsed my friend Michela, actually to tell the truth, rather than my friend Michela I saw the dog she was holding in her arms and I recognised first the dog, then I saw her face and recognised her too, but basically I recognised the dog, and she said to me, Cristina come along, and I, but what happens? Cristina come. So, I should explain that Michela, together with Tiziana, are two artists who constitute Le Lucido Sottile group. This was a representation, it was a happening in the streets of Cagliari, in the street where there are many shops, the shopping street and there was a person with a portable speaker, from which the music came out very loud, very rhythmic, and then there were four people dressed in silver-colored stage or disco clothes, and these four people moved around doing very beautiful and quite suggestive choreographies, and then every now and then one of the three would take this huge piece of chalk and would draw a line on the ground and all four would place themselves on this line and perform some very particular choreographies. It was a moment of, let's say crazy, instead of going home I turned around, they were going the exact opposite way, but I followed them for quite a while, then I had to go home because I had an appointment. But it was a moment that made me experience the city with different eyes, even after I went away, they continued towards the Largo, towards the port, even while I was returning home, I saw the city with different eyes, maybe because it was so full of people, pandemic? Which pandemic? It is as if it had never happened, it was just ... I must also add that although we are at the beginning of October, the weather is still summerly, so it was really full of people outside: children, balloons, rides, a gentleman who was blowing giant soap bubbles and all chirping children below. In short, a good moment, a good moment that I feel I love my city and all the people who live there. An ecumenical moment of happiness.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [English below]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Today I want to talk to you about a typical Sardinian dog, the Fonnese shepherd [from the village Fonni], and I want to talk about it because a friend on Facebook posted a photo of a flock crossing the road, or rather of a car stopped to allow a flock to cross the road. He is in Provence, in France, and I commented saying, ah it could be a Sardinian road because I often see flocks crossing the roads, especially the country roads, those a little more isolated. And my friend asked me, ah dogs, what kind of dogs do shepherds use in Sardinia? And I took the opportunity to publish a photo, and a few lines of reference to Wikipedia, where they speak precisely of the Fonnese shepherd who is a typical dog of Sardinia, and Facebook censored me, censored the message, didn't allow me to post it saying, that it's against the rules of the Facebook community, and that this is the first warning that if you do another 2 we'll kick you out. Well, now I don't know what is offensive about the Fonnese shepherd but now I want to talk about it because they are very particular dogs. It is a breed that has no genetic affinity with other Italian breeds, and apparently genetic studies have revealed that the origins of this dog date back to dog breeds from Hungary and the Middle East. And these studies have also highlighted that by studying the genetic affinities with other European and African dog breeds, it is even possible to retrace the history of human migration to Sardinia. What does it look like? It is a very beautiful dog, very intelligent, very expressive even if it is a little scary because very territorial, it is very aware of his job as a shepherd dog and is described as courageous, but wary of strangers. Apparently, in Fonni it is known by the name of 'cane'e capiu' that is dog to be tied up, the poor thing I hope they don't. The size is average, the male can reach up to 35 kg and the female up to 30 kg, and what is interesting is that despite having very particular genetic characteristics, the shepherds of Fonni have absolutely no intention of making them become dogs for sale, in fact, I read that a National Geographic researcher asked a shepherd, whether he didn't want them to be studied so that they can be selected as prized breeds. And he answered, excuse me, would you put a member of your family up for sale? I absolutely loved his answer. Anyway, I'll put the link in the notes of the program so you too can look at this beautiful dog, the Fonnese shepherd.

    TESTO TRADOTTO (English translation below)
Sono diventata volontaria di "Be my eyes". Cos'è "Be my eyes"?

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I became a volunteer of "Be my eyes". Yesterday I finally downloaded the app, I had heard about it a while ago, and I finally downloaded it on my mobile. What is "Be my eyes"? It is an app that helps the blind and visually impaired carry out the normal chores that a person normally does around the house. But first, let's say a little about the creator of this fantastic app and how it works. The idea came to Hans Jørgen Wiberg, a Danish who himself is visually impaired, and in 2012 he was already working at the Danish Association for the Blind, and he realised how many blind and visually impaired people used video technologies, so video calls, to get help from friends and family when they needed it. So he created this app which then he launched in January 2015 with a start-up, and today it has more than 4 million volunteers and it works in 180 languages, including Italian. What can you do with this app? Volunteers register and receive a call when a blind or a partially sighted person needs help. Help for what? If this person is at home and needs help finding lost or fallen items, they place the call, the various volunteers all get the call, then the first volunteer who receives the call answers, and the blind or visually impaired person says "I dropped my pen, can you help me find it?" Then by directing the mobile phone, the volunteer guides the visually impaired check until they find the object, or even to have photographs, paintings or even artistic works described: they go to the museum put on the headphones and show the object or the painting, or the sculpture and the volunteer makes a description, but also helps to match or describe the colors, imagine that in the morning you have to dress, you have to choose between a red shirt and a blue shirt, but you are blind or partially sighted so you cannot see the colors, or even to solve simple problems on the computer, but also when shopping, distinguish between different objects. In short, it is a fantastic platform that connects people who want to help with people who need help. There is also a page of "Be my eyes" in Italian, I will put the link in the program notes. The only thing I noticed is that all over the page they talk about the blind as "not-seeing" and you know that this is something that should not be done because the blind should be defined for what they are and not in negative for what they can't do. I dedicated one of my three uncut minutes to it, but oh well in the meantime the page was translated into Italian, beggars can't be choosers. I invite you to take a look because it is truly a fantastic, fascinating and very useful thing.

    Confessioni di una gesticolatrice.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)
Sono una gesticolatrice. Lo so, me ne rendo conto e lo verifico sempre ogni volta che vedo un video che mi ritrae, mentre faccio lezione, mentre parlo. Gesticolo.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I am a gesticulator. I know, I realize it and I have proof every time I see a video that portrays me, while I am teaching, while I speak. I move my hands. I am aware of this and I could avoid gesticulating if I commit myself if I concentrate, and sometimes I try, but honestly, I am not interested in controlling my gesticulation, because it is part of me. Even now that I speak in front of the microphone, alone in a room, alone in the house and alone in the room, there is no one looking at me, but I feel my hands accompanying my words with gestures. The gestures of my hands just like the facial expressions, this too I was able to verify on video, I make a lot of facial expressions, I move my face a lot when I speak, and this is who I am, and therefore why hide it, why pretending I don't? Now, gestures are very important in non-verbal language, and especially hand gestures which have a very strong power. In fact, in theatrical representations, the gesture of showing the palm of the hands to the public has truly incredible strength. Hand gestures, if you remember about twenty years ago, maybe 15 years ago, you started to see people talking on TV, talking heads, holding their hands at chest height. Before nobody did it, before people talked on TV and if they had something in their hand, they held the object, otherwise, they kept the arms along the side and the hands were not even visible. Then suddenly someone realised that to make it look more dynamic and interesting, I don't know, you pick, for talking heads on TV, it became essential to show the elbow and forearm, so keeping the arms at chest height, perhaps a little for the same reason why the various Lilli Gruber, who was a pioneer, a leader, started reading the news sitting crookedly, sideways at the desk, with crazy scoliosis positions that you should never assume. There you go, yes, all this to make appear talking heads on tv more dynamic, more fluid, more lively. In fact, if you notice, in the American TV series everyone always talks while walking and gesticulating with the forearm at chest height. For my part, I continue to talk, make faces and gesticulate as I always have.
