    TESTO TRASCRITTO [ENGLISH TRANSLATION BELOW]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
'Poo in space' is the title of a song by Caparezza. But it was also a very serious problem when in the United States they tried to send humans into space, and in fact, just to solve the hypothetical problem of poo in space, a unit was created specifically designed to solve the problem, or rather to prevent it from showing up. Why? Imagine what could have happened if one of the astronauts in space was hit by a bout of dysentery. We are talking about the first space flight, so there was still no reliable data on the effect of the lack of atmosphere and how the body reacts, and above all how a body reacts to the stress of dysentery. So, it was thus that the HACCP was created, which is the acronym that means Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point, in Italian 'system based on strategic control points for risk analysis'. What is it about? Basically, before, when you checked the food for contamination, you went to sample in what was stored in the various warehouses, so if you found a contaminated sample you had to throw away all the things that were inside the warehouse because there was no way to determine where the contamination had occurred. In 1971, with the creation of this unit which, I repeat, was created to allow astronauts to be sent into space without having to worry about dysentery, the approach was changed, so that they didn't spot-check what was stored in the warehouses, but instead they checked the supply chain, that is the entire food chain, at every stage of the supply chain, checks were made so that if in the end a food was contaminated, they knew exactly where the contamination had occurred. This approach was immediately adopted throughout the United States, then also in Europe in the 1990s. In Italy it was only adopted by law in 2006, it seems a bit late to me, but better late than never. The adoption of this approach has significantly decreased the cases of infection due to food poisoning. Today, most food poisoning is due to the fact that people store food badly at home, contaminate it, do not wash their hands, especially with salmonellae. So, needless to repeat it but I repeat it: wash your hands, wash them more often and try not to contaminate the food you cook.

Enigmistica [weekly magazine with puzzles]. I'm not 100% sure though, because reviewing the titles of my three uncut minutes done so far, and they are many, this is the 236th, I realised that I have a habit of repeating myself: I discovered that I did well two episodes where I talk about my love for Willy Coyote and that there are several episodes with the same title, although being about different things. In short, I should perhaps make a list with the title of my three minutes and a sentence that explains the content, so that when something new comes to mind, I can immediately get feedback and know if I have already talked about it or not. Anyway, I vaguely remembered having already talked about my love for crosswords, actually for the Settimana Enigmistica, to be precise, but I have not found any episode that was entirely dedicated to it, so let's dedicate this to it. I love the Settimana Enigmistica my dad bought it religiously every week and he taught me to do crossword puzzles, he taught me to write inside the square without going over the number, because otherwise you won't read the number anymore, he taught me how to do rebus and all the other games that are on the Sphinx Page section. I don't buy the Settimana Enigmistica every week but in the summer I often buy it, also because I like to do it at the beach, sometimes even at home, we sit at the table, with the family, I read the definitions aloud then we all have a go, we participate in the resolution of the various crosswords. Usually when I buy crosswords, the first thing I do is the rebus, and then all the other games, such as initial discards, consonant changes. I don't like doing anagram-rebus, I've never liked them, I don't know why, well, actually I do: because I don't like anagrams, among all the games with words, anagrams are the only ones that just don't... I don't like them, I don't know why, I don't like them, even though I'm actually quite good at playing Scrabble, translated in Italian as Scarabeo [scarab beettle] for reasons boh! unknown, but with Scrabble is more technique than the ability to make anagrams. I always do the encrypted crosswords, I always do them, I am also very good at solving them, I have never left them half finished, and I never look at the solutions: I always try to solve them, then if I cannot solve something, I leave things half finished, I don't like looking for the solutions.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 236 House sitting

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I swear, I forget that in Italy there is this relationship with the house which is like a secret place, certainly not the place where you let strangers, unknown people, enter. I remember it every time it comes time to go on vacation, when (as I always do) I look for friends to do house sitting, that is, to stay inside my house while I'm not there. I always do it, I do it even more now that I have two cats, so I like to think that not only is there someone who comes twice a day to feed my cats, but that there is really someone living here, inside the house. Every time the search for the person who will stay at home begins, I realise that it is not such a widespread thing here in Italy, and in fact often people do not understand, they ask me if I am going to pay someone. No, it's not about paying someone, let me explain: I usually make my house available to friends who live in non-independent situations, often in fact they are former students of mine, therefore quite young people who still live with their parents and who are very happy to have, for a certain period of time, a house of their own, an independent house that is also a modern house, with its comforts, in the city, full of books, in short, a house that is also quite comfortable to live in. Yes, so it is usually an exchange, let's say fair, because I have someone at home who feeds and cuddles the kittens, and the people who come to stay here have their own independent house. But I am often told, but how do you let a person into your home, just like this...? Well, I do not have this protective relationship towards my home, on the contrary - on the contrary - I am happy to share it and I am sorry that this mode of house sitting is not practiced here. When I lived in Melbourne, sometimes even friends who had their own home, who, however, maybe lived on the opposite side of the city and liked to take a little vacation in their city, because especially in big cities like Melbourne, when you live on the other side of town, it is really like staying in a completely different place, and so they explained to me, I stay in a different house, different books, different habits, the shops are different, it's like taking a vacation, maybe I don't have the money to take my holidays and so that's my fix, I am a tourist in my city. So I urge you: don't be so protective of your homes, share them.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 235 Anna J.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (ENGLISH translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Anna is one of those people who amazes you. She amazed me when I met her in Melbourne, she was one of the first people I met in Melbourne, she was the director of the film where my then boyfriend worked. A director, she was originally Canadian but she had brought her career to Melbourne, also having quite a bit of success, in fact her feature film had already won several international competitions. When I met Anna she was working on a commercial, we became friends immediately because Anna has a wicked sense of humour, and we saw each other very often, we did silly things together, like going camping in the Australian bush, that is in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the forests where there was absolutely nothing, nothing urban, and we carried with us, in addition to the tents, the stoves and everything we needed for camping, we brought evening gowns, and then we created these tableau vivants, where we posed pretending to be the ladies having tea at five in the afternoon, then there was always at some point, there was an escalation, what started as a ceremony where you drank tea then ended with fake horror pictures, I remember once we took carrots, placing them on a cutting board pretending to have cut our fingers and then we sprinkled everything with ketchup, in short, we used to have fun like this. What did Anna do? After a truly brilliant career, everyone was talking about her as the new Australian director, one day she went on a trip and found herself in the middle of deepest Australia, in the desert, away from any urban centre, she went to a pub - this so how she tells it - she got drunk and the next day she found out that she bought a house there and sold a house in Melbourne, and she moved there, and now she has been living in this center of Western Australia for several years, it's called Meekatharra, population of about 700 inhabitants, Anna still writes, her funny and witty books. I don't know what it was like to change from a completely metropolitan life in the Melbourne jet set to this absolutely rural, warm place, within a tight, tight, tight community, because when you're only seven hundred you know everyone. I would love to go and visit her, of course the travel restrictions do not allow it, but Anna sooner or later I come to visit you because the things I read that you publish are really beautiful.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (ENGLISH TRANSLATION below)
Io a leggere queste cose qua, mi vengono i brividi!

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
While I was going to the greengrocer I found a book, yes I literally found it on the edge of a windowsill, it was put together with other books, obviously those who had them at home did not want to throw them away, it didn't seem appropriate, but did not know what to do with them either. And one of those caught my attention because it had a very old cover, I can't resist the charm of old things, so I picked it up and it's an old school book from the sixties, now I haven't exactly looked at it, what year it is, I have it in my hand now, I look at it with you, it is from 1964 and it is titled "Guide to female technical applications". Now I remember very well when I was a child, the fascination these books had on me when I found one at home, they were full of activities for the girls. It is a book for the sixth grade, I did the calculation so an 11 year old girl, this little girl was given the book and she had to use it at school to learn 'domestic activities'. I just want to read the first three lines opening this book: "You who read me are no longer a child: your dreams are now reaching out towards a future as a woman, already in you body and soul acquire new characteristics, truly feminine." When I read these things here, it gives me chills! And inside the book it is full of 'activities', such as lining a bottle with small pieces of cloth, how to make small picture frames, how to fix the iron cable when it breaks, how to make simple items of clothing, aprons, skirts, how to take the measures, how to recognize vegetables when they are bad, how to load the sewing machine, up to 'organizing a visit to a company', in short, truly a high-tech manual for eleven-year-old girls who would later become the women of the future, because we know that behind every man who works in the office, who does hard work, there is always a woman who keeps the house clean, and above all the iron cable always in order, and buys good vegetables and fruit for the family to keep them healthy, so that they become participants in society. Yes, this book arouses in me a mixture of nostalgia, anger, irony, I'm not completely sure myself. But at least it makes me understand that we have improved a little bit, at least on surface.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I'm not a music lover, I like music of course but I don't follow a particular genre and I also have terribly eclectic tastes. If someone were to ask me point blank: so, tell me a couple of songs you like, the first ones that come to mind are 'Fiamme negli occhi' [flames in the eyes] by Coma_Things from the last Sanremo and then a song, a piece of music that I really like and which I listen to sometimes three four five times in a row, Bach's 'Goldberg Variations', those played by Glenn Gould. So I'm not a music enthusiast but I would really miss not being able to hear the music, and doing these reflections I was reminded of a video I saw several years ago, in which you could see a woman who at an Eminem concert was interpreting for the deaf, you know sign language, and it's a video that went viral precisely because of the incredible charge of vitality, energy and enthusiasm that this woman put into signing for the deaf. I went to her up before turning on the mic, and I found her again and actually I saw among other things that this woman, this interpreter for the deaf, has become famous for her energy charge. She is Holly Maniatty, I put the link to the video in the program notes, and I reflected on the fact that it shouldn't be so strange to think that a sign interpreter is able to pass the meaning and the content beyond the simple translation of the words of the lyrics when talking about a piece of music by a rapper, like Eminem, because if you visualize the rappers for a moment, they also use their hands and body a lot, they move while they sing, and the movements they make with the body are an integral part of the lyrics of the song, so it shouldn't be such a strange thing, yet it was a strange thing, I repeat it even went viral, and then many other examples followed, because once you talk about a topic you realise that more and more people do it, and I also found an Italian who does exactly that, who interprets songs for the deaf, is name is Mauro Iandolo and he is the son of deaf-signing parents, so he tells in an interview that he grew up translating songs into sign language for his parents, and then I discovered that there is also a school that teaches music courses to deaf and hearing children using sign language, because the sign language as well as translating for the deaf makes hearing children enjoy even more music while using it, as they let themselves go and are happier.

Like many people of my age, I too grew up watching cartoons on Sunday afternoons. Among the many cartoons that I watched, there was one that has always fascinated and thrilled me, it was the one with Wile Coyote and The Road Runner, Bip-Bip in Italian. It struck me and fascinated me and still fascinates me for its unreality, and of course I too, like all the people who have ever seen that cartoon, I was already wondering as a child, but why doesn't the coyote - when he writes to Acme to buy things - instead of ordering contraptions in the illusory attempt to capture the bird, why doesn't he order food instead? Or also, why doe the bird continues to stay there, why doesn't it go somewhere else, and gets out of the way? These questions have continued to engage my mind also because Wile Coyote's cartoons have something mystical, something that induces meditation, perhaps certainly the lack of dialogue, also because of the landscapes that are a very characteristic feature, strong, very present in the narrative. And the story of Wile Coyote and The Road Runner struck me so much that several years ago I decided to talk about it in a little story, I decided to create a little story, a podcast, that I called I Love You Wile, and I imagined what the story behind these two characters could be. In some ways, their relationship reminded me of some dynamics that can be found in dangerous relationships between two people, toxic ones, those of two people who hurt each other and who, however, cannot break away and continue to be together, and therefore I have imagined: what if they were not a running ostrich and a coyote but if these were two characters who represent two lovers who cannot break away and continue to be together and who have found a perverse game to stay close to each other, going against all rules of respect, the rules that are then those of loving each other, of love, finding their way of being together? This is what I talk about in the small podcast called "I Love You Wile", which I recently remastered with new music, and of course I invite you to listen to it - link in the program notes.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 231 Arredi urbani (Eser. #2)

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

Urban fragments, the small objects that narrate the city. This is the title of Vittorio Magnano Lampugnani's book and it is a guide to urban wandering. It is a book that talks about one of my passions, that is the city in all its most fragmentary aspects, the little pills that I, in one way or another, continue to explore also in my audio podcast productions. In this book by Vittorio Magnano Lampugnani, a book that I still do not have, I have only read the review but I am going to buy it as soon as possible, I'll go to the bookstore to buy it, in this book he offers a review of fragments of what are the furnishings of the cities, and he divides them into three categories: micro-architectures, i.e. kiosks, public toilets, public transport stops, subway entrances, but also telephone booths; then he catalogs those that are real objects, think of fountains, monuments, the benches where you sit, street lamps, but also traffic lights to end up with the house numbers that are affixed on the entrance to the side of the doors; and then the third category is that of furnishings, elements of furniture, i.e. floors, manholes (if you have ever noticed, the manholes sometimes have real designs, real arabesques, very intricacies, especially the ancient ones) to then include pavements and fences. So it is a book that talks about the city, about the elements that compose it with an eye for detail and particulars. This is also my favorite way of navigating the city. Sometimes I take the streets, the paths that I always take, for example the one that takes me from my home to the market, which I walk very often, but then I fix my gaze towards the upper floors of the buildings, and in doing so I discover new things, in that street that I walk many times a week, I always discover new details that I had never noticed before, perhaps a balcony that has particular flowers, or a different color, a building. Here is an urban exercise that I suggest you do: the next time you take a route that you do often, focus your gaze at a height that is different from where you normally have your gaze while walking. I assure you, you will discover things never seen before.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 230 TV anni '70

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
A TV studio so good as empty, two chairs, one of these is a wooden chair with a carved back, a cuckoo clock on one wall, in front of the two chairs a large aquarium with fish in it. From a door enters the presenter, holding some sheets, he ignores the other person, who is sitting in the chair with the carved back, goes towards the aquarium, raises a lid of the aquarium and gives some food to the fish by taking it from a small bowl that is placed on the upper part, on the lid of the aquarium, and then goes to sit down, leafing through the sheets, turns to the guest, a man dressed in an elegant suit, raven black hair, cigarette in hand, smoking, and starts asking him questions. This is how it starts, thus began a witty, crackling exchange, full of quotations, words in French, references, cross-references. These are the first moments of Maurizio Costanzo's interview with Carmelo Bene. I stumbled upon it in one of the newsletters I receive in the morning, to remind me, and everyone, what TV in general, and public TV in particular, was in the position to be, could be in Italy in 1979. One hour of conversation that today would be reserved for the more specialized channels of specialized pay cable television, which instead was fed to the public at night in the late evening of public TV, before there were private TV channels. It was 1979. I remember it well. The program was called 'Acquario' was conducted by Maurizio Costanzo, by a fantastic Maurizio Costanzo, I remember even before 'Acquario' the program 'Bontà loro' [out of the kindness of their hearts], the first talk show on Italian TV, and I remember that I was a child, I was really very young, but I stayed up late because I wanted to see Maurizio Costanzo's 'Bontà loro' I didn't understand a thing but I was struck by the stature of the journalist.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)
Avete presente no?

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
There is an artistic genre that I particularly like, it is the meta story, the meta work of art, i.e. the story, the book, the artwork or even the video game that are inside another book, another work of art or another video game. Think of 'If on a winter's night a traveller' by Italo Calvino, which is a book that contains dozens of other books where a story develops, or I also think of 'The beginner's guide' the videogame by Davey Wreden the author of 'The Stanley parable' that if you are familiar with the stories I tell in my podcast 3 uncut, I think I have also dedicated an episode to it, because it is a video game that transcends the story and also transcends the relationship between narrator and player. Wandering through the newsletters that I receive every morning, I got one that talks about yet another meta story, and this time we are talking about Netflix. It must have happened to you, to watch something on TV and in this something they talk about another TV series, which is therefore a TV series within the TV series. Someone has decided to collect all these fake TV series, which do not exist except in the fiction of the TV series, and to organize them as TV programs and dramas are organized within the Netflix site. You know, don't you? All the squares, you click on one square and the program tab opens and then you can watch the program. It is exactly like that, it has exactly the same design, the only difference is that when you click on the square that tells you about the program, the real program does not open to you, you cannot watch it because, I repeat, it is a fictional program, but there is a small summary, a synopsis that tells you what it's about and what real program it appears in. I opened a couple that caught my attention, one of them is 'Fast animals slow children', each episode being a very interesting chase: the animals are very fast and the children are very slow, of course it appears on 'Family guy 'which is a cartoon series created by Seth MacFarlane, in Italian I think it's called the Griffins, it's very sarcastic.
