  • 3' grezzi Ep. 208 Se l'eroe risponde

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)
I am over the Moon.

    ENGLISH TRANSATION
I've always had a craze for writing to my heroes since I was a child. I remember that after the release of Angelo Branduardi's album La Pulce d’Acqua I wrote him a very long letter in which I told how much I liked his music, he never wrote back. I also wrote a very long letter to Mister Fantasy, Carlo Massarini whom I liked very much, and he never answered me either. Later I worked with Angelo Branduardi, but I never told him that I had written him a letter when I was a child. Carlo Massarini instead I sent him to say that I wrote him a letter through a mutual friend (I have not yet received an answer). Less interesting was the meeting with Dacia Maraini who was one of my heroines. Then I had the opportunity to meet her, to talk to her, to spend time with her, let's say that the image I had from her books did not match the real person, so that was a bit of a disappointment. My heroes now are podcasters, those who make the podcasts I like and listen to. This introduction is to say that when I like someone, when I like what others do, I usually communicate it, I like to share appreciation for the works of others, and so I recently did with one of my favorite podcasters, precisely for one episode that I particularly liked (even though I've been listening for many years), after that last episode I wrote him a message saying I really like your podcast, I've been following for a long time, and if you ever feel like doing something in Italian, tell me I'm in. Well, and the podcaster took me by my word and we are collaborating on a project together, I can't tell you more, just that it's a great feeling to work with people you admire and also to be recognized as someone worth collaborating with I still, I have told you several times, I suffer from the impostor syndrome, despite the things I do are of unquestionable quality, but you know it how it is, how things go, that in a way is not nice to show off what you do, anyway, yes the things I do are fine. Yes, I am still surprised that the people I admire professionally consider me an equal. Beautiful, in the last week I collaborated with this podcaster for a great project that when it is published you will be the first to know, meanwhile suffice to know that he is one of my heroes and I am super happy I am over the Moon.

Molto divertente.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Anyone who has listened to episode 185 will know that we brought home a kitten we named Sputnik. Our matron, Mazinga, already reigned at home. Well I have updates. So the introduction of Sputnik seems to have happened correctly, in fact they haven't killed each other yet, on the contrary they even play every now and then, but what happened? Well, I did not know that kittens often have mites in their ears, so the kitten has infected Mazinga with mites. We realized that there was something wrong with Mazinga and took her to the vet, and that's where all happened. The vet told us that Mazinga is overweight. We already suspected as much, six and a half Kg is too much, not only that, but Mazinga is a cat with very long hair and therefore tends to get what I call dreadlocks, I brush her several times a day but there are places where she does not allow me to brush, especially in the intimate region. Now, everyone knows that cats are very clean animals, being overweight prevents Mazinga from cleaning herself properly after she has done her business and the vet told us that we have to give Mazinga a bidet at least until she doesn't loses enough weight to be able to do it on her own, and so we did. I had already had similar experiences of cat washing that had left me quite distressed, but I had learnt some things, so I immediately put on a long-sleeved shirt despite the 40 degrees in the shade and... yes, we got together and we tried to give this blessed bidet to Mazinga who... we managed to wash her but I leave you to imagine what happened. So, the situation now is this, Mazinga needs our help to get a bidet until she loses weight, she has been put on a diet, now we really have to measure her food, no more unscheduled snacks and yes, it just occurred to me that I saw somewhere wet wipes to help animals after the toilette, I am buying those without a doubt because we certainly cannot go on like this. I will keep you informed on upcoming future developments. You think of me having to give a bidet to Mazinga the cat who has to lose weight.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Think about it: when was the last time you used a phone booth to make a phone call? It's not easy, I asked myself today and I can't remember, probably among my listeners, the younger ones, there will be people who have never used a telephone booth. I think, for example, of my son who has just turned 18: as far as I know, he has never used a phone booth, and if I were to tell him now, go and use a phone booth, oh well he would work out how it works eventually, but maybe he wouldn't know what kind of coins they take. If you ask me what coins phone booths take, boh! They certainly take one-euro pieces but I don't know for example if they take the 50-cent pieces, if they take the 2-euro pieces. I don't even know if there are normal telephone booths around, equipped to take credit cards. I have seen them in airports around the world, oh, BTW, just occurred to me: back then, as soon as I arrived at the airport of my destination, the first thing I did was to look for the telephone booths to call home to say that I had arrived safe and sound. Now you don't need that anymore, because even when you go to foreign countries where there is roaming, that is, you pay to make phone calls, now you go to the wireless Internet network, I personally use Skype to make phone calls, so making phone calls through Internet and not the telephone network. Another thing that came to my mind is that I no longer know how long a phone call lasts in the telephone boxes. Centuries ago, when I used the booths all the time, I remember that the calls were timed, that is when you made a local call, within Cagliari in my case, with a token (then with 100, 200 lire coins, I don’t remember exactly), I could talk between 6 and 8 minutes, so after that time I had to put more money, then at a certain point they introduced not-timed local calls so that we could talk infinitely, or maybe it was the other way around, that first we talked infinitely, and then they introduced timed calls. Anyway, well there is very little time left in these 3 uncut minutes. I want to leave you with an exercise: today make a phone call from a phone booth, and don't carry your cell phone, write the phone number on a piece of paper, and above all make an important call, not just to use the phone, not just to use the phone booth, but a phone call that you have to make, in the office, to a family member or a friend. Use a phone booth. Let me know how it goes.

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)
Inaccettabile, inaccettabile.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Today I started in the day by listening to yet another off-air by a journalist who expressed himself in an unrepeatable way towards the women who work at the Olympics supporting the journalist teams with logistics. Yesterday I listened to yet another journalist's off-air asking for passwords to access various systems I don't know on which computer, asking for passwords, repeating passwords that were given to him in the headphones out loud, complaining about the fact that there were capital letters, other signs and so on and then asking, but why didn't you call them just goofy, pluto and mickey mouse all in lowercase? you know, this isn't NASA! Oh well. I thought about the waste of all those courses in which they teach the importance of choosing passwords that are truly safe, because even the ones we put on unimportant sites can be used against us, and then you are in the workplace, you are using work computers and you are connected to an international network, these are systems that must be protected, and if you journalist working there haven't understood this, you shouldn't be working there as a journalist. This morning off-air was much darker, because precisely this journalist was talking to other people who were there with him in the studio and yes, he expressed himself in an unrepeatable way towards female working there. When I hear these things a lot of thoughts come to my mind, all very bad. The first is: but taught him how to behave? What family did he grow up in? How has he been taught to expressing himself towards others, in general, and women in particular? Then I anticipated the apologetic comments by the good Italian people: oh well it's not his fault, he didn't realise that the microphone was on. That’s not the problem, the problem is not that he didn’t realise that the microphone is on (although even on this, we should ponder on the degree of professionalism of these people), no, the issue is that you shouldn't talk like that. Period. You shouldn't even think like that, we can't live in a society that considers women simply for their reproductive organ. This is unacceptable and I dare not to think how these people behave towards their colleagues. Unacceptable, unacceptable.

    TESTO TRADOTTO (English translation below)
Povera bestiuola. Comunque, vabbè. Piccole storie da veterinario.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
There is something that unites all the people who go to the vet, those who meet in the waiting room. All the people who go to the vet love animals, otherwise they wouldn't spend all that money to get their little friends treated. At least that's how it should be. I remember once when I was in Melbourne we had just taken our kitten Ombra (shadow) (she now runs carefree with poodle Tappy in the garden of the Johnson family, our friends in Melbourne), yes so, we took Ombra to the vet, I don't remember why. Ombra was a small, white kitten, completely white. We were there in the waiting room, we still didn't have a pet carrier because we have had Ombra only for a few days, but then Ombra was really tiny so she fitted in one hand. I know, you should always have the carrier but I was there with my little son and Ombra in my hands waiting for my turn to go to the vet. At one point a lady comes in with a greyhound, you know those beautiful, very elegant, super nervous, super jittery racing dogs. This lady looked like the villain of the Aristocats, she really looked like she came out of a Walt Disney cartoon, she had the face of an evil woman. And sure enough, she enters, all bejeweled and full of rings, and the first thing she says upon noticing me and Ombra is, eh no you must go out! And we like, what? Why should we? No, because my dog is used to chasing rabbits and so he might take your cat for a rabbit and want to chase it. We start laughing, you’re not for real, we’ll never get out, you go out if you want, oh well. The lady gets, very angry, into a corner, keeping the collar on this poor greyhound very tight. What happens in the following minutes? A whole family enters, dad and three, four children with a huge box, and inside the box there was a white, very fluffy, very hairy rabbit. Romeo, my son, and I, we look at each other and burst out laughing. This gentleman with all these children around were worried I don't know what was the matter with the rabbit, and this lady you could see her going on a rampage and mumbling to herself, you cannot, you shouldn’t, blah blah blah, and nothing, she takes the dog and goes to wait outside, she and her poor greyhound who, in my opinion, never even received a caress, in my opinion she really kept it just to make it run in races. Poor dog. Anyway, oh well. Little vet stories.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)
Buona lettura.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Yesterday I treated myself: I bought Wired, the magazine. Well, it is a big deal, because first of all I found it at the 4th newsagent, then oh well, it is an immense pleasure to have a paper magazine in your hands, but let's proceed in order. Yes, because here in the delightful city of pink flamingos it's not like, you can go to the first newsagent and ask, I would like this and that, I realized it when I tried in vain to buy The New Yorker Books Review, I looked for it everywhere, I know, it is an English magazine and therefore I realise that not all newsagents carry it, but I tried to order it with newsagents, I even spoke to a friend of mine whose job is getting newspapers to Sardinia, and he assured me that no one in Sardinia receives it, period, and that there is no possibility of receiving it, the only possibility that I would have had to receive it is to make a subscription that beside costing an arm and a leg, then good luck with finding it in the letterbox because there is also the fact that things get stolen, especially if they are hard to find, when they are delivered by post. Oh well. Yesterday, after a tour of several newsagents I finally found Wired, Wired which is a magazine that I like very much, I had been buying it since the beginning, from the first issue, indeed I'm sorry not to have kept that first issue, but oh well, you understand that with all the intercontinental moves that I made, you have to take tough decisions in life, and sometimes these are painful choices like, what can I afford spending money to ship to the other side of the world? Wired's first issue evidently didn't fit that order. No, it is an immense pleasure I feel in picking up a magazine, especially on days when I am freer from commitments, and read it all from cover to cover. I really like the graphics, I really like it. This issue, by the way, is about about the internet, about fake news, about how it is not enough to have real data to make people understand what is the truth, there are other mechanisms that come into play. Incredibly interesting, beautiful graphics, then there are short stories. I love it and I spent a beautiful day yesterday, I haven't finished the whole magazine, today I will dedicate myself to reading something more, if I find a cool corner in the house, I don't like using air conditioning so I prefer to create drafts and wait for it then SBANG! doors and windows slam and a disaster happens. Anyway I recommend it: Wired on newsstands, if you find it. Enjoy the reading.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
When I lived in Berlin I had a friend, whose name, alas, I don't remember, but I do remember that she lived, I think it was called Bismarck Strasse, a very wide street, very important, in the Charlottenburg district. I remember that we went to her small apartment because if we looked out the window in a certain way, leaning out with binoculars in hand, we could see at the end of the street a building where apparently lived Wim Wenders. I have always loved Wim Wenders, he has always been one of my favorite directors, let's say up to and excluding Paris Texas. Yes I like films that are usually considered boring from Paris Texas onwards Wim Wenders began his American period, in fact when I went to my friend's house to spy on Wim Wenders' balcony, I bet that he had already moved to America, almost certainly. I especially like his first films, like The State of Things, it is one of my favorite films ever, I have not seen it, I have not seen it for many years, but the whole film is a very long wait, waiting that something happens that does not happen, therefore it is the story of the passage of time. And I have always liked him for his ability to tell the time that passes in a way, however, some might say boring, for me instead he was full of meaning. And The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Penalty, Die Angst des Tormanns beim Elfmeter, a film that is an adaptation of a story by Peter Handke, the title already says it all: another wait, that of the goalkeeper waiting for the penalty. Falsche Bewegung, The Wrong Move, fantastic film based all on having glimpsed a beautiful stranger on a train passing in the opposite direction to the one in which the protagonist of the film is travelling. And then, of course, Wings of Desire, Der Himmel Uber Berlin, perhaps one of my favorite films ever, along with some other classic German filmography. Why am I talking about Wim Wenders? I don't know, Wim Wenders came to my mind for some reason and I got a great desire to put myself in the dim light after lunch looking for a Wim Wenders movie and be carried away by the vision of the storytelling of the passing of time. Maybe I will.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 201 Gioco = Lavoro

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)
Ecco, questo suo gioco "As if you were doing work", è come se stessi lavorando, è esattamente così.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Imagine a video game that shows you the bloody Windows screens when a lot of pop-ups open, emails, notifications, etc. arrive. That's what Pippin Barr, whom I consider a philosopher rather than a game creator, did. He started by considering how the technology we use to work, increasingly tries to resemble video games to make our work more enjoyable, and he does exactly the opposite, takes the games and makes them look more like work, the same tasks that, as often happens in life, we perform without even realizing why we are doing them, like when the computer asks us to do things that we do not know why it is asking us, but we must perform them if we want to proceed with the our job, otherwise it won’t allow us to proceed, I think about all the system updates and things like that. Well, in his game "It is as if you were doing work", it is exactly like that. A screen opens, in the style of the Windows 2000 computer, and the computer then asks you to do things, but you get continually interrupted and you will never be able to complete the required tasks, so you spend all the time in the game arguing with the computer interface. Pippin Barr makes these games very funny, very ironic. Another one he created is the one, there is an entire series dedicated to the myths of ancient Greece, there is this game which is called Sisyphus, and consists of this gentleman, Sisyphus, pushing a gigantic boulder over the mountain and when he gets to the top of the mountain, boom! it rolls down and then he can start infinitely again. Another very interesting game is the one that refers to the happening done by Marina Abramovic at MOMA, very famous: the artist Marina Abramovic stayed I don't remember how many days at MOMA, 8, 9 hours every day, sitting at a table while people stood in line to be allowed to look deeply into her eyes. Well, Pippin Barr's game proposes this again but it’s about queueing to enter MOMA and we cannot get distracted because every now and then the game asks us to do things, like take a step forward, and if we do not obey we lose our place in line and we have to start again. There is a beautiful interview with Pippin Barr in the unmissable “We Make Money Not Art” newsletter by Regine Debatty, I will put the link in the program’s notes, and among other things, Pippin Barr talks about one of my favorite video games ever, let's say my second favourite after The Stanley Parable, he speaks about Paper Please, which is a game where you pretend to be a border officer in an Eastern European country and you put stamps on people’s papers when they ask to enter or exit or to cross the border. Of this too I will put the link in the notes of the program.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English below)
Buona duecentesima puntata!

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
200 days ago on January 4th 2021 I started this adventure of my three uncut minutes. Adventure started because I wanted to test myself, I wanted to see if I could turn on the microphone and speak without preparing my canonical texts, because I usually write everything when I do podcasts, even the breaths I take, the way I speak, the music, the sounds, and then I clean up the audio, I try to clean it up to the best of my technical skills, which are very limited. However, on January 4th, a cold winter morning, Cagliari in the red zone, lockdown, you couldn't go out, you couldn't do anything, I started this adventure. I listened again to episode number one on Jan 4th and I realised that even while recording, I still hadn't even decided what to call this podcast, and I was even thinking about doing it for five minutes. Can you believe it? It already takes me a lifetime to do these three minutes, five minutes will have taken the whole day, I'll explain why. It is true that I turn on the microphone and speak for three minutes without text, so it takes me exactly three minutes to record those three minutes. What you don't know is that behind the scenes I take a lot of time to process these three minutes of mine, because okay, I publish them on Spreaker, and even this doesn't take long, but then I had the idea of doing the transcription of the text, so that the text has more visibility, but also so that people can read the text, the transcription takes a little time, the transcribed text then I translate it into English because I thought I would also want my three raw minutes to be enjoyed by the friends that I have around the world who do not speak Italian and who sometimes tell me, Cristina I would like to listen to your daily podcast, but I don't speak Italian, how can I? Here, the translation doesn’t take too long, what takes long are all the steps I have to do to then transform the translation of a text in Word into a subtitling. So, I have to create a kind of video, and on the video put my voice, in correspondence with the words, I have to put the sentences written in English. So if to record my three minutes takes me exactly three minutes, to upload an episode of my podcast in Italian and English with subtitles it takes me almost two hours, almost two hours a day, which if I think about it I feel like crying, but how have I come this far? Yet I do it willingly. Because I always get new messages from people I didn't know and who have started listening to me in different languages. Nothing, they make me happy. Happy 200th episode!

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (ENGLISH TRANSLATION below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
It happened again yesterday. It hadn't happened to me at these enormous, gigantic levels for quite some time. Yesterday I got lost again, I got lost again while driving a road that I have done so many times. Yesterday afternoon I went to pick up my mom who had to go to a place where I accompanied her many times, but every time I accompanied her I first went to pick her up at her house and then from her house we drove there. This time she went there by other means and I just went to pick her up, it was about 2:15pm but of course, instead of leaving from her house, I left from my house. And what happened? That when I arrived at a very infamous roundabout coming from another entrance, so I was used to entering the roundabout coming from my mother's house and knowing exactly the exit I had to take, well, even if I had already gone that road about forty times so I should have known it very well, when I found myself in the middle of the roundabout coming from another direction, I panicked, in the sense that I became very unsure of the road to take and what torments me, I am very afraid of roundabouts because there is no time to think, it’s not that I can stop for a moment and say OK, which road? You have to take an exit, because you cannot stop in the middle of the roundabout. Of course, I took the wrong exit, I realised it so I went back into the roundabout and took another exit that was even worse, because while the first wrong exit still allowed me to make a U-turn and get back to the roundabout, the second wrong exit put me on a high-flow road, in Sardinia we have no highways but we have motorways where you cannot change direction and where for quite a few kilometers there was no possibility to make a U-turn, and there was no way of turning, I couldn't go anywhere. In the end I finally managed to turn, to make a right turn, I stopped as soon as there was a rest area near a shopping center and there I called my saviour at home, and from home, I woke him from his afternoon nap, and with my mobile on speakerphone, he guided me from there until I was able to reach the destination of my trip. At that point I was covered in sweat because I had to go with the windows closed and I did not want to open the air conditioning because of the noise. Oh well I got away with it.
