  • 3' grezzi EP. 198 Heidi

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
When I was little, among the many cartoons that I watched at lunchtime when I returned from school there was Heidi. Heidi who was a Japanese anime, so the Heidi I know is not the one from the book but that little girl drawn as an anime with big big eyes, big short black hair who lives in the mountains and so on. who lives in the mountains and so on. When I was a child I saw Heidi as the heroine, she was the one who did things well, so I identified with her campaigns, her actions, I was almost saying 'campaigns' because sometimes they were real war campaigns, like the one undertaken against Miss Rottermeier. For my generation Miss Rottermeier was a symbol of wickedness and cruelty, I truly remembered her as a horrible person. Well, I watched again Heidi with my son, when my son was little, now he's 18 so I'm talking about quite a few years ago, and I realized that my sympathies have absolutely changed and that things that as a child I thought Heidi was well in her right to do, as an adult they made my blood boil because this poor Miss Rottermeier was one who worked there and let's say she was the only healthy one in that house, in that family, the only person who was really doing the right thing. I'll just give you an example: when Miss Rottermeier says, Heidi, this is your little room, please don't bring pets to the house, and there are a number of reasons why you can't bring pets like that into a house, because when there are animals in a house you have to take care of them, and guess what does Heidi do? She goes on the street, she finds a litter of cats, like a dozen, puts them in a box and takes them all home. What an incredible thing to do! I could slap her! Chaff, chaff! Another example: there is the farm next to that of her grandfather who has a baby goat, Snow Flake, and these people here, they are farmers, they live there with the animals, and therefore they raise the animals to sell them at the market. No, Heidi gets it into her head that the goat needs to be rescued and she takes away their means of support, that is, the goat, steals it from the family so they won't put it up for sale. In short, an ongoing circus! Here are just some of the examples of Heidi's behaviors that as a child seemed not only plausible but desirable, and that today really make me angry, make me say oh! Heidi control yourself! That's not how the way to behave in the world! You want to be respected but also respect others, and above all respect the work of others. I turned into Miss Rottermeier!

TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation will follow soon, below)
Buone notizie.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Technology goes faster than legislation. We hear it repeated over and over again. What does it mean? It means that between lawmakers realising that there is a new technology that could have an impact on people's lives, there is always a gap. The last example that comes to mind are the electric scooters that are now in many Italian cities, but there is still no uniform legislation throughout Italy stating how these can be used, who can use them, what are the margins of responsibility of the people who use them etc. Here now I give you excellent news because for the first time I have read about a place, a nation where the problem of a technology arises actually before this technology is widespread on the territory. I'm talking about Chile, where in these days they are discussing the new constitution that should replace the one from the 80s, dating back to the Pinochet dictatorship and the new government of Chile is quite left-oriented, well but I am going OT, I want to talk about the fact that among the articles of the constitution they also want to have one that protects mental integrity, that is, protect the neuro-rights of citizens. What does it mean? It means that they want to regulate those technologies that are still under development, therefore not yet widespread, which could increase or decrease or could disturb the mental integrity of people without their consent. This is not science fiction, there are already such tools that are used, for example, to alleviate the effects of Parkinson's. And yet not all applications are so altruistic, in fact there already exist what we can call 'smart caps', kind of intelligent caps that are used to monitor the movement of brain waves and therefore to measure fatigue, officially used for, can be used to prevent work accidents, but if we think about it, they could also be used to control the pace at which people work, and therefore possibly also to act on productivity: you are not producing enough, so I pay you less. So, I said that it gives us hope that a nation, Chile, thinks about problems before they arise. Then one last thing: the United Nations was asked to create an international commission of experts to work precisely on neuro-rights to create an international treaty. Good news.

Mi è appena successa una cosa inspiegabile.

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)
Ho pensato, ah ecco, che bello me lo metto, ce n'è solo uno però so dove l'altro, perchè l'avevo visto qualche giorno fa.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
First of all, I believe in the rules of physics and I don't believe in supernatural things, at least not until I see it happening around me. Yet there are things that happen that I can't explain to myself, and one of these just happened a little while ago. I have a cardboard box, from IKEA, divided into compartments, where I keep my earrings, my things etcetera, nothing special, I don't like having precious things, it’s mostly costume jewelry, and inside these compartments sometimes I also have small fabric bags, small bags where I keep earrings, for example. Here, in one of these transparent gauze bags I saw that there was an earring with a bead, an earring with a teardrop bead, very very normal ones. I thought, ah there you go, how nice, I'm going to wear it, there is only one but I know where is the other one, because I have seen it a few days ago. So, imagine the scene: the cardboard box resting on my bed, I take the fabric bag in one hand and with one finger I pull out the pearl drop earring, this pearl drop earring flies and I hear a dull thud of a tiny earring that falls who knows where. Well, now I've been looking for this earring for half an hour and I can't find it. Meanwhile, I recovered the second earring, the one I saw a few days ago, and this is here with me on the table. I emptied the box, I looked at its content one thing at the time because I thought maybe I had the impression that it fell on the bed instead it went back inside the box, I took the sheets off the bed, I shook them to see if maybe it would fall on the floor, I looked in all possible and imaginable places and this earring is nowhere to be found. I have to say that things like this have happened to me already in the past. I remember a few years ago that I was certain that I left (yet again) some earring in a place, but these earrings however couldn't be found. I gave up completely, and then after months or actually after years, I found the earrings, like on the carpet in the living room, that is, in a place where it is impossible that they had remained for years without me noticing them, or pulling them up with the vacuum cleaner. Eh, I can't explain these things to myself, I accept them as they are and I'm sure that sooner or later this earring will appear again. Meanwhile, I tell everyone in the house, watch out if you see this earring it's mine, and oh well who else should it belong to, they know it's not theirs, and there are only the three of us in the house, if not one of the cats is necessarily mine. I will let you know if I find this earring.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 195 All'anima della roccia!

    LINK

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (ENGLISH TRANSLATION below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Hey, do you think rocks have a soul? This is the question that 'Practical Ethics' poses. It is a newsletter published by the University of Oxford and it poses several problems of an ethical-philosophical nature, and the one that arises in the 8th of July issue of this year is actually (signed by Charles Foster) is entitled 'What if stones have souls?’ It is a very interesting analysis, not so much in regards to whether rocks have a soul, but because it reflects on how we humans place ourselves in relation to the world around us. Even when we attribute rights to other living beings, non-human, such as animals or plants, for example we do not want animals to be treated badly and almost everywhere in the world there are laws that protect animals from mistreatment. . This Mr. Charles Foster reflects on the fact that we do it, yes, but not out of unconditional love for animals but because we think that animals, especially mammals, especially those closest to us, have feelings, well not so much feelings, that have a sensibility or a conscience similar to us human beings, so we transfer what we think to them, we identify with what could be the pain if we were to feel it. In the same way, when there are laws that protect the forests, that protect the trees, we don't do it, how can I say it, disinterestedly, simply thinking about the well-being of the trees, we do it because the trees are useful to us human beings because they help us with oxygen and help us disperse toxic gases etc., so when we protect animals, when we protect plants, we always do it in a selfish way, thinking that it is good for us. So, this gentleman asks himself the question: we don't actually know if a dog has consciousness, we don't even know what consciousness is, we don't even know what a soul is, and we don't even know if, we can't even unequivocally define what soul and what consciousness mean in us human beings. Well then, couldn't it be then that even beings that we consider soulless, as I said, even though I do not know what exactly is a soul, is it not possible that they too have a soul? For example, stones: what if stones and rocks also had a soul?

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 194 Tutto troppo omogeneo

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I realised that I have a diversity problem, actually I don't like to use the word ‘diversity’ because when I say diversity it means ‘different from what’, different from something that is the norm, let's say that I have realised that I have a problem of variety, variety among friends. I’ve realised that there is very little variety among my friends, among the people I hang out with now that I live in Cagliari. I was used to having a very wide range of acquaintances, I myself represented a variant compared to the majority, because when you were born in Italy and live in another country that is not Italy, you are necessarily part of the ' others' and I was very comfortable being part of the 'others', also because among my friends I counted people of all genders, of all nationalities, of all colors, of all physical and mental abilities. I mean, it’s not like that I went to look for them on purpose, it happened to socialize with friends, friends of friends, at work, in short, I had an incredibly varied and variegated environment around me. Here in Cagliari, I have been thinking about it for a few days, I collect my thoughts and yet all the people I hang out with and whom I consider friends have more or less the same social background as I have, more or less the same political ideas, have roughly my same skin color, my same abilities, and this saddens me a little because I was really used to living in a more varied environment. And yet I asked myself, but why is that Cristina? You haven’t changed, what is it that has changed? It is true that it is a different environment, but how is it that in five years that you have lived here you have not been able to meet people who are a little different from you? Eh, good question! Because the environments are very heterogeneous, because I don't know, as I said, I made friends at work, through friends and friends of friends, and here work, friends and friends of friends are all very, very, very, very homogeneous, because this is a still mono-cultural, mono-lingual, mono-religious, mono-everything society. I do not know what to do. Since I started thinking about it, it occupies my brain, it occupies my mind. Oh well, I'll try to think about it again and then if I can think of something we will communicate it to you in my 3 uncut minutes as I have been doing for almost 200 days.

Ah! Ah!

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Last night, instead of going to bed, I started browsing what’s new on Netflix and before I knew it I had already seen three consecutive episodes of the new series "My unorthodox life". It's the story of Julia Haart, a woman who grew up in a community of ultra-Orthodox Jews in New York, and got married there as they do in these communities, very young, and started having children, and then at one point, she secretly start working, because of course women can't work, can't earn money, can't have an independent life, and then she ran away. Once she ran away within six, seven years she went up to head of one of the most competitive and most successful fashion agencies in the world, and now leads the good life with her children, who almost all of them have also left the ultra Orthodox community, she still has one who is a minor and lives with her ex-husband. It is fascinating, as I said, like all reality TV (which I don’t enjoy watching because I find them terribly boring, also because there is very little reality there, but yesterday I started watching it and I kept on going as I was, how can I say? Attracted, since every episode, very intelligently so, ended with a cliff hanger, so I wanted to
see how it ended, what happened next, I started watching the next episode and before I knew it I had already watched three, so I went to bed very late. No, as I was saying, I realise that reality TV is not real life, also because just picture these super exclusive New York apartments, swimming pools, going on vacation by helicopter, so a life that is absolutely unknown to me, far away, about which I couldn’t care less, but it is interesting, I find it fascinating to get a glimpse of these orthodox worlds, where women are not only second-class citizens, they are last-class citizens, and of such worlds, unfortunately always linked to religion, there are still many, and not just among Jews but also among other religions, and it naturally angers me that it is always women to be second-rate citizens, and I still haven't been able to understand what is that they have these men, these male religious leaders, what they have against women, what we have that scares them so much. And of course I know the answer, because we have the power of life, because willy-nilly we bear life and they don't, and they envy us this.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 192 Ancora DH Lawrence?

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
In January 1921 the writer known by most as D.H. Lawrence, myself included: I went to check and D H stands for David Herbert, so D.H. Lawrence visited Sardinia with his wife and following his trip to Sardinia he wrote the book, the booklet 'Sea and Sardinia'. D.H. Lawrence was not the only well-known personality, the only writer to visit Sardinia, however, he is the one who more than any other has struck the fantasy and imagination of the Sardinian people and of all the villages, of all the cities of Sardinia. I did take the time to read the book 'Sea and Sardinia', well, let's say that Sardinians do not come out very well. Mr. Lawrence travelled with his wife, and he was a wealthy Englishman and behaved exactly as the British used to behave, that is, as a colonialist, and all the things he saw disgusted him, not to mention the horrible descriptions made of the physical aspect of Sardinian men and women. In short, he went around towns and cities and behaved like a master, an owner, a proprietor of the works. He didn't show even the slightest interest in understanding what he saw, but he judged from his point of view, not speaking the language, not knowing the history, the traditions. Anyway, yes what is surprising is how this trip has struck the imagination of my countrypeople, because if you happen to take a tour in Sardinia you will notice that in a lot of villages, a lot of towns, hamlets there are commemorative plaques: here went by D.H. Lawrence, here he stopped, here he drank a coffee, here he took a walk etc., and the villages really compete to place these plates, even in Cagliari you can see them, here stopped to drink a coffee Lawrence, in this famous café in this famous bar. It almost seems that being seen through the eyes of the world famous stranger, being seen by the writer who then describes us, never mind if he describes us as, let's say, more or less, like little more than animals, it doesn't matter, the important thing is being described by a famous person. This is a bit of an attitude, a bit provincial, a bit of provincialism. You see, there are also other famous people who visited Sardinia, I mention one, the first that comes to mind, Cervantes the author of Don Quixote, not to mention the Sardinians who wrote about Sardinia and who were not foreigners. But Sardinians like to talk about Lawrence.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 191 Il futuro dell'Internet

This podcast with English subtitles https://youtu.be/ZnDdoZAdpKk

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I have in my hand a volume with a black hardcover, large format, "Internet: analysis, impact, scenarios", the internet: analysis, impact, scenarios - Cristina Marras Master of Communications 1998 Swinburne. It is the bound volume of my master's thesis, it was in fact 1998, the Internet had existed for a short time, so much so that when I began to compile the bibliographic notes there were still no rules that said how to write internet sites. At the time there were very few Internet sites, I used to go from home to the university server via a modem, it made a lot of noise and I was very proud because at some point I got a second phone line so that I could have the internet connected continuously, this 'continuously' is in inverted commas as of course it was very, very slow. But why am I talking about my master's thesis? Because during the master's lessons I was literally struck by a presentation that they made on the creation of future scenarios, a particular technique not to predict the future but to analyze the present, and within my master's thesis there are forecasts for the future. future regarding the penetration of the Internet in everyday life. I created three scenarios set in the distant 2020 and in each of these scenarios I analyzed how the impact of the Internet could have shaped Australian society. In one the impact was more or less similar to that of '98 when I wrote the thesis, in one it was very pronounced and in another people would have instead withdrawn to live in remote places far from technology. I have not reread these three scenarios that have been written precisely, a characteristic of the technique of writing scenarios is that they are written just like real scripts and therefore you have to describe the environment, the characters, and reading them you almost get the impression to be reading short stories. Well, I want to take the time to read them again, I want to see how much I guessed correctly. I think it won’t be much, also because it was a time of great enthusiasm regarding technology and the possibilities of technology. Anyway I will read them, I will keep you updated and maybe I will tell you something in the coming days of these future Internet scenarios of mine.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 190 Michaela

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)
BUM! BUM! Che a me piaceva tantissimo.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
In a few weeks Michaela will come to visit. Michaela has been a friend of mine from time immemorial and she was my first 'independent' friend in Berlin in the sense that she was the first friend of my grandmother who I met through friends or friends of friends. We met with Michaela in an employment center for youth works, it was called ABM - Arbeitsbeschaffungsmaßnahmen, they gave jobs to unemployed young people, in exchange these unemployed young people had to go and meet someone who gave a some information on how to find a stable job, what to do in life, and I found myself there quite by chance, let's say that I was the only one enrolled at the university, I was enrolled at the uni in Cagliari while I lived in Berlin, while the other people who were part of this program were a little less people, let's say, motivated, and one of these was Michaela, she is five years younger than me, so she was younger than me and she was a young rebel rowdy and we bonded immediately, we immediately became friend, and then for a certain period we also lived together, she welcomed me at her house when I was going through moments of change, let's say, let's say that Michaela was the first person I turned to when I needed support, both spiritual and material, and with Michaela we also did things that you do when you are young, when you are in your twenties, for example from time to time we took the bus from Berlin to Paris to visit the city, but since we were penniless, we took this very long journey by bus that lasted all night, then spent as many hours as possible in Paris without having to take accommodation because we could not afford it and then they returned, after 12 hours 13 hours we returned to Berlin, we spent weekends like this, then we went dancing, it was the periods of techno music, I remember these fantastic nights that we went to the disco in winter and when we left early in the morning Berlin was a white city, covered in snow, and we still had the ears stunned by techno music BUM! BUM! BUM! Which I liked very much. Any way, in a few weeks at the beginning of August Michaela will come to visit, we have not seen each other for almost 30 years and one last thing: Michaela lived in a street that can be seen in the film Wings of Desire, Gleditschstraße. Michaela, I can't wait to hug you again!

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Regine Debatty's newsletter "We make money not art" latest issue is about all the pollution that has been caused by staying at home due to the pandemic. Because it is true that digital technology has allowed us to survive mentally and also professionally during all these months of the pandemic, we have used digital to watch films, to make our videos, videoconferences, for many other activities, to order food, to exercise, and it is also true that during 2020 we also stopped using the plane, so it should be said we used less energy. The problem is that even though we stayed at home during the pandemic, the economy we created is incredibly high in carbon emission. In the newsletter "We make money not art" there is an excellent (long) article, I put the link because it's really worth reading as there are so many ideas, I only tell you a few in my three minutes. Reference is made to The Shift Project which is a French organization that in 2019 was already asking for an attempt to create a low-carbon economy. This organization calculated that the digital sector is responsible, it was responsible for 4% of emissions of gases harmful to the environment, 4% is comparable to the total emitted by the aircraft sector, so we when we think of air travel we think that they are the big polluters, while digital does pollute big time. There is so much food for thought, such as all the energy needed, the electricity needed to power our computers, our digital tools, and the energy needed to create the servers to do Google searches, to make purchases on Amazon. As I said: it is incredibly full of ideas, interesting, and also scary reading because we have not yet found a way to change the economic model.
