    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English text below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Yes, it's true. Translating is tiring, because there is no such a thing as a one-to-one correspondence, words that have a two-way meaning, that is, a single meaning. Even if we take a word let's say, simple, like 'sedia' / 'chair', that's if I say 'chair' in English I'm not just saying 'sedia' but I'm also saying president, command, tenure, in short, I'm saying a lot of other things I'm not saying if I say the Italian word ‘sedia’. Why is that? Because translating is hard work. Let someone who does it tell you, I've been translating for almost 30 years. Sometimes there is the temptation to use, in this case speaking of English, translating from Italian into English, you are tempted to use the English word that perfectly sums up in a very precise way the concept we want to convey from the English community or society into the Italian. This is for several reasons, also because in English, unlike in Italian, very often a noun can also be used as a verb, while we know that in Italian this is not only impossible but when I use a verb, I must also immediately decide whether I am speaking in the singular in the plural in the masculine or in the feminine. But you must do it, it is a fundamental and indispensable thing to do because otherwise the language becomes a mixture between Italian and English. This has social and political consequences. As I said, it is very, very complicated, translating is a time-consuming process, even when you know the language well. I usually translate and then I put it aside, ideally for a day, and then I go back because once the words have been translated, I have to readjust the sentences so that they sound Italian, so that they sound as if they had been pronounced for the first time by an Italian native speaker, because there are many phrases that can be translated and that have a meaning but that a native speaker would never say, a bit like what happens when many Italians speak English, but they speak school English, or they translate using Italian word structures that a native speaker would never use. But please let's make the effort, because, as I said, the question of language is primarily a political one. The hegemony of English is not only a linguistic hegemony but it can also very easily become a political hegemony, hegemony of cultural models and philosophical models, and I don't think the models that come from the United States are the best.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English text below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
An airport for aliens that is currently run by dogs. This is the title of the last video game that caught my attention, so much so that I went to look for it, I looked at the trailer I read an article published in The Guardian (I will put all the notes of all the links in the program notes ) 'An Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs' is a very strange video game where in the title there is already all the explanation. We are the only living beings left alive in the universe, we and our partner, she too is in one of these airports who knows where in the universe and we must try to meet. The airports are deserted, in fact, there is only us, and everywhere there are writings, but they are in a language that we do not know, so from time to time we are given boarding passes, directions, but in this unknown language that we must try to decipher. All this inside airports that are managed by dogs, they are not normal dogs, they are dogs that must be represented with archive images, stock images, images from image banks. It is a very funny thing, it is also a very alienating thing, because imagine the setting in this airport, an airport not drawn with photographic precision, you know lately, video games almost look like movies, well, not this one, this is clearly seen that the drawings are drawings, and the only images (real photos) are those of the dogs that we find in all ways in all shapes and form. They tell us more or less what to do, but you know, dogs want to be stroked, dogs want us to throw the stick so they can fetch. It's interesting because I hardly play video games, but I like it when I find video games that have different premises than the usual shooting and world conquest. This video game gives us the opportunity to reflect on, I'm not saying reflect on who we are, but reflect about the things we do, about the spaces in which we move. It is a small independent game, so it is not one of those that go to the big production houses, so surely a small team worked on it, even though the author of the game is a very well known author among those who know about video games: Xalavier Nelson Jr. has made some very interesting video games. That’s it, I just wanted to share this little gem with you. I don't know if I'll buy it, I repeat because I don't play video games, but I like to read about video games. Surely it is something that jumped to my eyes and that intrigued me. What can I say more? I'll end with woof woof.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English below)

    ENGLISH TEXT
I don't know whether this is something typically Sardinian, the truth is that every time there is the possibility of recovering a public space that had been taken away from the community, every time there is the possibility of renovating some work that in the past has gone into disrepair, there is always the chorus that rises saying 'let's build a hotel'. Now, I am referring in particular to a mammoth structure that was in the city beach of Cagliari, right on the Poetto beach, a very large structure that I have known since childhood in ruins. I went to check it and it dates back to the 1930s, to the end of the 1930s, a famous architect, go figure, Badas, made the project for the construction of a summer camp for children which, however, was never built. Now I'm not going to tell you about the various vicissitudes of this building which at the time when it was designed must have been very beautiful but - I repeat - for many years, probably for half a century, it has been on the beach and is a ruin, that is, unused, unusable, in continuous decay and falling apart. This structure, called, which is known with the name of the former Maritime Hospital, has a characteristic, because at the beginning of each Cagliari election campaign the party wanting to take power begins, way before the elections, by proposing new uses which, however, are never new, but it's always about saying “Ah! Let's build a hotel there”. Now, I have done this long introduction to say that I don't understand why we don't look at the existing models when it comes to development of the territory, models that start from the vocation of the territory itself. I mean, hotels can be built anywhere, we sadly saw this applied here in Sardinia. Why not use such a prominent location so close to the sea for something that has to do with the sea? In fact, there was someone who proposed to use it as a nice museum of the sea, without the aquarium of course (we don't need aquariums) but a museum of the culture of the sea, a museum that highlights the uses and traditions, culture, everything you can do, maybe even with a sailing or canoeing school I don't know, however things more relevant to the sea, respecting the territory. You see, I do not understand why we continue to look for development models that have already proved unsuccessful for some time.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Today I want to talk to you about Cities and Memory, city and memory, which is this project of a madman, you will excuse me if I call you that, Stuart Fowkes, who is this person whom I call mad because in addition to having a job that occupies him all day, he devotes a crazy amount of time, energy and enthusiasm to this project of his, which is precisely Cities and Memory where he, from time to time, asks people around the world to send him sounds that then invites artists, podcasters or simply people interested, in mixing and inventing stories and changing their original meaning. On the occasion of Dante Alighieri's anniversary, I think it’s the seven hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Dante Alighieri, he decided to make an opera omnia work by asking artists, podcasters to re-imagine the circles of Hell and each was asked to choose a particular circle and then to create a work that represents, an audio work that represents that particular place in Hell. I threw myself into it and chose the one who has always been my hero, Odysseus, and I chose, however, to tell the story of Odysseus from the point of view of one of his sailors, or rather a sailoress who disguised herself as a man to be able to follow Odysseus in his adventures, because she is in love with Odysseus, in fact, hence the title of my piece, I love you Odysseus, so partly because she is in love with Odysseus, and partly because she is in love with the adventure, and I imagined this girl and the only way for her to be able to go on adventures, to see unknown places, to fight, to discover, in these very dangerous situations would be to dress up as a man to be able to follow the troop, the crew of Odysseus and then of course she is also secretly in love with Odysseus. Mine is just one of the many audios that were then commissioned, we can say so, then chosen and included in this very beautiful, fascinating project. I will put all the notes and all the links in the notes of the program that I invite you to go through and with this Dantesque image I conclude my three uncut minutes today.

Sto pensando all'oscurità.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I am thinking of the dark. For some time now, I have begun to reflect about darkness, light and things that are halfway between dark and light. I have always had an interest, for example, in the nations that are in the north of the world. Lately, also thanks to Netflix, I made a feast of series set in Iceland or in other northern countries. Well, I am really reflecting on what are the manifestations of the lack of light rather than of light. I began to think about what are the things that need darkness to thrive. I am doing this little research as I know best, that is, through sound, through podcasts, as a matter of fact I have recently finished a podcast where I tell about a game I used to play as a child in the dark or in dim light. Yes, I have started looking and thinking about what are the things that require darkness. The first thing that came to my mind is one thing, I think it is typically Sardinian but can be also found in other regions, which is something that I don't remember the name in Sardinian but it’s about growing wheat under the bed, you know those old beds, the tall ones with metallic mesh, and the wheat grows in the dark under the bed precisely because it must grow in the dark, because it must grow white and then this white wheat is used, I no longer remember in which ritual, however it is something religious where you have to have white wheat, I think white here serves to represent purity. Other things that are done in the dark, the first that came to mind is loading the film into the small development tank. Do you remember, when there were still cameras with film? While a red light was used to print photos, the development of the film had to be done in total darkness. I remember when I used to take photographs, I had learned to perform it with a kind of muff that I put my hands on left and right, it consisted of a very heavy black cloth, and I used to perform the operations blindly, and I used to perform the operations blindly, a bit like when they show killers, hit-men who manage to take apart the gun and put it back together with their eyes closed. Other things that are done in the dark, if you can think of any let me know because, as I said, I am looking for things that require darkness to thrive.

Happy birthday Roberta.

    TEXT IN ENGLISH
I remember very well the first time I met Roberta: she was sitting on the steps of the theater, I have just finished acting, I was acting in an Italian-Australian amateur drama, and she had just arrived in Melbourne to visit, she did not know at the time that she too would have gone to live there for a while. As I said, I was acting in an amateur theatre company while Roberta was already an accomplished actress, very well known, she came from the Strehler’s school. Well, she struck me not only for this beautiful trouser suit she was wearing (I think it was Giorgio Armani) but for her amazing voice: the most nocturnal, hot, sexy voice I had ever heard. And there we smoked a cigarette together, I was still smoking back then, I had just finished acting in this amateur company and she is a great actress already established, and there we met, we became friends and we have never left each other since. Roberta is a fantastic person, one of those people so sweet that, nothing, she is a beautiful person inside and outside. We have done lots of things together, for a while we also lived together with our little families, our small families, and we always met and always kept in touch despite the kilometers, despite the distances, despite the things that happen in life, and she has always welcomed me in her tiny house, first in the tiny house, the tiny apartment in Monteverde, above the rooftops of Rome, and then in the large house with several floors in Vercelli, the theater house. With Roberta I always have this feeling, from the beginning I have had it, it is like when you take a box of matches from the table and shake it to see if there are any matches inside, we all do it automatically, without having a reason for it, without really needing to light a match, but when we shake the box and there are actually matches inside, that noise, the tinkling of sticks against the cardboard walls gives a sense of satisfaction and gratification. This is the feeling that Roberta has always given me, being close to her. I am very sorry not to be able to see her show where she talks about me, but I know that soon I will be able to see it Roberta, I hope that soon we will also be able to hug each other again, in the meantime I want to send you this as my very personal birthday present. We will talk on the phone later, but I really wanted to send you this and tell you that I love you and that I am happy that you are still and remained and that I hope you will remain in my life for a long time. TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English text will follow)
Buon San Giovanni.

    ENGLISH TEXT
Last night for the first time I prepared St. John's water. It is an ancient tradition that I had heard of but had never put it into practice. Well now, also thanks to the recent talks with friends, last night I decided to prepare the water of San Giovanni. What is it about? Well, on the eve of St. John's night (that is June 23) you take a container with water and put some flowers in it, flowers that can be whatever flowers you find, even the flowers that you have on the balcony, or you can go and collect them in the fields, trying not to destroy the flower beds, so take the flowers and put them into a basin with water, that must be left out all night so that the water collects, the water with the flowers, collects the night dew, and then in the morning use this water to wash your face and to wash your hands and it should be a propitious thing of good omen or in any case a way to greet the beginning of the summer season. I did it with a lot of trepidation, I must say, because I like rites even if I know very few of them, more than anything else I know them by hearsay because no rites were made in my family, not of this type, despite my mother having peasant origins and therefore knowing a whole series of rites that I am sure when she was a child were performed religiously. So now I have just woken up, you can hear it also from my voice, I haven't even had breakfast yet. In a while I'll go to the balcony, I put on the flowered kimono for the occasion, in the morning when I get up I don't use dressing gowns I use a set of kimonos, maybe one day I'll tell you where I got them, the adventures of their purchase. With my floral kimono now I'm going to rinse my face and hands, to do the ablutions with this wonderful water of San Giovanni which, by the way, was beautiful yesterday against a black sky with this amazing full moon. Happy St. John.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 171 Religioni
A me sembra logico.

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TEXT
Let's say that the message and the rule should be very simple, and that is as follows: if your religion forces you to discriminate against someone, to treat someone differently by denying someone their rights, you should give up that religion and look for another one, although if I believe you would have great difficulty finding a religion that does not treat someone worse than others and unfortunately, that I know of (but please correct me), practically all religions treat women as Z citizens because a lot of religions, I repeat: I can't think (haven't done much research), but that I know there aren't any mainstream religions that recognize women, or (god forbid, other more fluid genders) the rights they recognize heterosexual men. Let's reflect for a moment, for example, from a purely political point of view, how much Western states that declare themselves secular take it out on states where a religion reigns. Think of Iran, they say yes but that is a theocracy because the head of state is also the spiritual head, he decides and so on. Guess what? We also have one of our own of these states: the Vatican. The Vatican is by constitution a theocratic state where only males over I do not know how many years of age have the right to vote, because the head of state is the pope elected by bishops who are male and have more than a certain number of years, a very small group of males, because (how many are they, not sure, forty? I don't know) but anyway so we don't throw stones if we live in a glass house. These days we debate on religions and on the interference of religions in secular life, such as it should be in a secular state (until proven otherwise the Italian state is a secular state), well, there has been a lot of interference. So what can I tell you dear friends? If the religion you belong to, because they forced you to belong to it as a child, if you don't like it anymore, well ... change your religion, or even go without religion, decide actively, decide for yourself if you want to belong to a religion that discriminates against others.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 170 Negozi strani

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
There are some shops in my city that every time I see them I think, who knows what these places really are. I mean, because they are shops that I have always seen the shutters closed, I have never seen anyone inside, or shops that also have a window that I can see passing in front but that, nothing, it's all dusty, they have all sort of things stacked up, one on top of the other. Right, for example in the immediate vicinity of my home, for example, there is a butcher's shop that since we came to live here, now it will be almost four years ago, well I have always seen the shutters closed (these are the noises that come from the open window). Then there is a haberdashery with a dusty window. In the shop window there are the most disparate things: swimwear thrown in such mess, not even hanging on a crutch, nothing, just thrown in a mess, balls of wool, pieces of ribbons, just imagine all the things that can be found inside of a haberdashery. This haberdashery, specifically, from time to time has signs that read 'for rent', sometimes also 'for sale', sometimes I even saw a person inside it, it was a person who had a chair right at the door, so that even if a person wanted to get in to see what they are selling, one would literally have to step over the person sitting in the chair. This person is a young girl, quite young, it is always her, I see her every couple of months, sitting at the door. I confess that I am really tempted to see what is inside. I repeat, lately I have seen some swimsuits but really, they seem to be from twenty years ago, during the winter instead - evidently they had changed the window for the season - there were winter jackets but these too, thrown in a pile helter skelter, and they looked really dusty, and then not old enough to be vintage. Who knows if anyone will ever buy anything. So I don't know, I don't know if also in your area there are these shops that you don't know if they are the front for something else, there are also several shops that sell shoes similar to this haberdashery, they have old shoes, not old enough to be vintage, but enough that nobody buys them. I repeat, I don't know if there such strange shops also in your area, that you don't know if they are open or closed.
