  • 3' grezzi Ep. 168 Tendenze moda

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/06/18/business/fashion-forecasting.html?referringSource=articleShare

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)
Quindi tenete d'occhio cottagecore e coatigans.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The New York Times has published a very interesting article on what will be the fashion trends in this second part of 2021. Interesting because there are companies that have been involved in predicting trends for some time, so one year in advance, before the pandemic, they used different methods to see what people would like to wear in the following year. But then the pandemic happened and everything that the companies had imagined both in terms of trends and in terms of warehouse storage, all went down the drain. In the sense that people certainly did not start buying either high heels or jackets with ties because everyone more or less, well actually we ‘all’ stayed at home all over the world, this was truly a worldwide trend. Now, however, slowly we resume living and we are also resuming going out. Companies that sell clothing are wondering what will characterize the future. Well, just like for working, now that people have tasted what it is like working from home, they don't want to go back to the office, or at least they don't want to go back for 40 hours a week, and also for their clothing, people have realized that in fact it is more comfortable to be in a tracksuit rather than a jacket and tie buttoned up with a tight neck, however someone will have to go back to the office, and in any case also, not everyone wants to be 24 hours a day in the tracksuit. So there are new trends that slowly begin to emerge, but instead of going to see them in fashion shows or in prototypes secretly prepared by the great designers, now the trends are those that emerge from the Internet, from the searches that people do on Google, of things they would like to buy or see or find, or from what appears on social media such as Instagram and TikTok. Among the trends that I found mentioned in this New York Times article (I will put the link in the program notes), two are those that struck me. One is the 'cottagecore' the 'cottagecore fashion', it is practically long floral dresses, like house on the prairie, you have already seen around the puff sleeves, and the second trend is that of the 'coatigans' that is a long cardigans like coat, beautiful and warm. So keep an eye out for cottagecore and coatigans.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English text below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I have a strange relationship with the news. For many years when I was working as a journalist I was more or less forced to keep informed. I read the three Melbourne newspapers every day, they were delivered at my home in the morning and by the time I got to the office I had already seen all the news, and then I was always listening to a radio program that only broadcast news. I have always followed the Italian news only a little, partly because I don't like the way Italian newspapers operate, they always take everything for granted, they are incredibly self-referential: if you don't already know what they're talking about, you don't understand anything. Then I don't like the theater of Italian politics and butchery news does not interest me, indeed this was precisely why I stopped working as a journalist because I was no longer interested in giving certain news, what I call 'running behind the ambulance '. Since moving back to Italy, let's say that strangely enough, the only news I started to follow was from the United States and for the whole period of the pandemic I listened compulsively (do you say compulsive in Italian?) in an exaggerated way everything, all the news that came from the US. Yes, I knew everything about what was happening in the then Trump government, I knew absolutely nothing about what was happening in the various Italian governments that followed one another. This culminated with the assault on the congress last January and then suddenly I stopped following everything, now I no longer follow either Italian or Australian or US politics. In the morning I still wake up with Radio 3 Mondo where they read the international newspapers, and then I listen to Prima Pagina where they read the national newspapers, so do I follow a bit but from a distance, I don't know why sometimes these waves of total apathy take over. Well, as far as Italian politics is concerned, I already explained it a bit: I don't like Italian politics, I find it badly done, I find it unpleasant, I find it too coarse in tone. Then I don't watch TV so 70% of what the newspapers talk about is Arabic for me because when you don't watch TV you don't get the references because – as I said - Italian newspapers are only self-referential. Oh well, today I wanted to dedicate my 3 uncut minutes to my approach to news.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 166 Cos'è il podcast? (1)

    https://www.theguardian.com/media/2004/feb/12/broadcasting.digitalmedia

TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation will follow shortly below, just give me the time to work on it)

    https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2021/jun/10/reply-all-when-podcasts-go-sour-can-shows-come-back-from-scandal

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English translation below)

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Reply All is one of my favorite podcasts, a podcast about the Internet, but it’s difficult to explain, brilliant simply brilliant. The two Reply All hosts, authors, were PJ Vogt and Alex Goldman, I had started following them when they were doing a similar podcast with practically a structure was very very similar to Reply All, it was called TLDR, the acronym for 'too long didn't read' (which means too long I haven't read it) and what happened? What happened was that Reply All changed radically because one of the two presenters, PJ Vogt, turned out that over the years, over the months, I don't know, he had behaved badly with the people who worked on the podcast. While the show was, still is, very very fair, very democratic, very careful about what they say - they do some crazy fact-checking to ensure that what is then said on the air actually matches reality, instead it turns out that one of the two presenters in private life was opposed to trade unions, had bully attitudes and so on. And what happened? They have kicked him out from the podcast, I don't know if he has resigned, he is no longer presenting the podcast and now to support the remaining host, Alex, there someone who is also good, but the two initial hosts had a chemistry, they had known each other for many years so you could also feel when they were on the air the harmony that was there and that also made the podcast interesting, in short, I liked it very much. Now with the new host is here, I can't follow it anymore. Let's say that in the various forums that I follow dedicated to this podcast they have been kind of stoning me because they say how can you? you can't be so against new things! he had to be sent away! cut the new host some slack! But I don't know, I can't, I feel a bit like when you go out with someone but with your mind you think about your ex. I don't know, I liked the balance so much also because they were really amazing, so good. There is one of their last episodes, just before this scandal broke out, where practically there is a guy who calls and says there is this tune that I have in my head and I cannot get it out of my head, and they actually reconstruct the tune and they manage to find out what song it is, in short, it was and has been said to be the best podcast episode ever. Now, I don't know if this is the case, but it's certainly exciting and I'm here and I don't know what to do without Reply All.

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I don't know if it ever happens to you, sometimes I happen to remember excerpts of something I saw in an exhibition and, nothing, I start thinking and I don't stop until I remember where I saw it, especially pieces of video. In Melbourne, there were several art galleries specialized in showing video art. Today I remembered one, and thanks to the Internet I was even able to find it. It is a work called "The Nightwatch", the night watchman, and is by Francis Alÿs. Francis Alÿs went to London, he is originally Mexican, he went to London for a series of video installations, around the idea of surveillance, the cameras that are on the street in public places and that film people as they pass by. This work is of a couple of years ago, I think 2003 - 2004. Anyhow, I will briefly explain what it is about, so you will also understand why it remained in my mind. The work was a series of about ten videos showing the Tate Gallery in London where an exhibition on Spanish painting by traditional Spanish artists was in progress. So you know, kings, their families, dogs, still life, etc. And what did the artist do? He took a fox, a real fox, and literally unleashed it inside the rooms of the Tate, the museum, at night, when the museum was closed of course. His work consists of the footage shot by the cameras that are in every room of the Tate, motion activated cameras. So through his work, the videos, you can follow this fox passing from one room to another in this museum with these incredible paintings, Spanish Baroque, with all these golden things, the gigantic frames, and the fox, going from one painting to another, passing under one painting, then the other, climbing on the benches that are usually used by people to sit, going under the bench, sniffing, and ... there is no sound, because they are only images, but it is quite a disquieting thing, one thing ... to see this wild animal moving through the halls of a museum. It is disquieting. I'll put the link so you can take a look, I'll put the link in the program notes, let's see if it has the same effect on you.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO [English text below]

    ENGLISH TRANSLATION
With the start of the summer season, everyone, more or less, begins to advertise to entice people to come holidaying in Sardinia. Among those who advertise there are also the institutional bodies. And I don't know, I'm Sardinian, I love my land, but every time I see institutional advertisements (I'm referring to the one just published by the Sardinia Region, I'll put the link in the program notes), I get a lump in my stomach because it always feels terribly rhetorical, cliched, always repeating the same banalities. Perhaps it is also the tone of voice of the speakers who are chosen for these campaigns, speakers who seem like actors taken straight from a theatre stage, with their contrived voices. As a Sardinian I do not feel absolutely represented because, let me remind you, there is no such a thing as ‘pure Italian’, Italian without a regional accent, when we say "this is Italian without a regional accent" actually we are talking about Dante's regional Italian. I don't feel represented by these people who studied voice acting in Milan and then entice people to come to Sardinia with their contrived voices, and the latest advertisement put out by the Sardinia Region has a man's voice that sounds straight out of a film for adults, a voice "like this", come on! And then, I don't know, maybe I have an exaggerated sensitivity, but it really seems to me that the same jumble of things is always repeated: that the Sardinians are a proud and ancient people , and that we are generous, and that hospitality is sacred, and that ‘knowledge and flavors’. Mamma Mia! Enough is enough! But is it possible that you do not realize that the moment you begin to pronounce the sentence, the listener already knows how it will end? There is no surprise, there is no wonder, you do not surprise anyone, you say things that have indeed been done to death. Perhaps it would be better to focus a little more on actions to ensure that this open-air museum that is in fact Sardinia, yes full of traditions, but damn it, let’s put people visiting Sardinia in the conditions to go and see these wonderful things, let's talk about a public transport network so that people don't have to rent a car to get from point A to point B, let's talk about museums that don't close for lunch to reopen at 4pm. Maybe this would be something more interesting to talk about.

Today for my three uncut minutes I want to take you into the maze of the sites that I put among my favorites, and then probably never go back, I forget I saved them. Today I went to see, to sift through what I put in my favorites. I start with 'The name of the Rose - background ambience generator' an ambient music generator based on the novel “The Name of the Rose”, so you have Gregorian chants, the chapel, poltergeists, the examiners looking for evidence among leaves etc. . Then I found “Every Noise at Once” is a blank page with a lot of written, clickable words, and each word is a type of music, e.g. hard trance, terror core, dark electro, Japanese techno, deep house, Brazilian bass German house, Greek house, let's see, let’s scroll a bit, girl group, in short you click on one of these words and hear the type of music, but there are types of music that a person does not expect Indian IDN that I don't know what it is, Jersey club, in short, a lot of types of music. Then “Eel slap”, is a white page with the photo, the image of a gentleman, and as you move the mouse over the gentleman's face, an eel appears giving him a slap, so you can go back and forth and slap this gentleman’s face forever. Then I have, yes, a collection, a site where there is a collection of, you know the envelopes used to send for example pin numbers, with all sort of patterns inside, to prevent people from seeing the numbers through the envelope, here is this person who made the site where there are only these open envelopes, those patterns that usually are not seen because inside, you can go here and see the different types of security envelope designs. Then there is another site called 'Hoooooooorse', basically horse with a lot of 'o' and it's a horse drawn with machine language that you then scroll and it has infinite legs, meaning that the legs go down forever, it's silly, it means nothing. And then there is another where there is a chessboard where there are pawns, a game of checkers that is played by itself, you cannot do absolutely anything, you can only watch the chessboard with the pieces that move. I repeat absolutely useless. Then there is another thing called “Staggering beauty” a moving snake that you can move fast or slow with the mouse, and if you move it very fast it becomes a psychopath. The last site is a place where you click and it offers you things to buy that are weird or strange, the first thing it offered me to buy was canned unicorn meat.

    TRASCRIZIONE TESTO [English text below]
Ok? Ci proviamo?

    ENGLISH TEXT
Talking about things you don't know is always difficult and dangerous, but it also becomes offensive when it’s about ‘worlds’ that we don’t know. I'm thinking about the world of disabilities. I often hear people who speak of the blind as 'sightless'. I have tried to explain several times that the blind are blind, not ‘sightless’. But there is this feeling that saying blind is offensive. This is because, unfortunately, often ‘blind’ is used (and not only the word blind but also other definitions of disability) are used in common language as insults: "are you blind?". Here is the negative feeling when using the word blind, but this is our problem, I mean, the problem is that we shouldn’t use the words of disability as insults and unfortunately it is still done too often. The blind are blind not ‘sightless’ because defining someone in negative as ‘someone who doesn’t, cannot do something' well you get it too without me needing to explain it in full, it is not a nice thing because defining someone ‘sightless’ means I, the seeing person, am the center, the term of comparison and the rest of the world is seen in relation to me, to what I can do, and if others can do what I can do. So this is the first thing, also because it was even decreed by the World Health Organization, by the blind themselves: it’s called Italian Union of the Blind, not of the ‘sightless’. So first things first: it’s blind, not ‘sightless’. But there are also other phrases. I understand that it is difficult, however, when you do not know what to say just go and look thank goodness there’s Internet, you find everything there. It is also wrong to say a person is 'suffering from, sick with' because it is not the person who is affected and sick, the disability is such only because the person does not have the tools to access what people without disabilities are given access to. Let me give you an example: if you are short-sighted, you don’t see well, you can see badly from a distance you put on your glasses and you see very well. So don't say suffering from but with disability with syndrome of, because it is not it is not a disease it is a state that requires (a physical or mental state) that requires a subsidy an external help, a tool. Often preventing the person with disabilities from doing what all those without disabilities do are architectural barriers, is the lack of urban planning is the lack of sensitivity towards the sensibilities of others. Ok? Shall we try?

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (English transcript below)
Buona domenica.

    TRANSCRIPT
Last night at half past two in the morning we have stopped in front of the bakery, a pastry shop in a street in the old town, and the door was open and you could see the people working inside, preparing the pastries, buns with cream, maybe bread. We have peeped out to buy a couple of pastries for breakfast this morning. It was a beautiful night, a warm night, in fact we were wearing just a T-shirt, no need to carry a sweater when you go out in the evening now we are in full summer in Cagliari. It had been a long time since I bought croissants for breakfast on my way home the night before. And I must confess, it had also been a long time since I went back home at 2:30am. It's nice, it was a very nice evening. First presenting the NonTurismo book on the Villaggio Pescatori (Fishermen Village), Giorgino we did it in a central café, in a historic café in Cagliari, in the pedestrian area, and then with the book work group, Riverrun, we went to dinner, and later, a fantastic after-dinner, fooling around, joking and having fun like I haven't done in a very long time. This is also an indication of how things are slowly returning to normal. It is true, at the restaurant we were wearing face masks when we got up to go out for a moment, or to move inside, it is true that returning home, even if it was late at night, (actually we looked at each other at a certain point wondering, wasn’t the curfew at midnight? Boh!) I honestly swear I don't know. Well, yes and there were lots of people on the street. Some images of the lockdown came to mind, I particularly remember one day that I went to bring some prescriptions to my Mum, it was a Saturday afternoon and the main street of Cagliari was deserted: for the entire distance from my Mum’s house to my house, less than 20 minutes on foot, however, through the historic center, usually very busy streets, I had not met a living soul and it really shocked me. There you go, things are slowly returning to normal, also thanks to these already very summery temperatures above 30 degrees, so nothing I just wanted to share with you this moment of happiness. It’s nice being here, and having friends around and returning home at night, stopping to buy croissants for breakfast in the morning. Have a nice Sunday.

    TESTO TRASCRITTO (ENGLISH TEXT BELOW)

    ENGLISH TEXT
Among the different newsletters I receive every morning one particularly intrigued me this morning it's called 'Ellissi' and the title read: why you should be afraid of buttons. Nice title, well done! So, what is it about? Apparently, up until the introduction of electricity in the homes, I think towards the end of the 19th century, buttons, hence switches, were only fund Then, suddenly, people also found these buttons inside their homes. Back then it was something magical because you only needed to press the button and something magical happened: the elevator moved, the light turned on and so on. But the brilliant thing about this newsletter is that it used this title, that immediately caught my attention, with this example, to talk about something else: the buttons that today on the Internet the buttons that force us to do things we don't want to. That what's called 'dark pattern' I haven't found (oh well, I haven't even looked for it) 'dark pattern' could be translated as 'dark paths'. It's those interface constructions of certain websites that force us to do something we didn't intend to. You know when you subscribe to a service then you want to stop the subscription and subscribing is very easy? The buttons you need to press to subscribe are huge, red, large, but then if you want to cancel the subscription you have to go to look for it, it's very difficult or they are misleading: you think that by clicking here you do one thing but you are doing the exact opposite instead. A funny thing about this newsletter is that it also explains how we haven't invented this. Proof of this is an image dating back to 1938. It is a ballot paper distributed to the people in Germany and Austria for the reunification of Germany and Austria. We know that we are in 1938 and one year later Germany will invade Poland. This ballot is really funny it reads something along the lines, you know the ballot slips for our referendum? something similar, but it reads: "Do you want Germany and Austria to be reunited for the glory of Adolf Hi7ler?" (Adolf Hi7ler nicely written in bold fonts) and then there is a huge 'yes' and a very tiny 'no'. It's really funny to see, if weren't that history proves to be anything but funny. But this is to say that even talking about the most filthy filth that we could come up with today, even there, we didn't invent anything even there, history teaches us something. There you go: if we studied history, we would even understand something about the Internet.
