Add oil

You got this、You'll do great;上台表演用 Break a leg;對方在苦撐用 Hang in there、Keep it up;場邊喊 Let's go;事後肯定用 You crushed it。

Dialogue

Sean: Hey, big presentation in ten minutes, right? How are you feeling?

Julia: Nervous. My hands are sweating. In Chinese we'd just say jia you, but that's not a thing here.

Sean: Jia you? Oh, people translate that as add oil, right? Like for a car. I've never heard anyone say it.

    (Jia you?

Julia: Exactly my problem. So what do you say when someone's about to go on stage?

Sean: Depends. Right before something big, we'd say you got this, or you'll do great.

在大事之前,我們會說 you got this(你可以的),或 you'll do great(你會表現得很好)。)

Julia: And if it's a performance? My friend has a recital tonight.

Sean: Then break a leg. It's a theater thing. Sounds violent, means good luck.

    (那就說 break a leg。

Julia: Break a leg. Got it. What about when someone's already struggling, like halfway through a tough week?

    (Break a leg,

Sean: Hang in there. Or keep it up, if they're doing well. Anyway, you got this. Go get them.

Are you convenient!

中文的「方便」可以說人,但英文 convenient 只能形容時間、事情、地點,人只能放在 for 後面——Is that convenient for you? Does that work for you? / Is this a good time?。這集用跟同事約開會時間的情境,拆掉三個最常直翻錯的「方便」句,教你 available、work for、a good time、when works for you 怎麼用。

Dialogue

Rachel: Hey Eric, I want to set up the project meeting. Are you convenient next Tuesday?

Eric: Ha, you mean, does Tuesday work for me? Yeah, Tuesday's fine. What time?

Rachel: Ten in the morning? Or if that's bad, I'm also convenient in the afternoon.

Eric: Quick fix: we'd say I'm also free in the afternoon, or the afternoon works too. Convenient is for the time, not the person.

Rachel: Oh! So I say the time is convenient, not that I am convenient.

Eric: Exactly. Like, is ten convenient for you? The time is convenient, and you come after for.

像「Is ten convenient for you?」——方便的是時間,人放在 for 後面。)

Rachel: Got it. Is ten convenient for you, then?

Eric: Ten works. Let's grab the small room on the second floor. It's more convenient, right next to our desks.

Rachel: Perfect. And if something comes up, I'll just say that doesn't work for me, instead of I'm not convenient.

Eric: Now you sound like you've been here for years.

Dialogue

Sophia: Okay, what is he yelling? 'Six seven'? Is that a score? A time?

David: Ha — neither. It's a meme. 'Six seven' doesn't actually mean anything. Kids just say it.

Sophia: It has to mean something. Why the hand thing?

David: It came from a song, then basketball videos, then a kid screaming it at a game. Now it's just… random. The gesture is part of the bit.

Sophia: So if I ask him what it means, I'm the uncool one.

David: Exactly. No cap — the less you ask, the cooler you look.

Sophia: 'No cap'? Okay, that one I actually want to learn.

    (「No cap」?

David: 'No cap' means 'for real, I'm not lying.' And if someone has rizz, they've got charm — like, smooth with people.

Sophia: And 'chud'? He called his friend a chud yesterday.

David: That's just 'loser,' from an old movie. So: six seven means nothing, no cap means for real, rizz is charm, chud is loser. You're set.
