News flash that everyone should know about. EQUIFAX announces they were
hacked by Cyber Thieves
in 2017
Hi everybody? I hope you are having a great day. This is Dug Barnett and welcome to Episode #002 of my 3rd30 podcasts. This episode is a News Bulletin about Identity Theft rather than a typical podcast. Everyone should know about this. I stumbled across it in my research for one of my podcasts and wanted you to know about it. We need to find out why this wasn’t announced to everyone who had their information stolen. Remember: The purpose of 3rd30 is to help people learn how to plan for and enjoy the best 30 years of their life.
What happened?
EQUIFAX, the credit reporting company headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., located in 24 countries, and that is one of three
such companies that track our credit scores has
announced that they were hacked
by cyber thieves
between May and
July of this year,
2017 and millions of
records (some
estimates put it at
over 143 million customers) were stolen containing our personal
information.
Most of the consumer information accessed includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and in some instances, driver’s license numbers (“Consumer Notice – Cybersecurity Incident & Important Consumer Information | Equifax,” n.d.).
Identity Theft Not Reported
Equally disturbing, although EQUIFAX became aware of the breach on July 29th they did not report it until September 7th. They are not alone.
According to a recent survey, nearly 40% of in-house attorneys and general counsel fail to disclose security issues to their board (“38% of Attorneys Fail to Disclose Cyber security Issues to Board,” n.d.).
I actually worked for a company that was hacked and we, the employees, were told we couldn’t say anything to anybody. This is unacceptable and should be illegal. We will talk more about this problem and what you can do to protect yourself in an upcoming episode.
What should you do?
