Dr. Bradley Block interviews Dr. Jonathan Stea about his book Mind the Science, which explores how pseudoscience impacts healthcare through the wellness industry and the anti-psychiatry movement. Dr. Stea traces the anti-psychiatry movement’s origins to the 1960s, when it emerged in response to shortcomings in psychiatric practice. However, he argues that it has since devolved into a pseudoscientific ideology perpetuating misinformation.

The conversation delves into how the wellness industry capitalizes on pseudoscientific ideas, exaggerating the role of personal responsibility and natural remedies while sowing distrust in traditional medicine. Dr. Stea shines a light on misleading claims in alternative medicine, from dubious naturopathic treatments to the misrepresentation of indigenous practices.

Dr. Stea’s book uses humor and clear examples to help readers recognize and avoid pseudoscience. He stresses the need for honesty, informed consent, and understanding of cultural beliefs in healthcare. Quoting Brandolini’s Law, he warns that it takes much more effort to debunk false information than to create it, urging healthcare professionals to stay vigilant.

Bio

Dr. Jonathan Stea is a practicing clinical psychologist and an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary. With a specialization in assessing and treating concurrent addiction and mental health disorders, he has earned accolades for his expertise, including twice receiving the University of Calgary's Award for Excellence in Clinical Supervision.

In addition to his clinical and academic roles, Dr. Stea is a dedicated science communicator. He actively works to debunk pseudoscience and misinformation, especially in the mental health field. This mission aligns with his commitment to the Canadian Code of Ethics for Psychologists, which emphasizes promoting evidence-based care and countering harmful misinformation.

Dr. Stea is also a co-editor of “Investigating Clinical Psychology: Pseudoscience, Fringe Science, and Controversies” and the author of “Mind the Science”, which explores the intersection of the wellness industry, the anti-psychiatry movement, and pseudoscience.
