How much should you save in a 529 plan, and what happens if you save too much? In this episode of The White Coat Investor Podcast, Dr. Jim Dahle answers listener questions about 529 college savings plans, including how they work, why they can be such a powerful tool for physician families, and how to avoid some of the tax complications that can come from getting too clever with college funding. Jim starts with the basics of 529 plans, including state tax benefits, tax-free growth, qualified withdrawals, and how long-term compounding can dramatically increase the value of early contributions. He also explains what happens when a 529 is overfunded, including changing beneficiaries, using the money for future generations, and the newer ability to roll some 529 money into a Roth IRA. The discussion then gets more complicated. Jim addresses using appreciated investments to pay for college, the 0% long-term capital gains bracket, dependent status, support requirements, the kiddie tax, and gift-tax considerations. He also shares a personal example of over-optimizing a daughter's UTMA account and discovering an unexpected state tax bill. Finally, Jim explains how families can continue contributing to a 529 while a child is in college, how he handles withdrawals and receipts, and what alternatives make sense when a family is already on track to fully fund college. A 529 is a powerful account when you know the money is going toward education. The goal isn't to maximize every possible tax trick. It's to save enough, use the tax benefits available to you, and keep your financial life simple. How does an OB-GYN earning a fairly typical physician income build a net worth of more than $20 million? In this episode of the Milestones to Millionaire Podcast, Dr. Jim Dahle talks with Carlos, an OB-GYN who has spent 25 years steadily building wealth through disciplined investing, consistent saving, and thoughtful real estate investments. Carlos explains how he and his wife started by saving roughly 30% of their income and investing in broad stock market index funds. As their career progressed, they expanded into commercial real estate, purchased medical office buildings, and eventually added short-term rental properties to create additional cash flow. One of the biggest milestones came after refinancing their home in 2011 and using $100,000 to purchase a Florida foreclosure near the bottom of the housing market. Through appreciation and multiple 1031 exchanges, that investment ultimately grew into approximately $3.6 million while allowing them to defer capital gains taxes. They also discuss balancing a portfolio between equities and real estate, using leverage responsibly, building income-producing properties, estate planning, and preparing for retirement after decades of disciplined investing. This conversation is a reminder that extraordinary wealth rarely comes from chasing the next hot investment. It is far more often the result of earning well, investing consistently, remaining patient, and allowing compounding to work over many years. This podcast is sponsored by Bob Bhayani at Protuity. Can a pharmacist build a $10 million net worth without an extraordinary income? In this episode of the Milestones to Millionaire Podcast, Dr. Jim Dahle talks with a retired pharmacist who spent four decades building wealth through disciplined saving, long-term investing, and thoughtful real estate purchases. She shares how living below her means from the beginning of her career allowed her to become financially independent at age 52, even though she continued working for several more years by choice. Along the way, she navigated a divorce, cared for aging parents, invested through the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID market decline, and never abandoned her long-term investment plan. The conversation explores the power of compounding, balancing index fund investing with rental real estate, using market downturns as buying opportunities, and lessons learned while managing her parents' estate. She also explains why financial literacy within families matters and how open conversations can make estate transitions much smoother. Whether you're a physician, pharmacist, or any high-income professional, this episode demonstrates that building substantial wealth is less about chasing extraordinary returns and more about remaining disciplined over decades. Time in the market, consistent investing, and living below your means can create opportunities that are difficult to appreciate until compounding has decades to work. Is it actually too late to catch up if you did not start investing seriously until later in your career? In this episode, Dr. Jim Dahle answers a listener's honest question about starting late and wanting to retire within a couple of years. He walks through why there is no real shortcut, the math works the same for everyone, but there are still concrete levers you can pull: tightening your budget, making sure your accounts and investments are actually optimized, reconsidering your asset allocation, and in some cases taking on a reasonable amount of leverage. Jim also covers tools that can help someone with limited time before retirement stretch their income further, including single premium immediate annuities and TIPS ladders, both of which can lock in guaranteed income and reduce sequence of returns risk. He explains why working just a few extra years can dramatically improve nearly every part of the retirement equation at once, more savings, more compound growth, higher Social Security payments, and a shorter retirement to fund. The episode also covers a contract review correction, an introduction to turnkey real estate investing for out of state properties, and a detailed breakdown of tax loss harvesting, including when long short direct indexing might or might not be worth the added complexity. Starting late does not mean it is too late. It just means the plan has to be built around the time and resources you actually have. What changed for medical and dental students now that federal student loan borrowing has a hard cap, and what should you do if you're already deep into school? In this episode, Dr. Jim Dahle breaks down the new private student loan landscape following the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, sharing real stories from students facing six-figure federal loan limits, cosigner requirements, and double-digit private loan rates. He then works through listener questions spanning several major financial planning decisions. Topics include how to properly account for rental income, real estate debt funds, and syndications when calculating financial independence, and whether a couple sitting on a historic stock market run should shift to a more conservative portfolio. Jim also walks through ten different ways parents can help a child buy their first home, from outright gifts and family trusts to family offset mortgages and cosigning, ranking each option from best to worst based on tax efficiency, risk, and family dynamics. The episode closes with an in-depth look at the decision between one income and two income households, including the tax mechanics that make it more affordable than it looks, the career risks of stepping away from a job long-term, and how to think about financial protection and power dynamics when one spouse stays home. Across every topic, the same principle applies: run the numbers, get clear on your values, and make decisions based on your actual life rather than what everyone else seems to be doing.
