Chief Deputy Christopher Allen submitted his resignation from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office on Monday, alleging in a scathing letter that Sheriff Garry McFadden created a hostile work environment through "abusive and narcissistic behaviors."
Allen, who served as chief deputy sheriff, cited a fundamental misalignment of values and morals with McFadden's leadership in his Aug. 18 resignation letter addressed to the sheriff. His resignation comes less than a year after former Chief Deputy Kevin Canty stepped down, accusing McFadden of running the agency like a "third-world dictatorship." McFadden issued an apology for using "racially charged" language in a video amid the controversy surrounding Canty's resignation.

Lowering the speed limit sounds simple — but the process behind it is anything but. Some communities are pushing to lower speed limits, but old rules are getting in the way.
For decades, speed limits have been based on something called the 85% rule. It’s the idea that limits should match how fast most drivers are already going. It suggests that a road's posted speed should be tied to the 15th-fastest vehicle out of every 100 traveling in free-flowing traffic, rounded to the nearest 5 mph increment.

As millions of Americans take to the skies during the busiest summer travel season on record, flight attendants at PSA Airlines say they're being left behind — and they’re ready to make their voices heard.
On Monday, Aug. 18, at 1 p.m., PSA Airlines flight attendants will hold a demonstration outside Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) at the Intersection of Wilkinson Boulevard and the airport entrance as part of a nationwide Day of Action. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' Charlotte Field Division, along with federal prosecutors, police, and gun industry advocates, has launched a major public awareness campaign in Charlotte to crack down on illegal gun purchases, warning residents that buying firearms for someone who cannot legally purchase them could result in federal prison time.
The month-long "Don't Lie for the Other Guy™" campaign, now in its 25th year, targets straw purchases, or when someone buys a gun for another person who cannot legally do so themselves. The initiative brings together the ATF's Charlotte Field Division, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Tensions ran high at Tuesday's Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board meeting as dozens of community members voiced fierce opposition to the district's policies regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on school campuses, just days before the start of the new school year.
The emotionally charged meeting grew so contentious that security escorted one woman from the room during the public comment period, where nearly a dozen speakers expressed concerns about student safety and the district's cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) defended her use of a slur for transgender people during a town hall in Rock Hill on Monday.
After a constituent asked Mace about her position on Planned Parenthood funding, healthcare, and birth control options, the representative got into a heated exchange with her, telling the resident to "say hi to the t***** for me" as she walked out of the event. Mace was referring to the protesters outside of her event, whom she called "lunatics" at one point.
When asked about a LGBTQ+ issue after the event, Mace told reporters that "gays need to divorce the t*****." She said transgender women should not be in women's spaces, including dorms and bathrooms.

WCNC Charlotte received messages from citizens that said the shots were heard toward the end of the event held at the C.W. Williams Community Health Center along Wilkinson Boulevard. Medic confirmed it did not respond to the scene, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said nobody was hurt. However, CMPD did not share details with WCNC Charlotte about any arrests made after the fact or what may have led up to the shooting.
Jail records show a woman was arrested around the time of the incident. She was charged with "going armed to terror of people" and carrying a concealed handgun, both misdemeanor charges. Court records say she scared over 200 people in the incident. However, police have not confirmed that this arrest is connected.

First Baptist Charlotte is welcoming mourners Friday as the city gathers to remember a trailblazer and public servant, Vicki Foster. She was the highest‑ranking female officer in Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) history when she retired.
She passed away on July 25, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Foster’s journey began in 1991 when she joined CMPD as a patrol officer. Over nearly three decades, she ascended through the ranks, ultimately becoming assistant chief -- the highest-ranking female officer in department history -- before her retirement in January 2020.
