Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and several city council members held a news conference Wednesday to forcefully reject allegations of "unethical, immoral, and illegal activities" made by Council member Victoria Watlington.
Those allegations came after a reported settlement with CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings that was reached during a closed-door session on Monday.
"These allegations are unfounded," Lyles stated at the beginning of the conference. "If she has any proof, she needs to provide that to the city attorney's office who is duty-bound to investigate."
The council's private talks involving public dollars follow former Council member Tariq Bokhari's public and private war against the police chief. Lyles said Wednesday Bokhari's intent was to damage the chief's reputation and end his career.

The REAL ID deadline is here.
Starting on Wednesday, May 7, Americans will need to have federally compliant identification to pass through airport security and access federal facilities.
Don’t have a REAL ID yet? You can still fly, for now, but expect extra screening at TSA.
The Department of Homeland Security said on Tuesday that travelers without a REAL ID this week should be able to fly but should be prepared for extra scrutiny. Those without a REAL ID "may be diverted to a different line, have an extra step", the head of the DHS said Tuesday.

North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Allison Riggs would retain her seat on the state’s highest court under a new federal court order that said efforts to invalidate some absentee ballots are unconstitutional.
On Monday, a federal judge ordered the North Carolina State Board of Elections to certify the Democrat's narrow victory in the November election. But he paused the ruling for seven days to give Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin time to appeal.

More than 10,000 voices including students, families, and staff gave feedback through surveys, focus groups, and interviews. It was all part of a survey on the vision on the future of artificial intelligence in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Of those surveyed, 79% said they’ve already used AI at home, and nearly half say they used AI at work. But when it comes to classrooms, opinions are divided — with school staff more cautious and district leaders more hopeful.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department unveiled a series of tributes to honor four law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty one year ago.
CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks, and N.C. Department of Adult Correction Investigators Alden Elliott and Samuel Poloche were killed on April 29, 2024.
"No singular act can fully honor such profound loss," said CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings in Saturday's announcement. "Instead, we have deliberately chosen multiple avenues to solemnly remember these fallen officers, to vibrantly celebrate their lives, to unite as a community in heartfelt tribute and to demonstrate the enduring strength that has defined us since that devastating day."
The four officers were killed during what became one of the deadliest days in Charlotte law enforcement history. On that day, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, which included officers from multiple agencies, were serving a warrant at a home on Galway Drive in east Charlotte when they were met with active gunfire from a suspect inside the house.
Eight law enforcement officers were injured in the ambush. Three task force officers — Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks and N.C. Department of Adult Correction Investigators William Elliott and Samuel Poloche — were pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the shooting. CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer died later that night, according to CMPD statements at the time.

The second phase of the Re!magine Spectrum Center project will be revealed Monday morning at a media event in Uptown Charlotte. Among the expected upgrades are wider concourses, more seating, and new design features that give fans better views of the court — even from the concessions area.
It’s all part of a multi-million dollar effort to modernize the arena, which sees over a million visitors each year. The Hornets say it’s not just a facelift — it’s about rethinking how fans experience sports, concerts, and live events.

The Carolina Panthers chose Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan with the eighth pick in Thursday's NFL Draft.
McMillan was third in FBS with 1,319 receiving yards at 15.7 yards per reception. He set the Wildcats' school record with 3,423 career receiving yards and was a first-team AP All-American this year.
Most people thought the Panthers would pick a player on the defensive side of the ball, but the team opted to take McMillan, adding another weapon for quarterback Bryce Young.
