North Carolina State Auditor Dave Boliek is looking into an alleged settlement between the city of Charlotte and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings, according to a letter sent to Mayor Vi Lyles.
In the letter, Boliek said there's a possibility that as much as $100,000 to $300,000 in public money may have been given to Jennings for a legal settlement by the City Council. Charlotte leaders have yet to confirm the settlement, citing employee privacy laws.

Charlotte City Council named Edwin Peacock III the new representative for District 6 during a meeting on Monday, ending a weeks-long selection process triggered by the departure of Tariq Bokhari.
Bokhari stepped down from the role more than a month ago after being appointed deputy administrator of the Federal Transit Administration by the Trump administration.
Monday's vote came down to a tie between Peacock, a former at-large council member, and Krista Bokhari, Tariq Bokhari's wife. Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles broke the tie and voted for Peacock.

The owner of a Dilworth home that was destroyed during a fire that investigators say was intentionally set was arrested in Chicago, records show.
Michael Edward Barnette was taken into custody as a fugitive from justice on May 10, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office in Illinois. A spokesperson for the sheriff's office said any further questions related to the case would be answered by the Chicago Police Department. The Charlotte Fire Department said Barnette was in the process of being extradited to North Carolina.

The plan involves constructing 62 high-end homes on nearly 167 acres along Weddington Road. While some residents acknowledge that development is inevitable, many are calling for a more responsible approach. The proposed project includes plans for a community wastewater treatment plant, which has raised environmental concerns. Opponents argue that the system poses risks to local wildlife and water quality.

Just days after the City of Charlotte agreed on a potential settlement with the chief of police, the organization that represents more than 1,700 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers is considering taking a vote of no confidence against Chief Johnny Jennings.
The city's reported closed-door settlement came in response to a war former Council member Tariq Bokhari waged against the chief over his initial refusal to let patrol officers wear outer carrier vests. As WCNC Charlotte reported Wednesday night, that war included strongly worded text messages to the chief from Bokhari that said he'd push for his termination and cripple his legacy.
The Fraternal Order of Police sent an email to its members to survey their thoughts, asking them whether they support moving forward with a symbolic vote of no confidence against the chief. The survey also gives them the option to share additional information supporting their response. Simply put, the survey is a preliminary vote to better understand the full membership's thoughts on the issue before formally taking action.
