  • NC Senate passes bill requiring sheriff-ICE cooperation

The North Carolina Senate passed legislation Tuesday that would require county sheriffs statewide to work more closely with federal immigration officials, sending the measure to Gov. Josh Stein's desk.

The Criminal Illegal Alien Enforcement Act passed the House in April and now awaits the governor's signature after clearing the Senate on Tuesday. A vote count is not immediately available.

House Bill 318 would mandate local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, including sharing information and notifying ICE when someone they're monitoring is about to be released from custody.

The bill significantly expands cooperation requirements from earlier legislation, requiring local law enforcement to work with federal officials on all felonies and Class A1 misdemeanors, rather than just specific categories of crimes.

  • Illegal street takeover leads to shooting, Pineville police say

A shooting left one person hurt during an illegal street takeover early Sunday morning on Park Road, according to the Pineville Police Department.

Several cars were doing burnouts and "donuts" in the Park 51 Shops parking lot around 4 a.m., police said. Multiple 911 calls reported a large crowd, vehicles blocking traffic and possible gunshots. When police arrived, they found evidence of a street takeover and learned that a physical fight had broken out among several people.

During the fight, a suspect pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots, police said. At least one bullet hit a vehicle, while another hit a person in the leg. The victim was taken to Atrium Health Main with non-life-threatening injuries and is listed in stable condition.
