Landlords in South Carolina have filed a staggering 400,000 evictions between March 2020 and February 2024.
That’s all according to newly released data from the Civil Court Data Initiative, a government website collecting nationwide eviction data.
In York County alone, there were 600 eviction filings in February 2024 and just over 20,000 since March 2020, according to the eviction tracker.
The ACLU and the NAACP took legal action in 2022, suing the state to collect newly published court records. This initiative led to the creation of the first major database, allowing for the updating of eviction numbers in weeks rather than years.

More kids are becoming addicted to nicotine, with school districts like Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools reporting 758 documented incidents of use of a vaping device last school year. Some students say that number may not include the many kids who vape in hideaway spots.
"It's 6 o’clock in the morning and when I go in the bathroom, it's like 30 people in there vaping, they're tweaking," recent grad Jayden Thomas said.
Vaping is an issue state and local leaders are working to tackle, with Mecklenburg County public health leaders assessing 228 local tobacco retailers to find solutions.

A Charlotte woman and her two young children were found more than a week after they were reported missing, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Police charged Benjamin Joseph Taylor, 35, with 3 counts of murder and one count of concealment of death.
Taylor was found on Saturday and arrested in Imperial County, California. He will be held in the Imperial County jail, awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
"I'm often asked what the most difficult part of my job as police chief is and without hesitation, my answer is always seeing families grieving the loss of their loved one after a violent crime--especially when small children are involved," CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said in a statement following the arrest.

The cause of Watts’ death is listed as “undetermined” in the autopsy, which medical personnel conducted on Aug. 29, 2023.
The autopsy said Watts' body was “skeletonized" and “severely decomposed." It said Watts was also missing bones and teeth. She was 39.
Family members have been waiting on the autopsy report for months. For them, it was the last piece of a puzzle -- but, for the Watts family, this last piece is a mystery in itself.
"We are angry and devastated, we have so many questions," Watts' younger sister Tammy Utley said about the report.

The City of Gastonia is having a third-party study done that analyzes barriers to housing and gives in-depth recommendations on how to remove them.
The goal is to implement city policies that create more affordable options and address disparities in housing. However, the same study was done five years ago and according to the research, the city hasn't addressed some of the identified disparities from 2019.
Gastonia City Council’s Housing Committee received an update Monday on the federally required housing study that’s done every five years. It found five main issues that are making it harder for people to find fair housing in Gastonia.

North Carolina will become the latest state to legalize mobile sports betting, starting at noon on Monday. Estimates suggest online betting will bring in nearly $65 million in additional tax revenue for North Carolina in the first fiscal year.
As part of the legislation, additional resources were directed toward the NC Department of Health and Human Resources to help those who might struggle with gambling addiction after Monday's rollout.
"Gambling can affect anyone. It affects folks from all walks of life, all communities," Kelly Crosbie, director of the division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services, said.
NCDHHS launched the website morethanagame.nc.gov to offer resources and support to those struggling with a gambling problem.

South Carolinians may soon be able to openly carry a weapon.
It comes as both state House and Senate lawmakers officially pass the Second Amendment Preservation Act, also known as South Carolina Constitutional Carry. The bill allows anyone who can legally own a gun to carry it openly.
Advocating for its passage on the House floor Tuesday was Republican Representative Brandon Cox of Berkeley County. He sponsored the bill and said more than 20 states around the country already have similar laws.
