Nazaré in Portugal is home to the biggest wave on the planet. And Canadian-American Jake Smith, at 16, smashed the ceiling on the possible when he rode a towering 50ft icy face earlier this year, becoming one of the youngest big wave surfers in history.

Beaming bright-eyed and infinitely optimistic, we’ve never met a teen of such steely self-belief and such incredibly humble beginnings - but as we stepped back to understand how, our respect and love for this young man just bloomed.
