Homelessness Week begins 4 August 2025 with the theme 'Action Now' and 8CCC's Kate Lyons- Dawson spoke with Annie Taylor, CEO of NT Shelter about the week's events in Mparntwe.  The NT has the worst rates of homelessness in Australia and 50% are 25 and younger.

8CCC Big Brekky hosted George Ivens to talk about her debut album Ocean Stereo, the feature album this week. George spoke with Kate Lyons-Dawson about the production with Elephant Sound's Jez Conlon, the musical journey she's been on, as well as her life as an artist. The cover for Ocean Stereo is one of her originals and she's exhibiting in South Australia with SALA - South Australian Living Artists.

In the era of Ronald Reagan's Star Wars, Pine Gap facility was expanding. Four men kept a US military Galaxy plane from landing at the Alice Springs airport by riding their bicycles on the tarmac.

This morning on the Big Brekky Show, he shared his reflection on the last forty years. Now an adjunct Professor at University of New England, Bob continues his activism in Central Australia, highlighting the anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist dimension of campaigns against Pine Gap and other US bases in the Asia-Pacific region and the solidarity that this movement sought to build with Indigenous and colonised peoples in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

Rallies out on the road into Pine Gap are currently planned fortnightly, the next one on Sunday 20 July from 10am.

Tim Whiting had a call with 8CCC Big Brekky to tell listeners about this weekend's events. As part of a not-for-profit community organisation, The Brahma Kumaris, he has taught and studied meditation and the supporting philosophy for 26 years.Starting in India in the 1930's the Brahma Kumaris (BKs for short) are a global community who teach meditation and self development. They recently celebrated 50 years of service in Australia. The BKs are the largest spiritual group in the world led by women. Their programs are run on a not for profit basis, funded by voluntary contributions.
Tim has arranged a couple of talks to take place in July at Unit 10/10 Smith Street in Ciccone, free to attend. The topics are; The Gift of the Present (Saturday 19th July from 2:30pm to 4:30pm) and Soul Purpose, (Sunday 20th July 11:30am to 1:30pm). Each of the sessions will include a talk and guided meditation.

Tonight the Walk-in Cinema at Watch This Space includes a screening of trailers and shorts concerning momentum, opacity and translation including works by Katarina Zdjelar (Serbia), Alejandro González Iñárritu (Mexico), Simon Ward (Aotearoa), Beth Sometimes (Mparntwe) and Ernabella Video and Television (Pukatja, SA) curated by beth. She spoke this morning on the Big Brekky Show about the event, as well as her wider PhD work.

What Happened At The Library is a research-based film project considering how How It Feels is related to What We Know. It revolves around the idea of the library as an imperfect archive and public institution subject to the unruly forces at play in Mparntwe Alice Springs. The project plays with language and the interpretation of language to build a story about neoliberal public management, institutional racism and the liberatory fantasies and possibilities of reading.

Launching a regular commitment to highlighting housing and architecture unique to the Centre, 8CCC has teamed up with the local design legends who present Mparntwe Speaks, a series of local events and talks at the Old Hartley Street School. This week, Owen Kelly from Dogspike Design and Architecture joined 8CCC's Kate Lyons- Dawson for the inaugural talk, focused on housing guru Paul Pholeros. A gifted architect, he understood very early in his career the impacts that living environments have on health conditions and this led to Healthabitat. His work continues since his death, thorough Healthabitat and the Paul Pholeros Foundation.

In the lead up to the Regional Architecture Association experience in September the series will continue.
