Osheaga is August 3rd to 5th at Parc Jean Drapeau, music starts at 13h each day. Check out osheaga.com for more info and tickets.

  • The Planet Smashers – GPYS 161

This episode is so special that it’s a day early! (Incidentally, that’s the kind of perk you can normally pick up on our Patreon) Why is it a day early? Because it’s an extra special episode and we want to make sure you have time to hear it before ’77 Montreal hits on Friday. We have Matt Smasher and Dave Smasher (their real names) from The Planet Smashers! The boys talk about tales from the road, breaking their necks, breaking their backs (and getting said back realigned through the magic of roller derby) and more! Check out our audio preview of ’77 Montreal here and we’ll see you at Parc Jean Drapeau this Friday!

The Planet Smashers will hit the stage at ’77 Montreal at 3:45 pm. Tickets and info here.

As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

  • Heavy Montreal 2018 – Preview Podcast – Sunday

Last year, metalheads all over the city lamented the absence of Heavy Montreal. But there was a promise, the promise of a triumphant return of the festival in 2018. And return it did, like the rising phoenix from the ashes of a burnt out viking longboat (or something metal like that).

With headliners like Limp Bizkit, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie the festival has the big names lined up and ready to go. With more progressive acts like Gojira and Allegaeon, 80’s throwbacks and even a few comedy bands (looking in your direction Ultra Vomit) and the return of the wrestling spectacle that is Heavy Mania it seems like there will be something for every type of metal fan at Parc Jean Drapeau this coming weekend.

Sarah and I went through the lineup of each day and picked 5 acts that we are extra excited for. Check out the Saturday edition of this series here.

So listen now to find out who made our list for Sunday at Heavy Montreal and enjoy the show!

NOTE: This podcast was obviously recorded before the news had broke that Avenged Sevenfold had to cancel their performance, which is a huge bummer since they were one of the acts I was extremely excited to check out.

Heavy Montreal is July 28-29th at Parc Jean Drapeau, music starts at 13h each day. Check out heavymontreal.com for more info and tickets.

All audio clips are copyright of their respective owners and used solely with the intention of promoting Heavy Montreal.

Hello there and welcome back fans of the Fantasia International Film Festival!

As you have no doubt noticed by now we are very much in the thick of Fantasia and Sophie and Phil have been going to a wide variety of movies at Montreal’s premiere genre film festival. • 9ES162: Pure Realization

Does Stan Rogers have that much of a place in my heart?  You’re goddamned right he does.  This one time, at vampire (ellipsis), I’m pretty sure I sang the whole thing to try to make fun of someone who told me that they were a pirate.  Context:  I was playing a Malkavian who was very much trapped in his own head, and after hearing that so and so was a pirate I just started singing.  We’re Sabbat so like, if the pack Malkavian decides it’s singing time then it’s singing time.  Barret’s Privateers is really really long when you sing all the choruses and people got really uncomfortable when everyone realized holy shit he’s really trying to do the whole thing.  It’s like… do we humor him?  How can we not do this?  Good times, more or less exactly why you play Malkavians.

Years later I stumbled on a documentary about the Franklin expedition and of course the good bits of the documentary have wind blown arctic nature shots with The Northwest Passage playing over it and decided to read up on ole Stan.  He died on the Air Canada flight that stopped smoking from being a thing on planes.  Pretty horrible end for what could have been a lifetime of good music.

Man what a fucking bummer.  See what happens when I don’t write the blogroll for one week?

  • ’77 Montreal Preview Podcast – A 40 Year Old Man Rediscovers Punk

’77 Montreal is right around the corner. You know that corner that is 9 days away. That corner. Scott and I will be checking out the 2nd Edition of Montreal’s celebration of all things “punk” on behalf of the website and we had a fun idea.

Scott has always had a kind of “on again, off again” relationship with punk rock music. So we thought it would be fun for him to go through the entirety of the ’77 Montreal lineup and pick out a few of the acts he was excited to see. That meant listening to a lot of music he had never heard before and guess what Mikey? He liked it!

Then we recorded a podcast about the bands he was most excited to see hit the stage on July 27th at Parc Jean-Drapeau!

See you in the pit! (We won’t be in the pit, we’ll be standing sensibly back from the pit, watching you like the old men we now are). Enjoy the show!

’77 Montreal is July 27th at Parc Jean Drapeau, music starts at 13h. Check out 77montreal.com for more info and tickets.
