It was the early 2000’s and Richard Petit had a problem. What do you do when you’re a francophone singer/songwriter and the music industry just isn’t paying the bills? Well, you could go work at St-Hubert BBQ, or you could mount one of the most highly praised Pink Floyd shows in the world. I think anyone who has had the opportunity to see The Wall Live Extravaganza is glad that Richard isn’t seating them before a meal of rotisserie chicken.
The creator of that amazing show has mounted another tribute to the seminal British rock band and it’s playing one night only here in Montreal. Space: The Best of Pink Floyd “version symphonique”. If you were lucky enough to have seen a previous rendition of this show, this time around its accompanied by 37 symphonic musicians.
Richard talks about the show, his love of Pink Floyd, and more! Enjoy the show!
Space: The Best of Pink Floyd Show Version Symphonique is one night on at Place Des Arts, December 8th. More info here.
Follow Richard on Twitter: @ritchipetard (where we took that photo from) and check out thewallx.com for more on the unique Pink Floyd experiences that Richard creates.
As always, a big thank you to the providers of our theme song: Leighland Beckman and Aural Turpitude!

Boy I get so excited talking about Dune I forget what I wanted to say and run over my own ideas.
It’s rare that an art enters your life at a critical period, is in fact widely regarded as great, and then grows with age, so that one doesn’t have to regret the nostalgia tainted love. Like, I was way into Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness: it was my first CD; it got a lot of rotation, but listening back to Billy Corgan’s whines as an adult I cannot but be certain: there is the music of a teenage boy. Sorry Billy.
Not so with Dune. On this last reread I think I have absorbed some of the more structural aspects of the work. Where before the complexity overwhelmed maybe now I see the basic scaffold the sci-fi is clinging to. I use basic here not in the pejorative sense, but more to imply the fundamental Vonnegut-“all stories follow the same basic shape” shape. This isn’t a bad thing, more of a broadening sense of appreciation for the storytelling devices. Like I failed to clearly say in the podcast there’s a core story that’s approachable and recognizable hiding behind the sandworms and witches and time piercing space Jesus. Rare that a book still presents undiscovered country after a half-dozen rereads.
I hope that wasn’t too pretentious.
Anyway, maybe there will come a time when I will look back on the titanic cynicism of the book, the venom directed at the modern institutions of governance (and messiahs!), and remind myself that cynicism is an expression of naivete and I will be past it like the Litany says. Or maybe I’ll actually enjoy the 3rd book?
Probably not on both counts.

The question, Scott, is which one of us made it out?

It’s well established that Alex Rose is a friend of the show. Not only has he been on GPYS proper 4 times now, he’s also featured on a bunch of our past Fantasia coverage. Why? Because he’s s a big shot over out at CULT Montreal when it comes to writing the words about the movies. I feel like Alex has a pretty open ended invitation to be on the show whenever Walter wants to talk about movies. And, since it’s Halloween, we talk about horror movies. Alex has seen a bunch of movies (but not Suspira) that aren’t even out yet and we try to get him to talk about them. We also talk about Hereditary because it was great. Enjoy the show! Happy something something spooky. Consider this your 2018 Halloween Horror Movie Guide. Are you considering? You’d better be.
Be sure to check out Walter’s “NIGHT Fight: the Final Halloween” this coming Saturday night at the Artloft. Trust him, it’s the last one.
Walter and Leighland are going to be hosting NIGHT FIGHT: The Final Halloween on October 20th at the Art Loft so you should probably check that out to kick off your seasonal celebrations.

The really awful part is that I don’t think any of them were phoning it in, either. They were trying. Many, many people worked really, really hard on this thing, and it was just a nightmare.
Dark Shadows [2012] was based on a TV show that ran from 1966 until 1971. This is the piece that I was missing on the podcast. It had 1225 episodes. Breathe that right on in. Twelve hundred episodes. It was a daytime TV soap opera kind of thing but kind of Addams Familyeqsque with vampires and werewolves and melodrama and whatnot. So saying that this thing came from the imagination of Tim Burton is hardly fair.
In fact, playing Barnabas Collins was a dream of Johnny Depp’s, him being a massive fan of the original show. He worked for a decade to get this thing made. Roped Burton and Elfman (haha he did score it I just blocked it out) into making it with him. So this thing is all on Depp.
I honestly feel bad for him.

Welcome back to Montreal’s boyishly charming podcast, Go Plug Yourself! This week we welcome back two of the funniest people in Montreal: Troy Stark and Vance Michel. These guys are both bonafide hustlers in the Montreal comedy scene and have a ton of stuff coming up in the next few months.
Vance and Walter run The World’s Smallest Open Mic every Monday (an idea that was actually born the last time Vance was on the show) and Troy is arranging things over at The MTL Grand Open at McKibbins (more info on Perfect Bite Productions Facebook page).
Enjoy the show and support local comedy!

As long as he kills the half who pee on unwilling people and not by making another movie.
Think about what a nice trade that would be. The end of Infinity War would forever remain a mystery, unless you wanted to read the books or more likely don’t care, and in exchange the bad half of Hollywood is gone. Not too shabby. Unless of course being a sexual predator is somehow linked to the quality of your artistic output. I doubt it, but I guess I only ever listened to like 3 of the trapped in the closet jibberjabbers.
There’s a temptation there, treading into the genius->madness Rubicon, where you might imagine that the tides of suffering vomited by the villains of the world has a net positive impact. A unified Europe without Hitler? Somewhere Over The Rainbow without barbiturates and amphetamines?
Yeah fuck that. All that is nonsense. We never see what could have been.
