  • It's Just Cancer with Sophie Woodcock

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

Today I have the lovely Sophie Woodcock on to discuss her experience with cancer.  Sophie is a great personal friend of mine, animal advocate, and cancer warrior, as well as one of my clients.  Today we discuss the emotional and mental impact of a diagnosis and what friends and family can do to help.

In our experience, we have found that about half of your friends will disappear when they hear your diagnosis.  The other half will be terrified and run for the hills, but others will step up in unexpected ways.  Since we are both animal rescue activists, we have found that animals are great listeners, supporters, and friends when it comes to being stuck at home with illness.

Sophie's advice for accelerating physical and emotional wealth is mindfulness based healing.  When faced with a scary diagnosis, it's important to acknowledge how you feel about it and make peace with how you feel.  It's okay to feel the sadness, but it's also okay to feel happiness.  The bad days make the good days that much better.

I asked Sophie, "What would be the top three things that people could do to help you once you've got a diagnosis?"

    1. Be there. You don't have to talk about cancer, just be there and watch a movie, or go for a drive, invite them on walks.  It makes it worse to not be invited.
    2. Don't be scared of the word Cancer.  It's just a word. I'm having an ankle operation that is going to be far more debilitating for me than my cancer has been, but it doesn't terrify people.
    3. Include people in your life who are dealing with illness, disability, heart issues, cancer, or mental health concerns.  Let them be the judge of what they are and aren't capable of.

I titled this, "it's only cancer." And I know a few of you probably thought, Oh, she must be mad because you know, cancer is such a scary thing. But if we've learned anything from this episode, it's that it is just a label as with any other medical label, it's a diagnosis. It's a name. It's not your life. And Sophie and I've talked about this at length, that the person who has the cancer is still the person, they are not the cancer. Treat them as the person that you knew before they got the diagnosis.

Having this diagnosis has given Sophie the permission to enjoy every day and really go after the items on her bucket list, like the trip to Kenya that she took last year, rather than waiting until retirement.

  • Building Health and Wealth Out Of Disaster with Cammy Wang

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

Today we are joined by Cammy Wang. Cammy is a lifelong educator with a highly diverse academic and career background. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies. She has her master's in education and a juris doctorate. I'll have to ask what that is. Sounds very interesting. Cammy's broad career interests have given her the opportunity to work in many fields including education, law, financial services, business, government, entertainment and hospitality. Her roles as a teacher and educational career counselor have been deeply rewarding for her in guiding people to find their pathways to success. As a financial strategist and marketing director with the World Financial Group for the past five years, Cammy is continuously serving families and small businesses to help them build a solid financial foundation. Since 2016, she has created and delivered a series of financial literacy and college admission seminars to schools, libraries, churches, community centers, and non for profit agencies.

What can you tell us about accelerating emotional, spiritual and physical health?
"It comes down to how we look at ourselves, how we perceive ourselves and how we want to live the rest of our life. I think health is the number one factor that people should consider." The stress of practicing law had caused Cammy to become very ill and she had to change professions because of it.

What are your top three tips to create wealth, be it personal, financial or emotional?

    1. If I can keep strengthening my Emotional intelligence, my stronger mindset and keep having a belief, a stronger conviction that each day gives me the grace and the power to start all over again and be able to repaint the canvas of life, well, that is my first tip no matter what.
    2. Self affirmations, every day, first thing in the morning and right before bed, as well as gratitude exercises, change the chemistry in the brain to release more endorphins.
    3. Read lots of books - never stop learning!  Surround yourself with people who are doing better than you. To grow, you literally have to get out of your security, your comfort zone, and surround yourself with people who are doing better whether they are financially, spiritually, mentally, socially, whatever they're doing that's better. Let them be your role models. Let them be your guides. Let them be the goal that you want to set for yourself.  Seek out great mentors and coaches.

  • The 7 Things Kids Need To Hear You Say

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

In the world we live in, it can be hard to find the time to spend with our kids.  Mom and dad guilt is high and relationships and health can get strained.  Here are 7 things your kids need to hear you say:

    1. "As long as you did your best."  Winning isn't everything and failures are a part of life.  It's nothing to get stressed out about - just reassure them that they did the best they could with the resources they had at the time.  It's not a label for their entire life.
    2. "I love you." Saying the words out loud mean more than any toy, gift, or game.  Expressions of love such as a hug releases the hormone oxytocin, which immediately reduces stress and can override fears and pain.
    3. "Be yourself. The people will change around you." Being yourself means that you do, say, and act according to what is important to you. The local and global community around us is always changing.
    4. "I'm proud of you."  No matter how the day goes, they need to know that they have your support.
    5. "Be clear on what you value." Let them know that being clear on what they value will help them in any situation to make the best decision for them.
    6. "Love starts with love itself."  This is the old adage that you can't pour from an empty cup.  If you don't feel love, you can't give or receive love.  Loving yourself creates a bond with the one person who's guaranteed to always be there for you: you.  The security that comes with high self worth helps to support all 3 areas of the brain, especially during the critical early years of development.
    7. "No problem is too embarrassing. I'm here to help." Shame and guilt in children can carry into adulthood.  They need to know that you're in their corner, no matter what.

A wise man once said, "It's not about getting it right. It's about getting it started." Thanks, Benjamin J. Harvey.

Try one or two of these at first, in writing if the situation warrants it, then build on that.  It will only take a few moments out of your day but it can make a lifetime's worth of difference.

  • Connection to Self and Others with Genaaleen Sanchez

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

Today I have with me Genaaleen Sanchez, a Results Mindset and Well-being Coach, and an agent of change both in business and in life.  Genaaleen found herself a single mom in her mid-20s, but she turned that uncertainty into a mission of discovery and self empowerment.  She has made it her mission to empower people to lead from their hearts reconnect to their humanity, love their lives and live their dream.

As a coach, Genaaleen helps impact driven individuals and leaders to elevate their mindset and restore their connection to who they truly are for themselves.

I ask all my guests the same 3 questions.

What can your expertise do to accelerate health, be it emotional, spiritual or physical?
"As a transformational coach, I work with people to connect them with their ultimate potential and achieve any result that they want in their lives. One of the first steps of that process is really to connect them to themselves, because that's where it all starts. If you know who you are, you know what you want. You know what you need, then that's the beginnings of a person who is able to establish relationships and connections to others."

What are your top 3 tips for creating wealth?

    1. Get to know yourself and what you truly want from life, then empower yourself to get there. Question your beliefs and values and whether they are really serving you. Keep healthy boundaries by teaching others how to respect you.
    2. Educate yourself and develop skills you can use to support your lifestyle.
    3. Invest in your self care. Do something that gives you pure joy, because you are the one person in your whole life who will always be there.

What can you offer the listeners to reduce stress around weight problems?
"What triggered me to change my thinking around the weight is really the dissolution of the self judgment and the loving and accepting my body fully as it is. I'm just more mindful of the food that I put in my body and consciously choose what I eat. So that means I still eat chocolate, and I still eat cake from time to time. Because that was another important thing about it, is not to feel limited, because I've been on all diets before."

Genaaleen is offering a free vision and values discovery session for allowing you to get clear on what your vision is in life and what your values are, and perhaps getting a link between the two.

  • Listener question: Inflammation

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

Today we have a question from one of our listeners, Melissa.

Melissa asks, "How do you beat inflammation, protect ligaments during exercise, and what are inflammation fighting foods?"

Inflammation. What is it, exactly? Inflammation refers to your body's process of fighting against things that harm it, such as infections, injuries and toxins, in an attempt to heal itself. When something damages your cells, your body releases chemicals that trigger a response from your immune system. This response includes the release of antibodies and proteins, as well as increased blood flow to the damaged area. The whole process usually lasts for a few hours or days in the case of acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation happens when this response lingers, leaving your body in a constant state of alert. Over time, chronic inflammation will have a negative impact on your tissues and your organs. Inflammation is widely accepted as presenting as redness, heat, swelling, pain and loss of function - not always pain.

    Some common signs of inflammation:

    • Allergies
    • Skin issues
    • Brain fog
    • Trouble sleeping (getting to sleep, staying asleep, or getting up)
    • Poor sleep quality
    • Poor mobility
    • Mental instability
    • Digestive issues

According to Hubbard health, an anti inflammatory diet should consist of tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy such as spinach and kale, nuts, fatty fish, berries and oranges. But what we now know is that there are immune system types that some of these foods can actually contribute to inflammation in. So how do you know what anti inflammatory foods are right for you? The answer is immune typing. The team at Wholistic Natural Health Australia, who I'm blessed to work with, can actually help you with that and design an anti inflammatory protocol that helps your specific immune system as well as defeat inflammation.

In the case of severe inflammation, often diagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis, research shows that three of the four known immune system types actually funnel activated helper cells to the synovial cavity during the time of inflammation. The joints become so loaded with these cells, that the cavity fills: movement is restricted. Many professionals will treat the rheumatoid arthritis, but bypass the immune system and the cycle will continue because you are not getting to root cause.

Here are some steps you can take to protect your ligaments and beat inflammation:

    1. Get your immune system identified with a Functional Health Solutions practitioner.
    2. Focus on a range of movements - avoid repetitive exercises like jogging, but add resistance exercises, bodyweight exercises, or Pilates and yoga. Always stretch before and after.
    3. Eat the right anti inflammatory diet and follow the correct protocols for your immune type.
    4. Do not treat the symptoms: treat the root cause and systems of the body.

The body wants to heal, the body wants to be healthy. Ask a functional Health Solutions practitioner exactly what immune type you are. Ask questions. Do not treat the inflammation as the cause. It is the result.

  • Habits with Sharee Shefket

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

Today I have with me Sharee Shefket, mindset expert and founder of Wellness Coaching Company.  Sharee was a counselor for 16 years before moving into the disability sector, then transitioned into hypnotherapy.  She is a certified HypnoFit therapist and she runs a busy clinic and will soon be releasing a self development book for children.

Sharee works her clients through emotional blocks, which often have very real consequences within the body.  Often, those emotional blocks aren't even their own fears, but inherited from someone else earlier in life.  Mental health isn't quite the same thing as emotional health - it's the flip side of the same coin.

Sharee's top 3 tips for better emotional health:
    1. Face your fears.  Turn on the light and examine that boogeyman.
    2. Rewire your brain the same way you would clean up your computer files or browser tabs.
    3.  Love yourself.  You deserve to be loved.  Every person is valid and every person deserves to be loved.

When it comes to weight loss, Sharee often finds that the reasons people hold on to weight are not as simple as eating too much.  There are often some deep emotional wounds and blocks that contribute to the self sabotage that causes weight gain.

You deserve to love yourself and put yourself first.  It's your time to shine, and that starts with addressing your spiritual, emotional, and physical health, all 3, in order to create your magical life.

  • Resilience with Kenna Dean

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

My guest today is Kenna Dean, former actress and founder of KDean Consulting, which specializes in sales coaching and helping people to become more persuasive, have more presence, and make more of an impact in their career and in their life.  Kenna juggled motherhood and running her own business, and grew that business to 7 figures per year with 11 full time employees.  She didn't have much support early in life, so she learned how to be resilient and choose action over being the victim.

Kenna's top 3 tips for keeping yourself resilient are:
    1. No excuses!
    2. Keep self-care a priority.
    3. Don't believe the naysayers.

Years ago, Kendra suffered from anorexia.  With help, she was able to recover and repair her relationship with food.  After that and her office building catching on fire, she realized that she couldn't do everything by herself.  She needed to pull from her resources and get help.  Her advice is to use whatever you can, be it friends, therapy, sleep, whatever it is to pull you through the difficult time.  Having a business coach can help keep you on the path when you feel like you can't see where you're going.

When starting your own business, you will fall on your face.  But that's how you learn what works, what doesn't, pick yourself up and try it again.  What a coach or a mentor can do for you is keep you accountable, give you ideas, and save you some of the heartache that comes with building a business.

Today I have with me Sarah Decker, Podcast Manager, teacher, wife, and mom.  She holds several music degrees including a Master's in Music Composition for the Screen and she's using those skills to edit, produce, and manage podcasts, like mine!

I'm a big believer in, "Put it out there, and it will happen." For me, I put it out there in a Facebook group that I have been wanting to start a podcast, and up popped Sarah with a solution.  For her, she put it out there that she wanted to use her music and audio skills to make a living and she found a coach that helped her find podcast management.

For years, Sarah has let imposer syndrome and poor self image plague her and keep her small and unhealthy.  In this episode we discuss the mindset shifts she has made in her career goals, health, and emotional state that allow her to move forward.

  • When Life Gets In The Way

Join the conversation! Send Magic a text here!

Welcome to A Magical Life: health, wealth and weight loss. I'm Magic Barclay, your host. Today we'll just be introducing this podcast, what it's all about, and a little about me.

    Some of my health history:

    • 15 years ago, I found myself morbidly obese at 144 kilos.
    • I was a mum of two kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder and I was raising them virtually alone. I was becoming unwell with multiple lifelong health conditions.
    • I was in a very traumatic marriage.
    • Ten years ago, I discovered how much the body really wants to heal. I actually lost half my body weight and started learning all I could about mainstream health, fitness and personal development.
    • Five years ago, I was told what I was doing wasn't working. Yes, I was losing weight, but I was a very sick woman. So they actually told me I had 12 months to live.
    • I had stage three cancer, diabetes, Cushing syndrome and they diagnosed me with Lyme disease.
    • I had surgery and from that I developed lymphoedema. I was actually told at that stage to prepare my kids for life without a parent and I was locked into really nasty divorce proceedings.

What I learned from all of this, and what I'm going to share with you:

    • I've dedicated my life to learning all I could about the 11 systems of the body and how to help others take control of their health in a way that sustainable, ethical and supportive, rather than treating symptoms.
    • I am a practitioner of lymphoedema, a Functional Health Solutions practitioner and a complimentary medicine and integrative pathology practitioner and also a results coach, not a doctor.
    • We're talking about spiritual, and emotional and physical health.
    • Money's part of it. Wealth is what you see in yourself. It's how you value yourself.
    • Your body is a system and if something is out of balance, it will start to whisper.  Sometimes that will be itchy skin, a cough, weight change, but without addressing the root cause the body will start to scream to get your attention.

Listen to your intuition.  Listen to your body.  If you don't listen to the whispers, you will eventually hear the screams. I'm here to help you recognize the whispers.  Until next time, I wish you a magical life!
