Bob has been CEO since 2008 and prior to that served as chair of the Montana Public Service Commission for 11 years. He’s also served in leadership roles for various organizations committed to improving the efficiency and stability of our energy systems.

What first captures many people’s attention is the fact that Dierdre is mother to world-renowned climber, Alex Honnold, but that just scratches the surface of this woman’s story. She’s a mother to two athletic and activist children, a teacher, a writer, an artist, a conductor, a runner and a climber, to name but a few of her many identities. Dierdre’s book, The Sharp End of Life, is a wonderful account of a life lived being lived to its fullest, and perhaps accelerating in vigor with age.

Winona visited the University of Montana recently to give the Presidential Lecture Series address. Winona pulls no punches in this conversation and she has the courage to question, if not outright discard, some of the basic assumptions guiding our politics and economy.

Today’s conversation is with Conrad Anker, legendary mountaineer and leader in the outdoor community. He's climbed some of the hardest routes on the most notorious mountains around the world, from Everest to Antarctica.

Conrad is a mentor, philanthropist and activist. In particular, he is working to raise the volume on the climate crisis, along with his colleagues at Protect Our Winters - a nonprofit working to protect the places we love from the effects of climate change. Conrad’s had a front row seat to climate change in his many years traveling to wild landscapes significantly altered by warmer temperatures, more extreme weather, and many other factors.

Conrad is also a Montanan. He and his family live in Bozeman and are actively engaged in the Montana community. Conrad wants all of us who enjoy wild spaces and nature to be more mindful of the climate when we do.

It’s June and life is starting to approach normal again. People are out and about and one thing I’ve definitely noticed is the traffic. Lots of people and lots of cars. This is a challenge for Missoula and many other communities in Montana.

Fortunately, we have some good people and organizations working on the problem. I’m joined today by Gene Schmitz and Bob Giordano. Gene is a cycling enthusiast and member of the Missoula Cycling and Pedestrian Advisory Board. Bob Giordano is the founder and Executive Director of FreeCycles, a non-profit organization trying to create more sustainable transportation systems in Western Montana.

D’Shane Barnett is the new Director and Health Officer of the Missoula City-County Health Department. Prior to that D’Shane served as Executive Director for All Nations Health Center, an organization dedicated to providing sustainable healthy lives for Native People and the broader community through culturally based, holistic care. D’Shane earned his bachelors degree in sociology from the University of Montana, got a masters in health administration from UCSF, and is now working on his doctoral degree in public health here at UM.

D’Shane has been working on American Indian health for over 20 years and served in leadership roles at both the local and federal levels.
