A People's Guide to Publishing episodes

  • Episode 209: Should an author have a contract when they self-publish?

The question seems silly at first, but what happens when the publisher releases a book that they wrote? What happens a year, five years, or ten years later if the book is really successful? This week on the pod, we look at how these issues are managed legally as well as the most important part of publishing: setting expectations at all levels of the chain.

  • Episode 208: If an author doesn't have an agent, should they hire a lawyer?

Most novice authors do not have a lot of familiarity with a contract and do not have an agent, so they both don't know the standards of these agreements or how to read them. So it's entirely too common—several times per month for us—that an author hires a lawyer to read and negotiate these agreements. The trouble is usually that this lawyer often does not specialize in book contracts, or entertainment law at all. So instead of smoothing out the process and knowing the norms and how things work in practice, they catastrophize—almost universally making the situation worse. The number of books that didn't happen because of this is notable here. So this week on the pod, we take a look at these agreements and how to negotiate them.

  • Episode 207: How should publishers think about Platform w/ Guy LeCharles Gonzalez?

It is oft repeated that an author needs to already be famous in order to publish a book. This week on the pod, we are rejoined by Guy LeCharles Gonzalez who walks us through the reality of this situation and turns the tables a bit. What is a platform? Why is it important? What are its primary functions? What should an author look for in a publisher's platform? What should an author build in their own platform? How should a publisher build their platform?  Is this the case?
