The Phillies only need to win one more game to make the postseason. They only need to win two more games to win the NL East.
It’s going to happen.
But the Phillies fell into a first-place tie with the Dodgers for the best record in the National League, following Thursday night’s loss to the Mets at Citi Field. Taijuan Walker allowed eight runs in 3 1/3 innings. He is 3-7 with a 6.91 ERA, which is the fifth-highest ERA for any Phillies pitcher since 1901 (minimum 80 innings pitched). The Phillies are 4-11 when Walker starts.
It isn’t just Walker, however. The Phillies’ No. 5 starter has been a problem since Spencer Turnbull got hurt in June. The Phillies’ No. 5 starters have a combined 14.14 ERA in their last eight starts. They are 2-6 in those games. Those losses could be the difference between having home-field advantage through the NLCS and playing Games 6 and 7 of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium, if both teams get that far.
Jim and Todd also talk about the Phillies’ offense. It’s struck out 44 times in the past three games.
