This ABC News Radio special spotlights the thrills and skills that make up so much of our “play.” Host Jason Nathanson suits up with viral baseball sensation The Savannah Bananas, often referred to as the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball. We spend time with them as they rehearse their TikTok dances, practice trick plays, and get ready to bring joy and laughter to a sold-out stadium crowd in Fresno, California.
Plus, we time-travel back to 1886 with a baseball league that plays without helmets, barely a mitt, and rules that most of us never knew existed. Have the need for speed? We strap into the cockpit of a Formula 1 car with the only American on the grid. Then, ahead of the summer games, we mount up with the men and women of the US equestrian team, and we try our hand at “breaking,” one of the newest Olympic events.

We’ll peel back the lid on the tantalizing world of tinned fish, visit California’s 14-thousand-acre Rancho San Julian, and we’ll step into the kitchen with an award-winning pastry chef who promises “anyone” can make delicious desserts. We’ll also take a trip to the UK to toast a frothy brew that’s working to save the planet, and we’ll check in with World Central Kitchen as they work to serve hot meals to those in war zones and recovering from natural disasters.

Former President Donald Trump appeared in a Washington DC federal court on August 3, 2023, to be arraigned on four counts related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election that culminated with the January 6th riot at the Capitol. ABC’s Steven Portnoy had a close-up seat to the brief but historic proceeding. No audio was allowed out of the court, but Steven was able to send a steady stream of information as it happened to ABC’s Alex Stone, who relayed it live during coverage of Mr. Trump’s appearance and not guilty plea. Here are highlights from ABC News Radio’s coverage.
