Headline inflation has dipped to 4.2 per cent in the year to April, down from 4.6 per cent in March.

The trimmed mean measure - which strips out volatile items - was 3.4 per cent, up from 3.3 per cent the previous month.

The government is proposing what it calls the biggest shake-up to the employment system in decades.

The overhaul would split people seeking employment into three tiers, change the incentive scheme for job agencies, and change the mutual obligation settings.

It's been revealed that a plan to claw back fuel credits paid to mining companies was being discussed by federal ministers until the Iran war derailed those talks.

An internal Labor campaign is still pushing for the Fuel Tax Credit paid to mining giants to be capped at 50 million a year, which would claw back billions from coal companies that could be used to fund new climate projects.

Its expected to be back on the agenda at the party's national conference in July.Mining company Fortescue claims the tax credit disincentivises climate action.

The National Walk for Truth will end at Parliament House in Canberra this morning after a five-week trek.

Internet access has started to be restored in Iran, after what's been the longest-running national internet shutdown ever recorded worldwide.

The Iranian government cut access following the launch of US and Israeli attacks in late February; officials said the aim was to prevent surveillance, espionage and cyber-attacks.

Analysis commissioned by Greenpeace shows new data centres needed to train and run AI systems are behind a sudden growth in energy demand, citing Australian government data projecting an increase in data centre energy use of more than six-fold between 2024-25 to 2040.
