Victorian Police have begun a five-day search for Dezi Freeman in a remote part of Mount Buffalo National Park, in the state's north east.

More than 100 officers and volunteers are involved in the operation in a specific area of the park.

It comes five months after two police officers were shot dead at a property in Porepunkah.

Police say they strongly believe Mr Freeman is dead, after a witness reported hearing a gunshot in the area.
