At least twelve people have been killed and dozens are missing in one of Spain's deadliest wildfires on record.

Residents in southern Spain are fleeing their homes as a massive wildfire burns in the mountainous region.

Spanish emergency services say they are fighting the worst wildfires they have ever faced, which have so far killed at least 12 people. 23 others remain missing.

Liberal Senator Kerrynne Liddle has apologised for causing confusion, after claiming a person had died after failing to connect to Triple Zero amid a nationwide Telstra outage on Wednesday.

South Australian police have been investigating the death at a regional hospital in the state, but have since confirmed Senator Liddle's comments were "incorrect".

In a statement, Senator Liddle offered her condolences to the family of the person who died, while apologising to the wider community for the confusion, saying the concerns raised were based on information available at the time.

The missing persons squad has arrested a 16-year-old boy after a body was discovered in a small western Victorian town of Donald.

Police believe remains found late yesterday are of 13-year-old Layla Jeffrey, who 'd been missing from her Donald home for six days.

A 53-year-old Donald woman and a 55-year-old Melbourne woman are assisting with the investigation, and have not been arrested.

Former colleagues of veteran broadcaster Derryn Hinch are remembering him as a polarising person, following his death aged 82.

Hinch was best known for his decades-long career in the media, and his efforts to strengthen laws around sexual and violent offenders.

He died in his sleep this morning.

The federal communications minister says there's no evidence the Telstra outage contributed to the death of a regional South Australian woman on Wednesday.

SA Liberal Senator Kerrynne Liddle posted on social media on Wednesday claiming a person had died after they failed to connect to Triple Zero.

Telstra has today said there 's no record of a failed call to Triple Zero from the location, while SA's Police Commissioner has said there is "nothing to suggest" the outage "impacted on the woman's passing".

Telstra chief executive Vicki Brady has apologised to the company's customers, saying the telco let them down and that investigations into the cause of Wednesday's outage are continuing.

In her first public appearance since the outage that affected Triple Zero networks, trains and eftpos payments across the country, Ms Brady explained the outage was now under control.

A seabird in South Australia has tested positive to the deadly H-5 strain of bird flu.

The greater crested tern is the first Australian seabird to test positive to the virus, previous confirmed cases have involved migratory birds from the sub-Antarctic region.
