Abraham's Wallet

When I (Steven) first got married, I had a desire to find a marriage study that taught what the Bible directly said about marriage. I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I made one. It has been tweaked and altered over the years and now it is ready to be passed on to you.

Outside of your relationship with God himself, there is no more important relationship in your life than with your wife. This relationship takes the development of skills that you will develop for the rest of your life.

God is the creator of marriage. How does he say it should work? What does the picture of Christ and his church mean for our marriage relationships? How can your story with your wife play out the bigger story of the larger story of God and his people? All this and so much more is included in the 10 week study.

Click “Join My Tribe” to get the study for yourself.

There are often two ditches churches can find themselves in. There are the churches who think, my pastor is such a good public speaker. If he doesn’t EXACTLY fit in the qualifications of an elder, it’s ok. We are all just trying our best. I can look past this and that.

Then, there is another type of church whose members think it’s their personal responsibility to hold their pastor accountable to the qualifications of the elders and every implication that they think it holds. They are constantly on guard, looking for any potential sin in their pastor's lives.

Both of these ideas are wrong. But what isn’t wrong is the idea that there are very clear qualifications for elders and it is our responsibility to hold our pastors to them and be on guard for false teachers. How do we do this in a balanced and gracious way? Listen to our latest podcast episode to find out.

Last week the S&P 500 hit an all-time high. (Woohoo!) In light of this, we decided to take a minute (with the help of "Cletus") to demonstrate the importance of making “boring” financial investments.

But, patience is not only a virtue when it comes to finances. We also need to be patient as we shepherd the hearts of our children. This sounds great in theory, but what do you say and do when your 4 year old wants to get saved or get baptized? We get into all of this today.

There is a family (okay, there are many families) who have decided that, one month a year, they'll spend as little as possible, wear not-spanking-new clothes, forego lattes, and eat everything they already have! The LoDo exercise we do here at Abe's Wallet every February helps train us in spending, our ability to restrain ourselves... and helps train our money to not be our master! Give this experiment a listen and maybe try it yourself!

Who do you want to become? Setting ambitions isn't just for 8th graders; we all have to decide which way we're headed, then plot a course for our destination of choice. In this episode, Steven and Mark lay out a case for AMBITIONS: it's good to have them, but they can be dangerous if vanity is present.

The fellas lead off this episode with a review of 2023's AW episodes.

What can the Chronicles of Narnia, a decades-old children’s fiction teach us about having a godly home?  Mark Parrett talks with Aaron Bair, a teacher and author of A Joyful Outpost, which is an exploration of the Narnia stories created by C.S. Lewis. Aaron believes that a Biblical home of order, security, celebration, bravery, and hospitality are all wonderfully modeled for us by… Mr. and Mrs. Beaver!??
