On this episode, we interview Derek Lee, and English professor from Wake Forest University, about his new book, “The Parascientific Revolutions: The Science and Culture of the Paranormal,” and to discuss the pattern and history of anomalous studies in the Western World and how they persevere despite rejection by so much of the western tradition.
Lee is an assistant professor of English, and has developed a keen interest in rejected knowledge, and what those subjects may tell us about human identity, missed opportunities, potential growth, and the limits of old paradigms.
His book covers a broad range of episodes in the study of these phenomena, from the Star Gate program at SRI to Darryl Ben’s controversial studies of precognition.
We discuss the power and longevity of these topics, and how they relate to human experience. Science, as an institution, may fail to fully grasp the relevance of these topics, requiring further engagement from the humanities in Academia, which can deploy other approaches and glean relevant insight.
