ACOFAE: A Collection of Fandoms and Exploration.

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Jessica's Genre: Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon: "You undersold it."

Sometimes one birthday a year just doesn't cut it. Sometimes those half birthdays really hit hard. And sometimes on ACOFAE those half birthdays mean a little something new and different. Sometimes. This week is our very own Jessica Marie's half birthday and to celebrate her, ACOFAE is reading a book in one of her other preferred genres: ROMANCE! That's right everyone we are tackling straight up romance in Jessica's episode and it is a delight. Choosing the book perfectly, Jessica Marie and Laura Marie are able to have discussions about the book, but also about the setting and logistics! You know how we love logistics! What follows is a delightful light-hearted conversation that shows the love of fandom.

Always meet your idols.

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: So Let Them Burn: "Dragons, dragon school, dragon ROBOTS!"

In a weird little coincidence, ACOFAE has read a few robot books in a row and they've all been pretty awesome. So imagine the surprise when Laura Marie and Jessica Marie discovered that not only were there dragons in this book, but there are also pilots who operate dragon robots! The joy was intense to say the least. Then throw in sisters, one of which can talk to the gods?! ACOFAE was all in. The war is over and peace reigns supreme. Or does it. The gods allow a girl to continue to use their power with no consequences. Or do they? Old enemies slowly becoming the best of friends? Or do they?! No really, there's all this plus dragon school classes, worldwide politics, and someone sinister underneath it all. Something for everyone!

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Five Broken Blades: "They're always standing on business."

It has been a long while since ACOFAE read a heist book! Imagine Laura Marie's surprise when she went in blind and discovered a heist! Imagine Jessica Marie's surprise when she went in and found 6 POV's! Imagine the collective surprise when ACOFAE discovered that not only did they enjoy the book, but they were having FUN! Mai Corland's new release Five Broken Blades has it all: court politics, crime, a princess in disguise, love stories, and action! The action is what keeps you on the edge of your seat as the chapters get shorter and the plot thickens until we ultimately discover who was at the center of the scheme. Neither Laura Marie or Jessica Marie saw THE THING coming which was delightful on all fronts. Oh and there's a poison maiden. You know ACOFAE loves that.

TW / CW: according to the author, the book itself contains violence, blood, death (including death of parents, children, incarcerated people and animals), poisoning, substance abuse, alcohol, sexual activity, animal abuse, gender-based violence, sex work, suicidal ideation, and indentured servitude are depicted. Sexual Assault and graphic genocide are described.

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: The Phoenix King: "Then die."

You know how Laura Marie loves it when 'the thing" in a story happens? WELL buckle up because all the things are happening in Aparna Verma's The Phoenix King, previously The Boy with Fire. Politics, plot twists, religious fervor, and a red herring that took ACOFAE by surprise, The Phoenix King is a rich tapestry of new and old traditions. Technology and tradition are woven together to create a world where the gods might exist, magic might exist, but power and vengeance DO exist no question. When the old king bends to tradition and his daughter is set to take the throne, old enemies and old gods use the opportunity to make themselves known and cause the ultimate chaos. Filled with a ruthless heroine, mythical creatures, and a love story that is very sweet, The Phoenix King swept ACOFAE away.
