Melanie recently released a book called “Surviving in Spirit: A Memoir About Sisterhood and Addiction”. Her 30 year old sister died just 5 years ago from alcoholism. She has written articles about her experience loving an addict as well as other topics of interest related to drugs and addiction in our world today. This week Denise’s interview is with Lucy Jasso of San Diego Youth Services, the director of Camp Mariposa, a camp for children ages 9-12 who are dealing with addiction in their families. Denise has previously interviewed Karen Moyer of the Moyer Foundation, the founder of Camp Mariposa and similar camps around the country. There you can hear about the general concept and goals of the foundation and camps. Denise spent time observing at a camp session and talks about her experience with Lucy. This week we are going to clear up some questions submitted by you, Denise’s listeners , regarding the soon to be released new opiate pain drug, Zohydro and the controversy surrounding it. Denise will be speaking with Dr. Andrew Kolodny, a physician who heads the organization PROP (Physicians for Responsible Opiate Prescribing). The interview covers the escalation of abuse of prescription opiates over the past 15-20 years, the ways people become addicted to them and why, how they can be abused other than just taking more than prescribed orally, and who is included in this “new face of addiction”. They will also discuss the sequence of release of the drug, Oxycontin and how the formulas were changed over time to, theorhetically, make safer and more difficult to abuse. Also, there will be some talk about the rules and regulations and definitions of “Pill Mills” and what has been happening with them over the years. Then they will focus on the controversy over the release of a new, very potent and addictive opiate about to be released this month, Zohydro.

Dr. Kolodny gives Denise and her listeners suggestions about actions they can take to make a difference in this (including participating in a rally in Washington D.C. in September called the Fed Up Rally) and also encouragement to all of the small groups formed and that continue form to band together and make an even bigger difference.

Sam Polk is the Founder and Executive Director of Groceryships. He is a graduate of Columbia University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, which he earned during his eight years as a bond and derivative trader for Bank of America and King Street Capital Management. After leaving Wall Street in 2010, Sam spent the next rew years writing a book and doing volunteer work in Los Angeles through organizations like My Friend’s Place and Aviva, before found Groceryships. He is on the Board of Directors for Honor Kinds International and is passionate about helping children.

This is a term used by many of those in the multi billion dollar industry of synthetic marijuana. These words are put on the packaging of synthetic marijuana supposedly to take the responsibility off the sellers and put it onto the users of these products. We recognize this product in the news referred to as K2 and sometimes Spice. It has numerous other names too. As quickly as these compounds are becoming illegal that is how quickly a “molecule” is changed in the compound and repackaged as a legal compound. People are becoming very sick and dying from this. It is important to know about it.

This week Denise brings up a topic that is very rarely spoken about: The topic of Addiction and Alcoholism in the senior population. This topic is a very growing trend and needs to be addressed and understood. In the weeks to come, Denise will be interviewing some experts on this topic to answer questions and bring in resources to help with this issue in our families. This week Denise speaks with Jeffrey Anderson, a young journalist, on this topic. A few years ago Denise heard about this young man who was in his late twenties who was working with seniors and learning about what life was really about when we hit our senior years and many of the issues that come with age. Denise was curious about a young man taking on this topic as a journalist and for a job, so when she read about a recent article by him titled “The Quiet Epidemic of Senior Drug Abuse” , she decided to talk to him about this topic from the perspective of a young man. Mr. Anderson works at a place in Washington State called “A Place for Mom”, where people can get information and support for their senior loved ones with regards to health care and housing. He interviews families and seniors and writes articles about what he learns. This interview is a “conversation” about this topic.
