Youth Day is observed on June 16 in South Africa to evoke compunction for violent Soweto Riots in the nation's citizens and remind them how important their youth are because they are the future.
Because Youth Day is a public holiday, it's generally a day off from work for most workers.
In some years, observance of Youth Day lasts a whole month, with activities planned by the Department of Arts and Culture.
On June 16, 1976, high school students led a protest against the Bantu Education Act, which gave approbation to key apartheid policies which granted hegemony to whites.
On that day, police killed hundreds in a brutal massacre of students who took umbrage to the law.
In the weeks following the riot, many more youth were killed as officials remained intransigent.
The Bantu Education Act said that Afrikaans should be taught on equal footing with English in black schools in South Africa, which shifted the focus toward language rather than critical thinking.
While this focus on language created problems because it made free thinking more difficult, it wasn't necessarily the focus of the contention between lawmakers and students.
The protest was mostly about the divisive nature of the law, which created separate schools for black and white students.
The schools for black students were characterized by poor cond [...]
