  • Give It A Rest

"Give It a Rest" is what Matty tells his clients. Matty encourages his clients to try intermittent fasting. He is a Scientist and Nutritionist and has a good understanding of the body. A lot of how our bodies work relates back to primal times. You have heard all about the brain keeping us safe from danger, like being attacked by a lion? Well, our bodies also are primal in the sense that you need to give your body a break from digesting food so it can regenerate the rest of the body. If you are eating all the time, and Matty said based on a study he read, the average American eats 6-11 times a day, and you are never giving your body a break from digestion. All that energy could be used to repair other parts of the body or just more easily perform normal bodily functions. I asked Matty about women vs. men with intermittent fasting and he explained that it is in fact different due to our monthly cycle. Matty shared so much information and there's so much to learn from this episode!

  • I Want Sliding Shelves

"I am not old by any stretch of the imagination but I want those sliding shelves." My guest Heidi Huynh told me about sliding shelves that can help with not having to bend over and dig in lower cupboards. She shared lots of ways to adapt your home for aging. She made a good point to make a change before aging forces you to learn a new way. She gave an example of purchasing your next dining set with chairs that have arms. The arms can assist you in getting out of the chair. The last thing you want to do is buy a new dining set only to have to replace it 3 years later due to your physical abilities changing. Heidi spoke about the physical adaptations you can make to your home as well as mental challenges you may face. You can slowly implement the adaptations you may need. She encourages clients to consider where they want to age and will they have assistance to help with daily tasks. She reiterated to maybe make the move before your abilities force you to. Or maybe you simply want to be around others in the same stage of life as you - assistance needed or not. At the end of the day, just think ahead and if you want the sliding shelves now...why not! Install them!

  • Are You The CEO of Your Health?

Dana Frost went to the zoo with her kiddos and a friend. They all went back to Dana's house for dinner when Dana accidentally cut her hand. Typical mom, she put it off till later, but when she went to the Dr. her heart rate was very low! Dana found herself at the beginning of a long health journey. She was diagnosed with burned-out electrical conduction of her heart. The doctors were surprised because this is something they would normally see in a 70+ female. In her interview, Dana shared advice on how to be the CEO of your health today. She encourages people to slow down and listen to their bodies. She had been living abroad and had adopted children. She realized looking back that there were signs but she didn't take the time to actually listen. Now her body was demanding her to slow down to heal.

If you start to plan now together...if that day ever does come then you are knowledgeable and prepared. The reality is that planning for the future, now, IS the right thing to do today. • America Needs To Do Some Extra Credit Work

America would get a grade letter C for women's health and gender equality! Are you surprised? As caregivers and mothers, there are a lot of demands and often women's health gets addressed last. Women are also earning less then men making it difficult to provide a better lifestyle too. Kelly Nevis, the CEO of the Women's Fund of Rhode Island, joined me and shared that information. Kelly's organization and personal mission is to improve this grade with a focus on access to reproductive health, economic security, and civic leadership and diversity. She is doing the extra credit and encouraging others to join her! Her workshops and programs promote self-advocacy and helping women learn how to negotiate their salaries, reach higher, and much more. One of her favorite quotes is "It's not bragging if it's true!"

  • In Sickness Or In Health

In sickness or in health, anytime is a good time to health journal. Shelley McLellan, with Aspen Care, is my guest and she explained all the benefits of health journaling. She pointed out that when you are given a diagnosis, journaling is a great way to process your emotions. It can also be a great way to jot down what a Dr. has said, results from an appointment, or even to record times medications that were taken as well as how they made the person feel. It's funny how 2 people can be present at the same dr. appointment and have two totally different takeaways!! Shelley's journal can keep all the facts straight.

You don't always have to be sick to health journal. Maybe you want to track a health journey or personal best times or benchmarks. You may be exploring how food affects you. Whatever the case may be Shelley has developed a very comprehensive health journal for these specific reasons. Her work experience exposed the need for a journal to have all the notes from all the appointments and phone calls in one place. Health journaling is for better or worse in sickness and in health.

  • Information Highway

Deb Burton has started an information highway for professionals, caregivers, to elderly looking down the road. This non profit is a way to share knowledge. It's a beautiful exchange of knowledge from youth to elderly as well as elderly to youth. Deb sparked a memory for me. It was, my grandmother, watching after my teenage daughter at the time, Samantha. Due to their time together, my grandmother learned how to use the computer. She used this skill later helping to file some paperwork electronically. It's a perfect example of what Deb helps to encourage with RI Elder Info. There is also a lot of information in the way of aging like Power of Attorney, Medicare, Medicaid and much much more!!
