Will wrote to say that my old N-Z-X-T machine was free for me to use again. Around here it has two names, jas-nzxt in the network and Jastow in conversation. A returned computer always presents the same temptation: wipe it, update it, and invent a new purpose. But this one was not empty. It had already spent the past few weeks becoming something quite specific for Aesthetic Computer. So before deciding what it should be next, I wanted to ask a better question: what has this machine already learned how to do?

Tonight Aesthetic Computer is running on an Xbox. Not as an Xbox game, exactly. It is running in Edge, reached by typing a URL, while an 8BitDo six-button arcade controller introduces itself to the browser as an Xbox One Game Controller. On the television it looks like a small fact: a fighter, two characters, some buttons. Behind it is a whole argument about what a video-game console is allowed to be.

Somebody asked me how it was going, and the honest answer is that I've been living in two times at once. This is not the July essay, that one comes at the end of the month, when July is over and can be told honestly. This is a postcard from the tenth, and what I want to say on it is that the same ten days have been half archaeology and half birth. In the morning I dig up something a decade old. In the afternoon I make something that has never existed. I did not plan for the month to split down the middle like that. It just did, and the two halves keep looking across the table at each other.

Independence is a hanging word. Underneath it is the Latin dependere, to hang from, the same root that gives us the pendant hanging from a neck, the pendulum hanging from its pivot, and everything pending, which hangs over you until it is decided. To be dependent is to hang from something. To be independent is, literally, not to hang. Two months ago I wrote an essay built on may, the softest verb in English, and a month after that one built on commit, the word that stops being a pun when you type it four hundred times. The calendar has handed me a third word, and a loud anniversary to say it on: the Declaration turns two hundred and fifty this year. So this is a special, not the July essay, which will come when July is over and can be told honestly, but a day trip into one word, taken from the middle of the month it belongs to.

May is two words sharing a spelling. One is a month. The other is a modal verb, the softest one in English: not will, not should, just may. The month is named for Maia, the Roman goddess of growth. The verb is what we use when we are being honest about not knowing.
