After the Hype

Welcome to the land of Valderian, a realm of promise, a realm of beauty, and a realm that’s engulfed in war. Our story begins deep within the northern mountain of Gris Norvald in a chamber of ill purpose. Four tiefling awaken to find themselves in unfamiliar territory, with no memory of how they got there. What dangers await our heroes in this premiere episode of the podcast?

SPECIAL NOTE: We’re on the After the Hype RSS feed until we get our own feed going through itunes and google play, so be patient as we get set up!

This week we're talking about the best animated film of 2018, and the one to beat out Disney at the Academy Awards - Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse! It's a wonderful, hilarious, and genre-elevating film bursting at the seams with heart. Special thanks to Bryan Newton for joining us to break down everything we love about this film and give us insight into the animation.

This week on the podcast we all switch bodies! Just kidding. Actually, we talk about the wonderful, fantastical, body-switching, and time-traveling movie Your Name - a cinematic treat with a great story and even greater animation. Special thanks to friend of the show Paul Krueger for joining us and giving some great insight on the film.

This week it's a more intimate podcast as Bryan and Chewie talk about A Fish Called Wanda...all from the comfort of their marital bed! The film sports a stellar cast, including John Cleese, Michael Palin, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kevin Kline, who practically steals the show. An overall fun romp, the likes of which don't get made today.

This week on the podcast it's just Bryan and Jon as they talk about Inspector Gadget and Green Lantern, two movies that were widely hated and that ended up damaging or altering the careers of their main actors. They delve into the similarities between the films as well as what worked and what didn't. It's a fun, smaller episode that you won't want to miss.

Scaramouche? Galileo? Beelzebub? We grapple with the disappointing Bohemian Rhapsody this week on the podcast and try to make sense of what went wrong and why this couldn't have just been a movie about Freddie Mercury and Bowie creating "Under Pressure." Special thanks to Elliot Campos for joining us this week and providing - once again - an excellent breakdown worthy of Queen itself.

You know what zombie films could use? Christmas and musical numbers. That's what we've got with this week's movie ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE. Friend of the show Makaela Newsome joins us to talk about this fun, if flawed film. A good time all around, and one we have a heck of a time discussing. Come on by and give it a listen, but don't forget your zombie-slaying implements.

This week on the podcast we take on Roma, Alfonso Cuaron's Oscar contender (and winner for Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Foreign Language Film) that has us wondering if we even saw the same movie. Graham Mason joins us to go over why it wasn't as impressive as the hype would lead you to believe. There are some great moments in here, but they're hidden within many a baffling choice.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to listen to this week's episode of After the Hype, where special guest Kyle Smith joins us to talk about the latest in the Mission Impossible franchise. It's possibly the best in the series and we talk about why that is.

This week it's a battle of the bad as we fight over which film in the bottom 100 of IMDb reigns supreme. Will it be the wacky Arnold Schwarzenegger flick, or will it be the sequel to the first Mortal Kombat. Maybe it will be the one with all the piranhas, or perhaps it will be the one where Nicolas Cage burns in a tall wooden statue. Guess you'll just have to listen to find out.
