Claire says she literally tried every sport at school. Most lunchtimes She was at one sports club or other. She says she was never very good at anything but She would run about for ever!
At 17 Claire decided to join the army. She claims she wasn’t exactly suited to this as She was a shy teenager but off She went anyway. Claire says she was the worst recruit but served 7 years, played football for the Corps and begrudgingly ran when She was asked to. On leaving The Army Claire had a nice chunk of leave and started running for fun and she decided to trained for the great north run. This is where her love for running emerged.
A few years of running, interspersed with football led to Claire doing the London marathon in 2011.
2012 and a freak ballot entry into the first ride London gave Claire a new found love for road cycling. Few later years and a good few centuries of road biking take her up to 2016 when She stopped everything again to have her daughter.
2018, when Claires daughter was 18 months She randomly entered a super sprint Duathlon. She says she came last by an actual mile but she loved it. She hasn’t looked back since!

Hannah was a very sporty child. Her parents had always encouraged her and her sister to participate in sport and she remembers sitting on a humid poolside watching her sister swim and wanting so badly to join in with her club sessions.
When Hannah was old enough she started club swimming which she did up to County Level for Oxfordhsire. Hannah then began athletics with Oxford City Athletics club after falling in love with cross country at school. With demand for her to complete swim sessions before school and the pressure in the sport rising, she gave it up to focus solely on Athletics and also competed at County level.
Hannah says was never anything special, but loved the sport, loved competing and loved the social aspect. At 15 she began assisting in coaching at the club and worked her way through the coaching qualifications.
When Hannah moved to sixth form she dropped out of her club sport and coaching for a number of reasons. The school was a Boy's school which only had girls in the six form only and provisions for girls sport were not great! But she really missed it and was keen to get back into a club setting as soon as she got to University.
When at University Hannah got her first taste of cycling and loved it! Again, she claims she wasn't anything special but just loved being part of a club and having a routine again. Hannah began coaching again for the athletics club and started on her route through the coaching qualifications again.
When she moved to do her PhD in Kent, Hannah joined Medway Triathlon Club and hasn't looked back since!
Alongside training she began coaching for the club and was supported by funding from the University through their Sport Scholars team to race. In her first year of competing in triathlon she qualified for the World Aquathlon Championships for her Age Group and came 7th.
Since then she has continued to compete and has Qualified this year for the European Sprint Championships for her Age Group.

Stuart started at 7 years old swim training and was put in with older kids and adults. Constantly having to keep up meant he improved quickly. Always long distance races in the pool. County level podiums at 400, 800 & 1500m & raced at Midland District.
Unfortunately at 15 he fell out of a tree and broke his arm and dislocated his shoulder. He had to have pins put in and had a massive setback to swim training. Once he recovered from the surgery, his humerus had grown and the pins were then rubbing on the muscle and had to have further surgery to have the pins out. He had one more season but it was to be his last.
He also changed his swim focus to Open Water. Nationally he made it to 8th in the Grand Prix series as the youngest competitor.
After a few years of various events, he started his multisport journey doing 5 triathlons in a row. Using his strengths of swimming and biking he decided to qualify for an agegroup aquathon, which he did and competed in Ibiza and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and got a silver medal in his agegroup. He followed this by qualifying for the worlds in Pontevedra but couldn't afford to go.
In the future Stuart fancies going long really long by doing the Arc to Arc, but has still unfinished business with agegroup aquathon.
This Episode also features the first in several chats about Mental Health in Athletes with Dr Pippa Jayne NHS Psychiatrist. In the first part we discuss Depression and Anxiety.

On Episode 25 we have the 3rd and final part of our Strength and conditioning chat with Dave Cripps from TriTenacious.
Then we have Agegrouper Andy Biggs
Andy was Born and went to school in Sussex. Liked sport but as a late developer and the smallest kid in school year, never excelled.
Going ‘up north’ to University in Durham coincided with growth in height and strength, so enjoyed sport more. Got into rowing, and ran as training. Andy was doing some sport 6 days a week. Ran his first half marathon (great North Run 1987 – 1:41)
Andy Graduated, stayed in Durham, got married and stopped being consistently athletic. Ran a Great North Run every three years or so, getting slower each time.
After Ten years of marriage and professional career passed, with two kids along the way he decided to get consistently fit. Started running Great North Run every year. Finally beat his time from 1987
In 2003 Ran first of 11 marathons (one a year). In 2004 Andy Joined Athletics club (Durham City Harriers) – realised it was very social and welcoming and wished he joined years earlier.
In 2009 Peak of speed/fitness. 10K 37:53 5K 18:13 Aged 42. He did his first Sprint Triathlon. Pool swim and used his offroad, flat handled hybrid bike. He loved it, but still reckoned Triathlon would be too expensive. Didn’t want to buy a wetsuit and flashy bike out of the family budget.
In 2010-2013 he focused on Marathon training. After a (slow) PB at 2013 London Marathon, Andy got fed up with trying to chase three hours and thought about doing something else.
So 2010, 2012, 2013 he Bought a road bike and did the Vatternrundan 300km cycle sportive in Sweden with a team from work (they had a factory in Sweden).
2014 (aged 47) set new PB for half marathon (1:24:26) – 16 minutes quicker than he ran as a 20-year-old in 1987!
In 2014 Andy decided to have a more serious go at Triathlon. So he bought a wetsuit and had a summer of swim, cycle and running events for charity, culminating in a Standard Triathlon. Got hooked….!
It was 2014 when For a bit of a laugh, Andy thought he would have a go at GB Age group qualification….
2015 ETU Sprint Duathlon in Alcobendas, Spain. Weather that the team manager described as “the worst she’s ever seen for a championship event”. But he Love it nevertheless.
In 2016 Qualification trail – Got Hypothermia at the Oulton Park Spring Duathlon.. yet qualified for Penticton ITU 2017.
In 2017 – 2019 Andy completed a further 11 appearances in an Age Group Tri suit. Went to every World and European Duathlon championship. Finished nearer the back of the field than the front…..but justified my selection by beating at least one Brit each time.
In 2019 Andy Finally swam in GB Kit –he did Aquabike in Pontevedra and Targu Mures, plus Aquathlon in Targu Mures (one of four ETU events in a week!)
In August 2019, Andy had an almost life changing crash off his bike in training, breaking three vertebrae. He could easily have been dead (if no helmet) or paralysed. Ended up with a Halo vest just like Tim Don has after his Kona Accident. Out of training action for 5 months.
