One of the most important conversations you'll have during the in-home presentation is explaining how protecting PART of the mortgage can still accomplish their goal of PROTECTING the mortgage. And most people will be OVER-paying if they try to pay off their entire mortgage.

The single most important thing you can do on an appointment is build trust. Imagine being in your client's shoes. A stranger just showed up. You've known him or her for no more than 20 minutes before you're being asked your social security number, driver's license number, health information and ultimately your bank account information. Unfortunately, we live in a world full of scammers and snake oil salesmen.

Obviously you want to do business with someone who you can trust to handle all your personal information. You need to do everything you can to differentiate yourself from the pack. Here, I go into specifics, along with a fun story of the most skeptical nut I had to crack so far and how I still got the information to write the application.

The biggest question new agents have is, "How do I run an appointment?" And it's a great question. One that you likely won't answer until you've gotten through ten or 20 appointments of your own. It may seem intimidating, but don't worry- the worst you can do is botch it and end up not writing a policy. But you didn't have one anyway, so you're right where you were before you knocked on the door.

But we do want to give you the best odds for success. So to keep it simple, follow a few principles and guidelines and you'll do just fine. This podcast isn't meant to replace what Eric Valdez and Bill Martin have already so eloquently put together. Instead, this podcast teaches you about the basic tools you should have and also the principles you should follow from the time you enter the home.

Most importantly, just relax and have fun. These are real people and aren't expecting perfection. They'll mirror the energy you put out, so laugh and enjoy your time together. You may just botch it up and still make a sale! I've done that many times myself.
