Question: So, trick question. Ready? What is the one thing no educator, no matter what their degree is – has that you don’t have?
Answer: You have more love for your kids then any teacher could possibly have. Therefore you want what is best for your children and homeschooling is one way that you can be sure your children learns what is most important.
Teaching Tips:
If you’ve decided to homeschool you’ve been over the homeschool laws in your state and fielded questions on socialization. Believe me, homeschool kids don’t have the public / private school’s kids fear of peers and they won’t have the struggles most kids have of feeling they can’t say anything or people will think they are dumb! My five homeschooled kids did not have filters.
They could easily converse with adults or peers and had no difficulty ordering in a restaurant or asking for more ketchup at a fast-food counter. They are all pretty self-sufficient. Down to doing their own laundry and cooking. We made life skills part of their homeschool with chore and responsibility charts.
I never regretted one moment of homeschooling my children or the co-ops where I taught a group of children.
In my homeschool journey, I met people who homeschooled for religious reasons (we didn’t start that way, but ended up that way), those who wanted their children to know their native language as well as English and music as a prerequisite to every other subject, and those who played sports or travelled extensively. I also met people whose sole purpose was for their children to attend an Ivy League College.
Every one of those people (no judgments here) had a reason for homeschooling that was unique and different. So, just because you are listening to this podcast on teaching doesn’t mean you have to agree with every single point, but I do hope it is beneficial for you!
I had an amazing college instructor or taught us to find the answers rather than to memorize the work. While this was important pre-dating the digital age in our children’s case it is important to understand that information is important and the application of information is key. Someday our kids will have jobs and the idea that we can find everything online precludes learning. Why remember what we can find with a click of a button. We do not want the information to be dumbed down!
Teaching is basically easy, and people tend to make it difficult.
