In part 2 of this series, Sgt. Celestina Rossi and Det. Fadi Rizk shares their thoughts about the pain that must have been felt by the family of Lesia Jackson and the guilt they must have felt for leaving the swimming pool during the argument causing her death.

It is often said that forgiveness is the key to unlocking inner peace and healing. It is a powerful emotion and a difficult process to go through. When a tragedy occurs, such as the murder of a family member, it can be difficult to forgive and move on. It can be even more difficult when the family believes that the perpetrator has escaped justice for years. This was the case for the family of Lesia, who was murdered 43 years ago.

The family of Lesia had two brothers who were at the swimming pool when the tragedy occurred. It is believed that they had an argument with Lesia and left, leaving her alone. For 43 years, they have carried the guilt of not being there to protect her, and have not done any interviews since. It is understandable why they would feel so much guilt and remorse, and why they would not want to speak about it as it was a painful reminder of the tragedy that happened.

The family had gone through the process of forgiving and moving on, but the news of the real perpetrator being found brought back all their pain and guilt. Forgiveness is an important part of healing and moving on, but it is not an easy process. It takes time, and it is often difficult to forgive when it feels like justice has not been served.

Sgt. Celestina Rossi is a Crime Scene Investigator at Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Conroe, Texas with over 21 years of law enforcement experience. She is also the President of the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts. Meanwhile, Detective Fadi Rizk is also an officer at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and is a member of the Cold Case Squad, responsible for all cold case investigations assisting MCSO detectives, Country and District Attorneys, as well as other law enforcement agencies.

Betsy Brantner Smith is the national spokesman for the National Police Association. She is a retired 29 year veteran of the Naperville, Il Police Department. She has been a law enforcement trainer for over 20 years.

Law enforcement officers have been facing criticism in recent years, with some incidents causing a shift in public opinion to view them as villains. However, the majority of law enforcement officers are heroes who risk their lives to protect communities, apprehend criminals, and respond to emergencies.

Today, Sergeant Betsy Brantner-Smith, shares her unique perspective on the challenges and sacrifices that law enforcement officers face every day, and how we can better support and recognize their efforts as true heroes.

She speaks about her personal experiences as a law enforcement officer and the sacrifices that officers make every day. The recent tragedy in Sheriff Mark Lamb's family serves as a reminder of these sacrifices.

In the finale of this series, Eliseo and Jared discuss the recent events in Memphis, Tennessee where police officers have been accused of excessive force. It highlights the importance of educating and training law enforcement officers in regards to restraining and managing suspects, as well as on the potential for police misconduct to be recorded and caught on camera. 

The death of Tyre Nichols is a tragic example of what can happen when police officers are not properly trained. The officers involved in the incident had different levels of experience, yet none of them had the training to recognize when it was time to stop. In addition, the officers failed to call for a supervisor or take any other action to de-escalate the situation. This lack of training and awareness of the consequences of their actions likely added to the tragic outcome.

Overall, police training is essential for the safety of our communities. Officers must be trained in how to recognize and de-escalate potentially dangerous situations, as well as how to protect themselves and their communities. 

Without proper training, police officers are not equipped to handle the dangers of their job and the consequences can be devastating.

Eliseo Medina is a Senior Intelligence Police Officer of the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia, with over 30 years of experience in law enforcement. He was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Puerto Rico, where his family had ties to the police department and military.
