Being a homicide detective isn't the glamor you see on TV. 

When a murder happens, which is usually at night, the detectives are called in and they must drop everything they're doing and head immediately to the scene. The clock is ticking and time is not on the side of the detectives. 

It takes grit, determination, persistence and years of training to solve the more complicated cases. Some murders have almost no evidence, no witnesses, no suspects. Combine all of that with the fact that the case has gone cold from lack of leads, and that is the life of a cold case detective. To say the detective must get creative is a dramatic understatement!

Detective Lindsey Wade had been working on Jennifer Bastian's murder case for years. She had grown to love her mom, even received strength from her to keep moving forward, somehow. 

'If Pattie Bastian, who's 12 yr old daughter can put a smile on her face and keep going, then I can too' was Detective Wade's mindset. 

But the cold case was 30 years old! Evidence was almost non-existent, good leads and suspects few and far between, and every day the case dragged on seemed more and more hopeless. 

Then,  in 2015 there was a breakthrough. Detective Wade learned about a new genealogical technique in Arizona that might help get a family name from a Y-STR profile. So she sent it to them and the Arizona lab returned 3 names. One of those names was in the case file but not anyone Det Wade was remotely focused on. 

But now Detective Wade had a plan. Every year their cold case unit needed to conduct an exercise. This year (2016), they were going to reopen this case, put out a renewed call to the public and go collect DNA buccal swabs from as many suspects as they could. With all the help they mustered they collected hundreds of swabs. 

After almost 18 months and negative after negative result came back from the crime lab, Detective Wade had almost given up. Then she got the call. We have a match. Learn what happened from there in this episode!

In 1986 Tacoma, Washington was a beautiful, quiet and safe community. Or so all the residents thought. 

In May, 1986, 12 year old Michella Welch was riding her bike in a city park. She never came home. Search dogs found her body that night. She had been sexually assaulted and murdered. 

Just a few months later another young girl, Jennifer Bastian, was riding her bike in a park just a mile or so away from where Michella was killed. When she failed to come home at the time she had told her father they began to search for her. After tracing her typical bike route with no trace of her, they called the police and a massive search was launched. Her body was not discovered until a jogger noticed a foul smell in the park two weeks later. 

Detectives thought the two crimes were most likely committed by the same perpetrator because of the similarities of the two cases. Both young girls, riding a bike in a park, both in the North end of Tacoma, both sexually assaulted and murdered. 

DNA was obtained from Michella's case but there was no profile in CODIS to compare it to. Jennifer's case was much more difficult. Because her body was so decomposed when they found her, and DNA technology being what it was in the 80s, separating any suspect DNA from her DNA was impossible. 

Fortunately law enforcement are some of the most dedicated, persistent and relentless individuals in all of society, and the Tacoma PD never gave up on their cases. 

In time DNA technology improved. A male profile from Jennifer's swimsuit was able to be collected and when compared to the DNA from Michella's killer, the two did NOT match! This threw the entire investigation into a different realm as now the cases had to be examined as two completely separate and unrelated crimes. Suspects previously discounted had to now be reexamined. Witnesses re-questioned. 

The cold case unit had their work cut out for them!

What do you do when you are investigating a 1961 cold case and you learn one of the most prolific serial killers in American history (Ted Bundy) may be a suspect? You get to work! 

Cold case detective (retired) Lindsey Wade was reviewing cold case files in Tacoma, Washington, and realized Ted Bundy could have killed the victim from their oldest case. It was a long shot, but one that needed to be explored. Evidence was going to be sent to the lab for DNA testing. But she didn't have a reference sample from Bundy. 

But surely Ted Bundy would be in the CODIS (national) DNA data base right? He is the poster child for why we need one! Serial killer who operated in numerous states across the country, likely committing many crimes that have never been solved but DNA might be collected someday. 

But not even the state of Florida, where he was executed, had his profile. That had to be fixed. So detective Wade, along with numerous others, went to work and eventually found some of his blood that had been stored in a safe for 40 years and managed to get a DNA profile from it.

Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is a playground bully - just on a much grander and deadly scale. He believes he can act however he wants, take what he wants, and there's nothing of significance anyone will do about it, especially the "leaders" of the Western World. 

So two days ago he invaded Ukraine. Not at the minor scale all the intelligence agencies indicated, but a full scale attack with almost 200,000 troops, armor and aircraft. His armies have fired missiles at civilian housing, his tanks have run over civilians in cars and casualties are rapidly rising. 

What have the leaders of the world done? Very little. Applied sanctions against Putin's billionaire buddies which will make it more difficult for them to get their kids into Harvard. But the US and other countries are still buying thousands of barrels of oil and natural gas from Putin, the mainstay of his economy, making him richer than ever. 

Never underestimate the stupidity of politicians. 

How does Putin explain himself? He's justified because the Ukrainians and Russians have an ancestral and language connection so he is simply uniting the two. As ridiculous as that is no one has done much about it except the President of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people who are putting up a surprisingly fierce resistance. 

The similarities between Putin's mentality and most criminals is startling. Someone has what he wants so he's just going to take it. And unless someone is big and bad enough to stop him he really doesn't care what others think. 

Add to that the weak and feckless actions of our world, state and community leaders in essentially enabling criminals to have free reign of many of our largest states and cities and no one should be surprised that crime of every level is on the rise. 

We're at a dangerous crossroads folks, and unless the good men and women of the world stand up and demand our leaders do their duty it will only get progressively worse.

Episode 4 - Where do we go from here? 

Forensic DNA testing has advanced to the point that DNA analysts only need a few cells to produce a profile. Some say 10-12 cells. Could that many viable cells of the killer still be on the shoelaces that were used to tie up the boys? Could that many cells still be on the sticks that were used to shove the boy's clothing into the mud? It's certainly possible and worth a shot. 

Why not pursue the truth to the end, wherever that may be? Of all those involved with this case, no one has more to lose than Damien. He sat on death row for almost 18 years, yet he is the one who wants this DNA testing to happen. If his DNA is found, he'll lose all of his support. Will it clear his name? Maybe. But isn't that worth a couple of thousand dollars to know for certain? Many believe it is. 

Best case? The killers DNA is collected and justice for Steve Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers is finally found. 

Our justice system has become a conveyor line of cases moving through, many without trials and only plea deals, and as many as 10% of the people currently serving in prison may actually be innocent but faced a much longer sentence so took a deal. Don't have the financial resources to hire a decent lawyer? You may very well end up in that situation. 

The West Memphis 3 is a tragic case in so many ways it's almost difficult to describe, because there are actually two sets of three victims, and then the trauma associated with the victims families and the community continue to this day. The murders happened in 1993 in West Memphis, Arkansas.The first set of victims are three little 8 yr old boys who were murdered, stripped of their clothing, tied up with their own shoelaces and buried beneath the surface of a creek near their neighborhood. Their clothes were also forced under the surface with sticks and tree branches to hide the crime. 

The second set of three were three teenage young men who were convicted of killing the boys, allegedly committing some form satanic ritual on them in killing them, and hiding their bodies. They served 18 years before they were released but to this day they have not been exonerated and are still considered murderers. 

We discuss this case w investigator Bob Ruff for a number of reasons. He has a different perspective, he's done extensive research on the case, and he has done a full documentary on the case w Oxygen TV. Bob is also working with the defense to get more evidence tested, possibly with the M-Vac system, in order to collect any possible DNA material from different pieces of evidence.

Episode 3 - Our justice system has become a conveyor line of cases moving through, many without trials and only plea deals, and as many as 10% of the people currently serving in prison may actually be innocent but faced a much longer sentence so took a deal.

The West Memphis 3 is a tragic case in so many ways it's almost difficult to describe, because there are actually two sets of three victims, and then the trauma associated with the victims families and the community continue to this day.
