In this episode Mike talks with best selling authors Max Brooks and Steve Leonard about their recent works “To Boldly Go: Leadership, Strategy and Conflict in the 21st Century and Beyond”. This book is a collaboration project with over 30 authors. They use science fiction to talk about the future, current and what if scenarios.
In this episode they discuss the book, current society, military problems and what our mindsets need to be to shape our future. Both the authors are known for their unconventional thinking, which has inspired leaders across the globe to respond to potential crises. Steve is a veteran of the United States Army and Law Enforcement. His family has Founded the Company Targeted Motivational Engagement (TME). This family is one of winners, they have worked as a team to establish a brand that is rooted in competition, support and constantly moving forward together. Both of their daughters are CrossFit Teenage competitors and never afraid to get their hand dirty on the family homestead.
In this episode Mike sits down with Steve and his daughter Kadi, they talk about the principles that make this family unit so strong. How transparency and real talk are the norm, what one goes through they go through together! This is a family that is moving forward in big ways and anyone that is a parent will want to have a notebook ready!!

Vinny is a former Army Ranger, Prison Guard and Border Patrol Agent. He has since moved on to become the founder of Beteran and actor on the popular TV show Mayan MC. Vinny has amassed a huge following because of his relatable content and giving it to people straight. He has a podcast titled the Vinny Roc Show and an author of two books.
In this episode Vinny talks about how his years as a baseball player led to him serving our country in multiple capacities. How he struggled through transitions and dealing with the loss of many of his friends. He is raw and unfiltered in this episode and has no problem telling everyone were he messed up.
We also talked about how our time in uniform doesn’t stop. We must continue to serve even after we hang up the uniform. We can’t become “those” veterans that just propagate the entitled mentality. The Twenty-Year War is a photo book that tells the stories of the Veterans that fought in the Global War on Terror. It’s produced by Beau Simmons and Former Army Rangers Dan Blakely & Tom Amenta. The forward was provided by General Joseph Votel, U.S. Army, Retired.
In this episode we talk about the amazing idea that Dan had less than a year ago. The epic journey they embarked on to capture the heroes stories from America’s longest war. Contain in it are stories of loss, struggle and victories from the 71 Veterans highlighted in the pages.
Tom and Dan share about how this book has helped them understand what it meant to be part of this war and generation. Beau shares about how he will be forever changed by the stories, veterans and his race across the country numerous times to photograph these amazing imagines.
They knew they wanted to release it on the 20th Anniversary of September 11th, they had no idea that it would also coincide with current events in Afghanistan.
The Team also runs a Podcast Titled Never Left Behind, where they tell the stories of veterans from all branches of service.

Mark Jacobsen is an Active Duty Air Force Officer, who currently is a professor at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies. Mark started his career as pilot and later transitioned to extensive work in drone programs. Also, Mark is an amazing author, his books include Eating Glass and Lord of Harambee. He contributes to multiple Blogs like War on the Rocks and From the Green Notebook.
In this episode Mike and Mark give into failure, learning from it and how Mark decided to write about it. There are not a lot of books that talk about failure and this one does an amazing job, weaving Mark’s person accounts into lesson-learned for life.

If you’ve been listening to Always in Pursuit podcast or Mike’s previous unit Podcast called Kill Tank Radio then you’ve hear him mention CSM (R ) Scott Schroeder. Scott retired after 32 years of service in the Army and after completing his time as the FORSCOM CSM. Since that time he has mentored a generation of leaders in and out of uniform. He authored a book titled “Behind the Colors” which in Mike’s opinion is the best book written about NCO leadership. He has also hosted a podcast titled “Reflection on Behind the Colors”. Also works with Solution 21, providing his years of experience in a consulting role.
In this episode Mike and Scott talk about leadership, service in the military, facing adversity and why the ability to reflect is so important. Also how transitions take time and hell of a lot of patience. This is an episode that you want to have a notebook ready, as Scott provides tons of life lessons and leadership principles.
